Downing

Yesterday, he worked hard. He looked to beat his man and used his head, and took his goal very well. And he tracked back well and was often winning the ball and starting some counter attacks.

A good performance from Downing and he is worth his starting place. At last there is *some* competition for places.

Downing was excellent in tracking back and helping in defense yesterday as well, he even had a few nice tackles. Well done Stu, hopefully we can get a few more top quality performances before the move to Barca.

I second all that, played well, was outshone by Coutinho's flair on the other wing but then so was near on the whole team and i remember thinking that both he Sturridge and Lucas needed to wake up but he did just that, stuck too it and got the break and always kept trying and running.

If i'm honest I thought he was going to shit it for the goal but he held his nerve and pulled us back into the game.... Well played.

I doubt it was the rocket up his arse from Rodgers mind you he must have known in his heart of hearts he had not done enough in his Liverpool career up to now, maybe it just needed him to wake up and smell the coffee. Fuck it maybe it was just he needed a bit of luck like yesterday with a gift wrapped goal in an important game.... I wonder what may have happened to him last season if he had not have hit the bar with that volley against Bolton(?).... Whatever it was that brought about the change you can't argue about his place in the side at the moment he has deserved it.

I was actually excited at one point when Downing picked up the ball towards the half way line. He's a new man. I'm happy for him.

At some level he must have known for a while that he'd been disappointing, but it hadn't made any difference. *Something* got him to wake up to himself. If it wasn't Brendan's boot up his jacksie which produced the change, what else was it?

God knows Jules, as you all know I think he is fairly limited but nonetheless he wasnt as bad as he was showing previous to this good spell. Maybe it was just confidence for him, you never know maybe he knew that the game was up for his former shitty not arsed self and started to relax a bit.... I'm not trying to take it away from Rodgers, who I think is doing a good job in general, I just think it's difficult to say what has caused the change with any certainty.

No worries mind you i'm sure if he continues in this vein somebody will ask him.

I think the answers easier than that.
If talented players don't perform the manager gets the blame.

Therefore the reverse should also be true.

Am I nuts or does it seem Super Stu has found an extra gear he didn't have before as well? He seems to have a bit more pace these days for whatever reason.

loved his performance yesterday, cool over the goal and took it on his right foot as he knew early was better, bet sturridge would not have.

Loved his aggression in the tackle and the way he piled in on Dembele at the end and told Suarez to get off the pitch showed a real maturity.

This is the Downing I wanted we we signed him, I was pleased when we got him and this season has been superb for him

Well done brendan and Stu

He scored and played well but (and I realise it sounds strange considering he scored) but I'd rather see him pass it to a better placed player (Sturridge) in that or similar situation. I'm not sure he placed it to be honest...

I don't think he did either. He was a bit jammy that he megged Lloris for sure. Not that I'm complaining.

Studge had wondered offside at one point. If Downing had passed to him, I would have punched Studge in the face and then Downing.

I think he saw their defender on the line and assumed he was onside, but he needs 2 players to between him and the net to stay onside and the keeper was in no mans land.

So say we get a 8-10M offer for him this summer. Sell or Keep?

I think you would probably have to sell him for that price because I doubt his value will ever be higher than that. Less than 8 million though and I would probably keep him based on current form.

I gather he had several ferocious bollockings behind closed doors last season, so maybe he needs to be named and shamed in public, which, if so, is so pathetic it makes his improvement harder to admire. Good that it's finally happened, but if everyone needed that to get them going the bloody world would go to pot.

Bloody hell, you learn something new everyday. Never knew that! So you're offside if only one opposing player is ahead of you. I always imagined the goalie wasn't a part of the equation.

Maybe he's just started touching The Sign ?

I bet he would constantly get the song 'The Sign' by Ace of Base stuck in his head entering the pitch. Then he would continue to rack his brain over their back catalogue as the games commenced. Concentrations levels at an all time low by HT as he departes the field humming 'All that she wants is another baby' over and over again. No wonder Stu could never perform for us. Another fine mess the scando's have gotten us into.

I knew Downing was coming on leaps and bounds, for most of hi time with us I have referred to him as fucking Downing, most of the time, I was then concious I had dropped the fucking prefix , and he had become downing.
Then at the game yesterday I found myself referring to him by his first name, well done Stewart 😉

Always pleased to change my mind on a player.

I am a little worried now - because I think Barca will definitely come in for this guy during the summer. I don't really want us to lose one of our best players who has created loads of chances for Liverpool since joining only for incompetent strikers to fluff it up in front of goal. Hope he decides to stay with us - I know we are just an average team these days with no CL, Europa, FA Cup, League Cup, or PL potential winning side - but maybe our ancient history will keep Stewart at the club next season. I would feel much better if he started saying the things that Suarez has been saying.

By the way - thank you to those people that sent the happy 5th Anniversary message - even if it was the automated part of the system software that runs this site.

Really? NSIS?

I argued this point with a ref once when I was last man and our keeper went up for a corner I simply let the 2 guys attacking pass the ball forward and called offside.
The Ref looked at me for second and then I laughed and said who else was playing them on, pointing at our goalie still jogging back.

How do people not know that rule?
