Downing

We would probably only get 7m for him now, he is almost 30 and on big wages.

He seems to be doing a good job of late so I think he deserves to stay in the squad next season rotating with Stirling. Hopefully Stirling wil push on and make the spot his own. For now he can understudy, a good replacement as substitute for Downing when needed to inject some life into a game. I imagine that's how BR saw this season going but didn't account for Downing starting so shite and Stirling starting so well.

I don't see Downing as a regular in a title winning side but since thats true of about 70% percent of the current squad, I don't suppose that really matters...he has proven he can do a job so for now we have bigger problems to tackle.

I don't get the not in a title side attitude. Would you have said that about Gareth Barry if we has signed him.

It's a team not 11 Ronaldos.

Wasn't there a similar case with him at Aston Villa? First season shit/average, then went on to get their player of the year in his second season?

No, you're not alone in thinking that. Many would agree (me included).

I'm just saying, that while he's come into a good run of form, people are now expecting that he should live up to his 20m price tag. Personally, I think that's a tad unfair, as he's not worth 20m. LFC wasted the money on him. It's not Downings fault.

Yes, the price tag was inflated, so the constant references to it, and his inabiility to justify it, are just tiresome. Compare him to how he played for Villa. That's more relevant.

I don't know.Comparing a player's performances then and now. It's all so mysterious, innit? Okay, let's go back to what we know: 'Cor, blimey, he cost a lot, didn't he, eh? Eh? Eh?'

Thanks for the laugh. We need someone with some research skills to find his goals and assists in the first two seasons... anyone..

For all competitions from wiki:
09-10; played 35; 3 goals, 3 assists
10-11; played 44; 8 goals; 9 assists
11-12; played 46; 2 goals; 2 assists
12-13; played 35; 4 goals; 6 assists

If he gets another 4 or 5 goals we may get a decent price for him.

So how does he compare to his time @ Villa. Assists? Goals? Balls into Bins?

Across all competitions:

First season:
LFC: 36 starts, 10 subs, 2 goals, 2 assists
Villa: 33 starts, 2 subs, 3 goals, 6 assists

Second season:
LFC: 30 starts, 5 subs, 4 goals, 4 assists (ongoing)
Villa: 39 starts, 4 subs, 8 goals, 7 assists

We've spent enough "squad player" type money on players who've been an utter waste of time, energy and finances, cf Pennant, Gonzalez, Leto etc. He should have come here for the price of a Riera or a Yossi and no one could really have complained, but the fact is, he's being hung out to dry by people who can't let go of the £20m price tag. Move on, it's money spent and money gone, we may aswell get the most from it. He's linking up well with Johnson, Gerrard and Suarez, he's chipping in, creating chances and has now scored a couple. It might be the ideal time to sell at the end of the season, but I wish people would let go with this pissy gripe they've held onto, constantly making their bitterness over the fee all too obvious. He's doing well, he'll either stay and give us good depth and be a more than reasonable option, or he'll go and we'll reinvest. Either way, he's turned it round, is nowhere NEAR as bad as some idiots continue to still make out and deserves some slack, not continual "yeah but, he's not worth £20m". We knew that when we bought him, deal with it, it's fucking done.

Stop being so narky mark.

It's fair to say my own objection to Downing did not and does not revolve around the fee, it revolves around the fact that he isnt very good, or at least nowhere NEAR as good as what some are saying in this thread.

How do YOU think his current form compares to his form at Villa?

EDIT: Don't bother. I just realised there was another page.

I would be interested to see how at the end of this season Stu compares against other wingers in the PL

Valencia,
Nani
Milner
Nzogbia
Young
Gutierrez
Lennon
Adam Johnson
Nasri
Silva
Mirallas
Osman
Mata (is he a winger these days?)
Walcott (played up front a lot as well)
Not BALE 😳

Proabably missed loads there, lets see how Stu compares at end of season

I couldn't be bothered comparing him to other teams wingers, I want to compare him to our other attacking players: Suarez, Sturridge, Coutinho, Gerrard, Borini, Sterling and Suso.

The only ones he's currently better are are the last two, who have age on their side and Borini, who I'd also look to move on. We can do better, and we should aim to if we can afford it.

Mark's not being "narky" anyway. Whether or not there's any justification in the criticism Downing's been getting, what's got mark's (and my, and lots of other people's) back up is the sheer mind-numbing repetitiousness of that criticism. We heard it the first time FFS.

Is anyone actually mentioning his price? I'm not sure if I have seen anyone do it, besides those who want to defend him.

Just to throw a little aside in this thread. Downing never cost us £20m. It was £16m plus add ons up to £18.5m

I would be hesitant to let him go just when he is finding some form. I mean even the better sides need a few £7-8m players(which Stu is) in their squads. It's irrelevant how much we paid for him.

Of course if someone came in with a good offer or if we signed one or two new attacking players it would be a different matter but I don't think we should be actively looking to get rid at this point.

Well, to be fair, 20 million is more annoying than 16.5 million plus add-ons. Much more annoying, actually.

Course they do, Modo does it all the time, people have said about him in recent posts that we should be getting more for £20m, course we should, we knew that fucking 18 months ago, like I said. And who's particularly defending him? You're quick to pounce in with the "well no one's actually mentioned the price tag". No one's actually tried to jump infront of a bullet for him either.

Nealmac and Fox are anyway.

What do you mean I'm quick to pounce? Should I hold off a few minutes before I reply? Stop looking for an argument when there is none to be had.

He's a decent player, who we're paying a lot of money too, we can do better for cheaper.

I dont mind Downing. Starting to really believe in himself.
Marks Riera comparison is a good one.

Modo? Well, he has an excuse doesn't he?
