Van Gaal looks at the moment like he's made a bit of an error in concentrating so little on sorting out the defence, especially if De Gea and Valdes are off. I realise that we finished second two years ago with a fairly average defence and a not great goalkeeper, so if your attack is phenomenal it can compensate, but considering the gobs of money they're throwing around it seems a little odd they didn't prioritise a decent centre back, for instance.

Agreed.

If there was one position we needed to strengthen from last year it was CB.

We were weak in CM and have that sorted now which will help the defense but defense is going to be our weakness this season.

Romero
Darmian Rojo Jones Shaw

Fucking lol.

Well GK obviously looks weak now. Don't think Romero will be 1st choice and if De Gea leaves we will most likely sign another keeper but no idea who.

Smalling will start ahead of Jones or Rojo IMO but add another CB and that back four looks ok for a top 4 challenge to me.

Shaw and Darmian are solid FBS IMO.

Are you satisfied that the £300m you've spent in the last 2 years has been spent wisely? That sort of ridiculous money should really warrant a title challenge, not just a top 4 challenge. Surely. Or are you happy with that?

In the last two windows including this we have spent £221m while your have spent £195m, according to http://www.transferleague.co.uk

Don't think £200m is enough to guarantee a title challenge these todays where all the top teams are spending big each year.

Spin it, spinner.

You've added £300m to a title winning side and gone hurtling backwards. But, if as a Utd fan, you're happy with that, then who am I to argue!

Personally, I'm pretty disappointed with some of our own spending.

You spent 30 million on a solid full back?
Solid?
You could have kept Phil Bardsley if solid is what your after.

And from that title winning squad we will have lost most of the key players. Evra, Vidic, Rio, Rafael, Scholes, Giggs, Nani, Kagawa, RvP and Welbeck.
We have also lost Ferguson which means we need to spend more than he ever did to stay competitive.

The only players from that team that will get more than 20 starts are Rooney, Smalling and Jones. One of the last two might even get less if we eventually sign a top CB.

Of course we have wasted money and transfer haven't worked out. That happens to every club with transfers just the nature of it.

Yeah, I agree with most of that.

Ferguson left you lot in some state.

Typical Devils' luck:

CL Playoffs - Non-champions route:
Ties to be played Aug. 18-19 and Aug. 25-26:

Lazio v Bayer Leverkusen
Man United v Club Brugge
Rapid Vienna v Shakhtar Donetsk
Valencia v Monaco
Sporting Lisbon v CSKA Moscow

The most comfortable draw of them all.

David De Gea is surprised at being left out of Manchester United's team for the first two games of the season.

Contrary to Louis van Gaal's comments, sources close to De Gea say he never expressed a desire not to play.

De Gea has been training with United's reserve team and will not be considered for selection by manager Van Gaal until the transfer window closes.

He's been their player of the year 2yrs running, it'll be pretty good if he fucks off. And with the other 2 keepers possibly off also, they're going to need at least 1 more.
Saying that, they need CB's more than they need a keeper at the moment. And another striker that isn't Pedro.
Be excellent if they finish the window with teenwolf, valdes lindegaard all out, and only pedro in.

Really good signing that. Surprised nobody else has come in for him down the years.

My blue mates seem to think maybe not. But I would have thought that would be the case.

It's mad how every club seems to have the ability to spend. Even teams like Middlesbrough and Hull and West Brom are splashing out. But Everton are always skint.

A quick look at that site suggests that the figures are not particularly trustworthy.
For example Firmino is listed as costing £29m, a figure including addons ( £21m + £8m add ons) while Sterling is listed as netting £35.2m which doesn't include the addons (£44m + £5m addons with 20% going to QPR).
It is also a tad disingenuous to compare Liverpool and Man U's spending currently because in all likelihood Liverpool's spending this summer is over while by the time the window closes Man U's will have significantly increased.
For the record I would be more than happy if your spending doesn't increase as I reckon you are little better currently than you were last season while I believe Liverpool have improved somewhat.
