Big game tactics?

You can see Neville throw up a bit every time has has to praise us.

He's more complimentary towards us than half this forum!

I don't think there was a single human being that I despised more than Gary fucking Neville for over a decade.

Never thought I'd soften on him and actually listen to anything he has to say, but it's happened.

He was more generous to us when we weren't credible title contenders. The generosity of his comments has declined in direct proportion to our rise to the top four.

I don't think Szoboslai can perform such full pelt running for too many games. Watched an analysis where it showed Szobo's defensive heat map, he was literally covering the entire 8 position end to end, on top of running into forward positions. By comparison Jones was just covering 20%, maybe less, of what Szobo was doing.

Let's see what is the state of Szobo against Newcastle.

It looks like Slot has found a slightly new angle, a different way to use this group of players - flood the midfield with 4 and “clone” Szoboszlai and the key tactical role he performs with another hard-working midfielder alongside him (note that after Jones went off, it was Alexis next to Szobo while Endo tucked in next to Gravenberch - so it’s possible to replicate this system with different personnel, this idea is more than simply a way to keep all 4 first-choice midfielders on the pitch). This way, our inconsistent #9’s stop being a problem - Jota and Nunez didn’t see even a minute of action and we didn’t really need them at any point.

It’s interesting to think back to Slot’s very first game in charge of Liverpool - pre-season against Real Betis in Pittsburgh, which I saw live - Slot used this exact formation with two #10’s (in that game it was Szobo and Elliott). So maybe it was in the back of his mind all along. Fast forward to now and I think it might become our go-to tactic for big games, certainly in the Champions League.

The Villa game with Jones on the left was another variation of that idea and arguably worked even better in terms of chance creation - so it looks like there is a lot of untapped potential in that system and it really showcases the all-around qualities of our midfielders, making our biggest strength even more of a strength. Defensively, having MacAllister (and later Endo) next to Gravenberch at all times allowed Gravvy to focus more on helping Trent (who needed all the help he could get against Doku!), while Macca often filled in the space between Van Dijk and Robertson, which has been our place of vulnerability in the past, and also effectively shadowed De Bruyne, making him a non-factor. And having a partner next to him allowed Szobo to focus more on the attacking part of his game, which he did to great effect. So, who needs #9’s? 🙂
Great points - I have often wondered the same regarding the deployment of all 4 of our main midfielders - and I couldn't believe it when I saw the line up in the City game yesterday (I missed the Villa game coz I was on holiday last week so never really looked at anything except it was 2-2 and Darwin/Jota both missed big chances). However, the one thing that concerned me with that line-up was playing all our main 4 at the same time and the risk of injury and then being unable to replace them to maintain that formation unless of course the need for Endo arrives.

I did not like the fact that we had such little possession of the ball in yesterday's game - I would have thought with those 4 midfielders on the pitch we would have dominated the ball and held onto it a bit better (actually a lot better). Also I rate our midfield 4 to be one of the best in world football ( if not the best), I was expecting more control than what I saw yesterday. Perhaps that was the plan that once we go ahead just protect the defence and only allow them to use the wings - coz lets face it - neither Doku/Sav are as good as Sterling and Mahrez were for City in terms of goal-scoring.

I don't think he starts against Newcastle, its going to be Jones/Grav/Macca and Szobo might get 30-40 mins in 2nd half. He looked fucked in that interview.
