Have the big teams signed players that make anyone genuinely concerned? United maybe, but they still have their flaws.

I would be very happy if the window was to close right now as Man City are the only team bar our selves in the top six that looks to have improved the squad considerably.
that could all change by September 1st of course and it remains to be seen if our apparent improvements will prove sufficient where it matters.

I think we've improved, but I think we could have done with a reinforcement or two at CB and in midfield, overall though I think the squad's significantly stronger, particularly if Sturridge does return, soz for the cliche, but it'd be like a new signing.

I guess there's time for one of the big teams to buy big, Arsenal I think will buy a big name striker.

Not concerned. Before the season I nominated the Chavs to win the league again as I thought they would be sounder than Citeh at the back, but events so far this season suggest I may have got that @rse about front and, if Otamendi is as good as Citeh think he is, that signing could set their seal on the title. However, that doesn't directly concern me as such, as I never thought we'd compete with the top two anyway. I thought the Arse had pulled off a real coup with Cech (and I'm not writing him off as a signing yet BTW) but even then I didn't reckon he by himself would be enough to transform them, and yet another injury to Wilshere - who's admittedly a cnut but IMO a very talented cnut - will hurt them. It was our own failings rather than the Mancs' quality which let them overtake us last season, and I reckon Tottenham got as high as they're capable of getting when they sneaked into 5th.

If we perform to our potential (and I'm cautiously optimistic about our start) we not only can, we *ought* to get top four.

If we had signed a DM, as well as keeping Lucas, I would have been extremely happy with our summer. It's still looking like a good summer at the moment mind.

Tottenham have had a poor window in my opinion and I can't see them doing better than 6th. They haven't signed anyone of note and they're putting all their eggs in that semi-retarded, gorpy Kane basket. Can't see him doing as well either.

Chelsea's defense has suffered the odd mishap over the years and they eventually get their shit together, but they do look exposed. Just goes to show how much form can play a part and it can just as easily go out the window after a break and due to regression etc. That's why seasons are so difficult to call and I never get involved in prediction threads, because anything can happen.

Hal: yeah, it'll be interesting to see if Kane catches Second Season Syndrome.

If even you're relatively optimistic BTW, that's gotta be a good sign. 😉

I'm relieved how little good business the big four have done. IMO we've strengthened more than any of them.

Utd seem to have been particularly shambolic with their various failed pursuits - reduced to playing Daley Blind as a CB!! And very weak in the striker position, too. Schneiderlin will toughen them up, though, tbf.

City have made a couple of decent enough signings but at very high prices - again not as bad as I'd feared.

Arsenal still seem determined to thwart that title challenge they should be capable of. The same 3 players they've needed for about 10 years still not signed.

On paper we should get top 4.

And we have the best manager

Got to the end of Jules post then realised he'd used the word cunt. Had to read it back to confirm & spotted the letters had been transposed!

Good post Jules.

Fwiw I think it is still a very open league this season. City look impressive but have enough potential issues to suggest their performances may vary over the course of a season. Chelsea have serious issues in a couple of areas, & Mourinho has seemingly briefed the press that he was expecting a poor start following a horrible pre season, but they'll have a good long run at some point.

Arsenal, are, well Arsenal. Nuff said. Utd look shit but have bought enough quality players that they should be around the top four if not in it, but a title challenge may be a stretch even with the league so open.

Chelsea will be fine . you don't go from league winners tovshit over night , theyve not lost anybody and have bought in some good players .

Unfortunately, its a matter of when the momentum begina to build for those fuckers .

If we beat Arsenal, I'm all aboard the Rodgers express as I think you're right on regarding Arsenal and Utd , I don't expect either to make this season as comfortable as it should be for them ..

I know someone who has proved that wrong, but then the same individual had already proved you dont have to win to be a winner, so I guess he is the exception that proves the rule.

Pedro.
Schneiderlin.

Yeah those two definitely, Pedro's the interesting one longterm, I thought he might struggle but there were few signs of that yesterday. I think United have come out of this window the best, but they've still not really addressed the centre back and goalkeeper issues adequately, an area where they look fairly average - that said, they've got brilliant options for a central midfield two/three who will protect the back four better than most.

I think United's defence looks improved because they play such a ponderously slow game these days. If Newcastle had had better quality, they'd have punished the Mancs on a couple of occasions the other day when they had at least a couple of counter attacks, especially the one where they had a 3-on-1 and managed to fuck it up. We'll see how good United are in defending if / when Van Gaal feels pressured to loosen the reins to help the attack, trading a part of their solidity / compactness for adventure and goals. Then we'll see if Smalling and Shaw have really improved, or it's all just an illusion.

Pedro is such a lovely footballer.
21m in todays market is such a good price.
We paid nearly that for Lallana and Markovic....

I have my doubts over Pedro and I hope to fuck I am proved right!

But, yeah, the prices we paid for Lallana and Markovic were a little crazy; especially when Daiquiri went for a song to Stoke. I continue to hold out hope for both but, like the long summer nights, those hopes are fading.

Yeah, had my doubts too and it will be pretty annoying if he proves them wrong at Chelsea of all places.
