Yeah, saw this earlier. He's been told by Real that he can go.
For the right fee that could be a great transfer.

Sadly I cant see Rodgers signing a dm, even though we need one.

I wouldn't directly disagree with that at all. The thing that gives me a smidgeon of hope over Illaramendi is that there's enough to his all-round game to make it possible that Rodgers could be persuaded. This may be wishful thinking, but what the heck. 😎

Actually Illarramendi isn't (according to all reports) and out and out DM. I don't want to compare him to Xabi but that is more his style, maybe we can call him a ball-spreading midfielder with a defensive edge (and a wide range of passing skills). I'd have thought Rodgers would love him.

Given the way the move worked out at the Theatre of Prawns, I reckon that's actually a decent bit of business for them. Unfortunately.

Depends what guidelines you use, I guess. It's a hit on the original fee, but I see it in the same way as I did the £17 mill.we got from W.Ham for Carroll.

Of course he's a far better footballer than Carroll, but that's not the point. The point is that both moves failed but both clubs recouped more than they might have expected given that failure.

The Di Maria transfer in and out was odd. United paid a fortune for him. He had starred in the CL final and WC. He is moved on one year later and everyone including their fans are just Meh. Very odd. He's a cracking player. Suprised the club didn't try make it work.

I think Utd wanted him to stay obviously but Di Maria wanted the move. His family had moved already I think.
30 mill loss in 1 year on a player including wages.
Galactico policy might not work every time..

I think it is obvious we wanted him to stay but his heart, head and everything else was in Paris. Very little point keeping him against his will.

The loss is big but only because he was/is a very expensive player.

Signed at 26.5 last year on a five year contract for £60m.
Realistically we were going to get 5 or 6 years from him with limited resale value.

So we would have expected him to cost us £10m to £12m per year plus wages.

He has cost us £16m plus wages.

From a FFP perspective I'd say we lost less than £5m on him.

Do agree that gallactico policy is a real hit and miss. Last year was a complete miss. But I doubt Woodward has given up on it just yet

You don't have a 'Gallactico policy'. You have a 'We hired David Moyes and now we're shitting ourselves we're no longer relevant' policy. The 'Gallactico policy was hiring the very best players in the world to the play for the biggest and most successful club in the world and included Zidane, Beckham, Christano Ronaldo, etc. Compare that to you lot when this 'policy' started; a club out of the Champions league signing a washed up cripple in Falcao just because he was a name and Di Maria, who granted, is a talent, but certaninly doesn't mean you have a gallactico policy.

Believing so is just clap-trap and fans convincing themselves your club is still in the big time. Trust me, it isn't.

Thank god for the lucrative shirt sponsorship deal huh?

TBH van Gaal's recent comments made it pretty clear he's offski. There have been whispers in the media of a new contract offer but I reckon they were planted by you lot to keep the price as high as poss.

Big, big loss for you. Is Romero up to the job and, if not, will you have enough funds to address this and the other positions you still need to strengthen, even with the humungous fee you'll doubtless charge for him?

Van Gaal looks at the moment like he's made a bit of an error in concentrating so little on sorting out the defence, especially if De Gea and Valdes are off. I realise that we finished second two years ago with a fairly average defence and a not great goalkeeper, so if your attack is phenomenal it can compensate, but considering the gobs of money they're throwing around it seems a little odd they didn't prioritise a decent centre back, for instance.
