Well, yes, but... Gerrard was agony to watch in such interviews, he's be staring at the ground, fidgeting with his neck and mumbling after a brilliant performance. He's still hard work now. On the other hand there have been loads of players down the years who've been flash and brash off the field and bottled it on the field, so we can read too much into such interviews. Downing is from Middlesborough, where most of them regard basic sociability as a sign of weakness.

That ball he whipped in for Sturridge with his right foot yesterday was great. Nice bit of skill, had a look up, waited a second, then whipped an inch perfect ball for Sturridge to fluff. When those start going in, and they will, it will only help Downing's confidence.
