I argued this point with a ref once when I was last man and our keeper went up for a corner I simply let the 2 guys attacking pass the ball forward and called offside.
The Ref looked at me for second and then I laughed and said who else was playing them on, pointing at our goalie still jogging back.

How do people not know that rule?

He looked sheepish, then blew his whistle for offside much to the anger of the other team. It was very amusing at the time.

Maybe its from being a player. I've often stepped off the line to catch a striker when my keeper goes for a cross from a corner or free kick and is caught in no mans land as someone tries to either head or flick the ball goalwards. The striker on the line pokesthe ball in and then I simply tell the ref he's offside as I'm last man along with the other defender on the opposite post. Works everytime once the ref thinks about it for a second. And I must admit I take satisfaction in explaining the rule to any arrogant pr*ck from the opposition who states the other defender is on the post and playing him on (as they don't know the rule applies to 2 defenders (including the keeper in most cases).

The look on their face is always priceless as they get so animated telling you that you don't know the f*cking offiside rule only to told 15 seconds later that in fact they don't know it 🙂

Studge had wondered offside at one point. If Downing had passed to him, I would have punched Studge in the face and then Downing.

I think he saw their defender on the line and assumed he was onside, but he needs 2 players to between him and the net to stay onside and the keeper was in no mans land.

Sturridge were only in front of Downing the same second as Downing took the shot but you have a point.

Also, offside rule or not, you'd have to wonder why his teammates "often" allow an opposing striker to poke the ball in on the line instead of busting a gut to clear it. "Let's not get it to safety, Pat's gonna embarrass them and the ref with his firm grasp of the offside rule." Must be a team of academics.
