Lambert

Rickie Lambert is a damn decent squad signing and at a snip. He can score all types of goals, is great at reading the game, running into space, scores penalties and free kicks. He is a goal threat.

He is very decent back up and a very different option off the bench. Welcome back Rickie!

@peterhague has a point though – the advantage of signing Lambert is that he's going to give you "something different," but this could also be a disadvantage, if you you don't have, say, Sturridge available for a game and you want "more of the same," rather than "something different." I think in a perfect squad Lambert would be an ideal 4th striker, with a 3rd striker someone younger who could actually challenge Sturridge.

Well, we could push Sterling up for the "more of the same" option, when desired. He is, among the rest, the closest player to Sturridge, although his finishing needs polishing (even then, his scoring rate isn't that bad, averaging a goal every 5 shots with 9 goals in 45 shots - just very fractionally off that of Sturridge at 21/99). Filling in for Sterling could be the other options like Coutinho, Ibe, Konoplyanka 5.0, Allen, etc. depending on where the vacancy is, and the type of skills required.

I keep suggesting that we use Sterling as a 3rd or 4th striker because we know what to expect from him in terms of the ability and attitude, and also he doesn't need the time to get to know team mates, adapt to the country / city, or learn how to play the way we do. As we seem to be bringing in another attack-minded midfielder or two, pushing Sterling up a rank when required becomes less problematic than last season, due to the (expected) wider range of quality options. So instead of 2 strikers and 2 attack-minded mids, we could go with 1 + 2 instead and redeploy the money saved.

I also don't think we need competition for Suarez and Sturridge - they don't come across as guys who will become complacent and slacken from the lack of challenge from team mates. I think the best players don't need to compete against another player in their team - they get their kick and motivation from competing against their opponents.

Yeah, I feel Sturridge in particular gets some motivation from playing with Suarez and kind of competing or judging himself against him – sometimes it results in greediness, but most of the time I think it's good motivation. And Suarez doesn't need external motivation, he just needs to be happy and loved. His motivation is somewhere in the soil or in the blood.

I think I agree with your point about Sterling. An added bonus is a Raheem also has a good understanding with Suarez and Luis clearly likes playing with him. Not sure about Sterling-Sturridge partnership though.

LOL at
Konoplyanka 5.0

This signing is a no-brainer, it's obviously to sweeten the Lallana deal and push it though at a lower price to shaft Bournemouth (who get 25% of the Lallana fee). Lambert is a very good player who will get plenty of opportunities next season and won't let us down.

I first saw him about 10 years ago when he was with Stockport County, he was a CM'er in those days! I was doing a pre-game bet and was looking for a first goalscorer bet and a local told me that Lambert took all the free kicks and penalties;first half free kick 25 yards out............BANG! I have a 25/1 winner..............I've liked him ever since 🙂

In terms of getting around Lallana's sell on fee, some were saying on a Southampton forum that Lambert has also got a sell on fee (going to Bristol).

Oh and in that video Ryan posted, his penalty against West Brom has ridiculous. He'll also be challenging Suarez for free kicks.

I'm really starting to lose some respect for Southampton over sell on fees.

There's no getting away from the fact that it's going to be a very short term deal, but that's no reason not to do it. He's actually got the technique, intelligence and discipline to revert Ray Kennedy-style to a midfield role if needed, but as a forward he's just the kind of player we've lacked in the squad. Imagine bringing him on in a key game instead of Aspas. I still think we need one more attacking player, but this is a shrewd signing.

An update on Liverpool's bid to sign Southampton striker Rickie Lambert. The England international is expected to undergo a medical on Saturday after Liverpool agreed a fee with Southampton. It is understood that Liverpool have offered between £8million and £10m for Lambert.

Because they sold 25% of the future fee when they bought the player, if they wanted 100% of a future sale, they shouldn't have made that offer. I know they're the selling club and they can demand what they want, but it annoys me that it's mentioned as if it's our problem. I think i'm on my own here though.

Echo and BBC keep insisting it's £4million, weird that there's too completely different valuations out there.

Why do people keep saying we need another striker?
Isnt Sturridge, Suarez, Borini and Lambert a cracking 4?

Considering we often play with just 1? If Borini goes then we would need another For sure, but if he stays we have some good options there. Im also fairly sure Raheem can play up top if needs be like Walcott for Arsenal.

I still don't rate Borini but yeah if we're sticking with him and sign Lambert then we don't need another striker. I'd guess at us buying a versatile attacker to complement the likes of Coutinho and that'd be us done on that front.

I love this quote from Southampton's fan forum :

If he goes, he will go with grateful thanks from me and with all good wishes.

I'd guess Sky are just including all of the rumoured add-ons and totalling it up. That's what they did with Hendo. I don't know if it's mischief or just part of their desire to hype up everything in the game, but it always confuses things.

I think you can summarize the reactions from Saints forum as follows:
  • Most: 9M is a great deal
  • Most: 4M is a terrible deal
  • Most: The owners are asset stripping
  • Some: How does Lambert even fit in at Liverpool?
  • Most: Wish him well, he deserves the move
  • Some: Lambert is right on the cusp of not being able to play week in, week out any more anyways (there were debates earlier in the year about him being past it and fitness going apparently)

Still not good enough IMO. We need that marquee signing. Another Suarez type player. Why not Muriel, Dzagoev, Sanchez etc?
Our first team wasn't our weakness last season, our squad was, regardless, Lallana will improve our first team, as will Lovren if we get him.

Hmm. I guess it hinges somewhat on whether Lallana is as good as some reckon he is and both he and Lambert can replicate their form at Liverpool.

In an ideal world, at least for me, we'd replace Borini with another versatile pacy attacker like Sterling. If he gets injured / loses form we don't really have anyone that can come in and offer us a pacy option. Brodgers turned to Moses enough times at the end of games to show that that type of player is good to have on the bench.
