Downing

I never wanted Downing here, and the price we paid was ridicoulous. But this season he has showed himself as a good alternative on the wing. Hope he finish of the season on a positive way. That will either make him attractive in the market or build him up to next season.

I find it odd the MT and Modo have an adgenda with Downing, when other players like Shelvey, Allen, Skrtel and Agger have been fucking shit up constantly for the past few months. On those guys recent form, they're not fit to lace Downing's boots.

What part of it is shite? You mean that I'm making stuff up?
Enrique doesn't have a better goal and assist ratio than him?
Enrique isn't a fullback and Enrique didn't cost at least half as much as Downing?

I'm entitled to mention these facts. If you respond by calling me a cunt, well then I guess you're the one who's in the wrong.
Enrique has 2 goals and 2 assists
Downing has 5 goals and 8 assists.

He means both seasons, but only in the league

Because they're the only games that matter

I don't think anyone on the site other than moron "rates" him. Since he signed, the general consensus on here was that we overpaid and that he would ultimately not be good enough for us - along with a lot of vitriol whenever he has been poor, which has been the majority of the time. Almost all of us would sell him for any decent fee.

For the last few weeks though, this under performer has found enough form and confidence to give us good balance and attacking impetus. He's been involved in a lot of our good play.

As a fan, surely you have to be pleased with that and hope it continues, even if you expect that it won't.

He's playing well. Support him. When he goes to shit again, you can have a pop.

Or you could even just go quiet about him when he's playing well. That's the difference between just having an agenda, and having one and being a WUM about it.

Note how Mark hasn't mentioned Johnson in a while? That's how the pro's do it.

I think Modo secretly loves Downing. He doth protest too much methinks.

Thats a very fair post.

I wasn't so much having a pop at him rather early in the thread found it amusing that so many were so keen to big him up, "agendas" aside the general consensus was certainly not that he wouldnt be good enough for us and I was aghast that a player who inhonesty really doesnt deserve much admiration from the fans of LFC should be lauded just for playing alright recently.

I wholeheartedly agree it's good he is playing better and I am genuinely pleased about that, as i would be for any player for us, I was having a pop because not everyone was being as balanced as you are being in your post and also if i'm honest don't like being told to share an opinion to which I don't fully ascribe or face being derided in some way for not therefore supporting the team.

I shall resume my lengthy silence on the topic of Stewart Downing which i was holding pretty well before this thread.

Good luck to him. May his next two years be a mirror opposite of his first two.

He's just a fall-guy. He's a generally inoffensive player who could play in almost any team in the league and do OK, without pulling up trees. If we were winning he wouldn't get half the stick, but as it stands he's the easy man to blame because we overpaid and he was signed by a previous manager.

To be fair, in our recent dismal defeats, I thought Downing was probably one of our best players in both matches.

No one overly wanted Downing. His name didn't appear on any hypothetical wish list threads. I think a few tried to support him as an extension of supporting the club. I didn't want him to sign and the fee compounded that decision.
However, when he did sign, we had no option but support him. I put him in the fantasy football team in hope he'd rack up assist. I was really happy with his debut against Sunderland when he cracked the cross bar. I thought he was going to step up to the plate for us. However, his confidence took a battering pretty quickly and he became a passenger for us. His go to move of knocking it to Enrique and running into his man became painful to watch. His perfomance against United was the final straw for me. He hid on the pitch and there is no excuse for that. Cowardly play.

I'm happy he is starting to show some confidence. It's long over due. He's playing well and he has my support again.

Bang on as per.

And that's the crux of it really, people gave him support. What I can't be arsed with is bellends going "I said he was shit and I hated him from the off, now look at all you idiots now". Go back and read the fucking posts, you cretinous "told you so" twats.

Hansern for example took a hammering for supporting him. Bit harsh. I don't think Hansern was back in Norway with Downing posters all over his wall dreaming of signing him. He was naive due to the level of support he gave Downing. Probably more wishful thinking, hope and loyality to supporting the club than rating Downing.

I'm not a fan of the 'I told ya so' brigade either to be honest Mark. It harps back to the days when Brendan seemed to find pleasure in Crouch not scoring. It a weird camp to position yourself in. If you go to such lenghts to hate a player then it will subconsciously sneak into your thinking. If any poster actually hopes a player performs poorly to suit their stance or agenda then they should seriously take a hard look at themselves. Another example is the Pepe haters. Pepe makes a mistake and people log in to bash him. He makes a mistake and it's a Win - Lose situation for them. It's lose - lose in my eyes as his mistake costs our club. I can't find any solace in the fact it would suit my agenda.

Since im on a rant here I'll throw in one more quick one as a side note. I've worked with people who have actually found comfort in their team losing because they had the oppisition goalscorer as their captain in Fantasy Football. Sweet jesus. Everton fan in work was being slagged after being humped by united. His reply, "Yeah but had Ronaldo as my captain".

That's not quite true. Mark wanted him.

Can't remember. Perhaps we should differentiate between actively wanting a player or getting behind a player. I don't think Downing was knocking about on anyone's wish lists.

I said no one overly wanted him. There was support from a few which always stems from wishful thinking or simply hoping the player will suceed.

78%, when asked wanted him signed. It was in the "MT/Modo love in thread", a thread which I started because I couldn't believe the first thread which people don't seem to refer too as much for some reason.

It doesn't matter now does it, he is our player, i'm sure out of that 78% there was a large number of qualified YES votes....

It is immaterial and we now have him. I want him to play well now we have him and am pleased he is better than he was for 90% of his stay so far, and it's true he aint the only player who has been dissapointing for large portions of that time.

I really don't need to get het up about it as it makes the square root of fuck all difference what we all think in the end.

Some of the posts IMO are a distortion of what was said and the way it was done but obviously many people felt strongly about it then and still do and I am one of them, lines of communication did suffer in the row and reasonable became unreasonable and disrespectful in both directions.

This doesn't mean I want the man to fail in the slightest.

But fuck it.... who cares its only footy and its only an opinion. In honesty whether the 78% were right or wrong doesn't really matter, saying "i told you so" might well be tempting considering the reams and reams of two way argument that went on before, some of it nasty, but nonetheless it is correct to say that gloating misses the point and that the player does need support, and that comes from a "Downing hater".

I never hated the man in any real sense, I don't know him, I just wished we had bought somebody better. I hope this post clarifies my position and doesn't offend because I cant be arsed getting attacked tbh.

Rest assured if he scores one tonight I will go as fucking crazy as the next man. Here's hoping.

Keni has ALWAYS been unreasonable!

Well, he's developing the skill further.

Molby, I can just about deal with your agenda for Downing but, if there's one thing I could ask, it would be for some bloody "."s in your posts.

Someone's going to hyper-ventilate reading one of those posts soon.

Played well again today; very direct and always looking to put the ball into the box. That Downing of last season who would turn and pass the ball backwards every time he got to the final third has been missing since December. Great effort by the guy today.
