He has been better lately. Not quite as good to tonight but still so much better than last season

yep he did tackle back well, he tail is well up

still wish he shot more, he should have told Luis to move out of the way on the free kick which no right footer could have score from

still need more balls Stu - come on lad

Ha.

I'm sure Luis would have politely moved out the way.

Hes now at the stage where I'm calling him super stu WITHOUT doing a mongy voice

Indeed. I really couldn't see how Suarez was going to hit it, unless he went around the other side of the wall.

Although to be fair, it was a really good effort that would fool most keepers. No one could see that coming.

Another good game today. He deserves every start he's getting since December.

I was adamant I didn't want to see him in a red shirt again in November - his displays for the past 3 months have changed my mind. If he keeps up this level of performance, I wouldn't be opposed to us keeping him in the squad for next season. I won't have problems with us selling him too as I think we can get better players to start there, but right now I'm not so dead set on us selling him anymore. I'm ambivalent, that is.

He's nowhere near the 20m we paid for him, but that's a problem caused by our own faulty valuation. Somehow, Rodgers has managed to find the key to unlock the chest in which Downing's ability has been hiding.

He is playing much better, I still want a bit more from him tbh, nice header yesterday was certainly good to see, keeper had no chance.

Strangely I thought he was better last week than yesdy.... he went fairly anonymous for a good while.... but then a lot of the play was down the left via Coutinho ( what a find he is by the looks) but yeah.... you cant argue with his recent outings.

He will earn a grovelling apology from me to the God of Football justice when he digs us out of a bad situation when the team is playing badly, like a 20M pound winger should..... unfair maybe but I want him to earn it....

At current rate of improvement he may well do it.

He's not a £20m winger though. You can't hate on him because he hasn't been living up to his price tag. Personally I think he's playing really well for what I think he SHOULD be valued at. And I'm really happy with his form since the Christmas, or thereabouts.

We are all aware that he is not a 20M pound winger the trouble is that is roughly what we paid and definitely what we need.

This will only descend into a an argument about semantics, I am pleased he is playing well honestly I am NM, it is tedious to go over it again I think we can all agree on that. I personally don't see that he brings that much to the side and have yet to change my mind on that point. This does not mean he can't play a role or indeed show why we spent so much on him and he will have my support for whatever that means.

My opinion is that If we could get a decent fee for him I would be inclined to sell, maybe i'm alone in thinking that.

No, you're not alone in thinking that. Many would agree (me included).

I'm just saying, that while he's come into a good run of form, people are now expecting that he should live up to his 20m price tag. Personally, I think that's a tad unfair, as he's not worth 20m. LFC wasted the money on him. It's not Downings fault.

If he continues in current form to the end of the season, I wouldn't sell. Why risk trying to reinvest the 7 million we'd get for him, when he's actually one of our most consistent performers? Since BR told him we were looking to get rid he not only stepped it up, he looks like he now believes he deserves to be a Liverpool player, something he self evidently didn't think was true before.

Unless we get an offer worth well more than his real value, then I'd hang on to him. I can see the arguments against, but similarly, I didn't want us to sell Riera, who I thought gave us a great shape and balance, even though he wasn't ripping opponents to shreds. So it goes with Stu. At least for now....

I agree with you about Riera, but I don't think you can say Downing gives us "great shape and balance." It's more a case of Rodgers adjusting his team and tactics to suit the players he has at his disposal; he didn't have much choice considering that the likes of Sterling and Suso completely ran out of steam in the 2nd half of the season and Borini is permanently injured. But next season Rodgers will want to build around his vision again and I don't think that vision includes Downing, even the new and improved version. I think it's likely that Downing will not leave in the Summer, but I would be very surprised if he remained a starter. He certainly could be a useful squad player, if only his confidence could handle such status. We'll see.

I think he's raised his game enough that we could command a decent fee in the summer which we all would love. Bite the hand off whomever offers it. He's a good squad player, but not for 20M or for the 10M we could get in by selling. Squad players usually cost 50p.

He could well turn to muck again soon. Sell!

We've spent enough "squad player" type money on players who've been an utter waste of time, energy and finances, cf Pennant, Gonzalez, Leto etc. He should have come here for the price of a Riera or a Yossi and no one could really have complained, but the fact is, he's being hung out to dry by people who can't let go of the £20m price tag. Move on, it's money spent and money gone, we may aswell get the most from it. He's linking up well with Johnson, Gerrard and Suarez, he's chipping in, creating chances and has now scored a couple. It might be the ideal time to sell at the end of the season, but I wish people would let go with this pissy gripe they've held onto, constantly making their bitterness over the fee all too obvious. He's doing well, he'll either stay and give us good depth and be a more than reasonable option, or he'll go and we'll reinvest. Either way, he's turned it round, is nowhere NEAR as bad as some idiots continue to still make out and deserves some slack, not continual "yeah but, he's not worth £20m". We knew that when we bought him, deal with it, it's fucking done.

It's tough one getting your head around 20M, mate. I spent $30 too much last weekend, and I was ticked off for a few hours.
