Downing

I would love to see a stat of how many crosses Downing has put across the face of the goal that no striker gambled on, or how many times he has crossed the ball and put one on a plate that Caroll, Kuyt or Suarez fluffed.

Pure assists stat means fuck all.

This last few months he has simply been good, may it continue

You mean hit and hope crosses where he isn't actually aiming at anyone, just aimlessly banging the ball in the box?
Fuck me, I can probably do that from the halfway line for 50k a week if they want.

And they count that as a chance created too.

Stats in football have along way to come before they mean anything

He's an ok Premier league footballer who we paid too much for. I wanted us to get Adam Johnson instead. Shows what I know.

No. I mean, (as Fox said) the amount of times he put another player clean through, only for them to fuck up.

and another cracking game for Stu, keep it up and maybe some folk on here will give him credit

He set up alot of chances that we fluffed, again.

Yeah, he did. We didn't score though, and I don't remember him having any chances. He's an attacking player, so he needs to be involved in goals.

He had a good/decent game, just not a cracking one.

This.

But of course, for the agenda loving guys, this will just go down as another match where Downing had no assists.

Credit should go were it deserves to be. And Downing have had quite a few very good performances since before xmas. he has invited the others to give him the ball, changed between going to the line and cutting inside, interchanged well, and been a treath like a winger should be. He also seem to offer more physical strenght to the wing than i.e. Sterling, and in my eyes that is underrated. During the full ninety minutes, a full back will feel the physical presence of Downing, and probably be bothered more than a more leightweighted winger. he has also tracked back, and seem to have a good engine.

This doesnt mean we can put down that appearance as one with 2 close-to-assist or however we are going to count it. And it is not proof that he has constantly been torturing fullbacks over his liverpool career but been let down by poor strikers.

Agendas can be used for everything really. People are saying Rodgers need more time, as does his signings, as all he did was inheriting a piss poor squad of expensive flops from Kenny the Shithouse. At the same time the players that perform is the ones that now has got the time they feel Rodgers signings deserve. What goes around comes around. But as you say, if you have an agenda it is never difficult to find proof to support it, and if you then just ignore what doesnt support it you are fine.

I don't think he was "brilliant", but he was and is at the moment one of our better players. Certainly not playing so poorly that people should be kicking him for the sake of it while constantly overlooking players who are underperforming most weeks.

The reason he might still be getting "kicked", is because he's been here nearly two years and still hasn't proven that he's good enough for us. The likes of Sterling, Suso, Shelvey have age on their side, Suarez and Gerrard have proved it, Downing is at an age where he has no excuses, and being the best of a poorly performing group isn't enough. He needs to justify his 20m price tag (and what ever his wages are), and justify his reputation. He's a long way from doing that. He's getting better, granted, he's now about a 5m player, he needs to add goals, and a lot of them.

If he had only just joined and performed like this, then I could see reason to defend him, but you can't discount the last year and a half with a few decent performances. He does deserve until the end of the season, but if he doesn't improve even more then we should cut our losses.

I'm talking about judging present performances on past woes, which is like the reverse of what you're eluding to with Suarez and Gerrard, it's not really fair being selective one way.

You make allowances for players that have proved themselves having poor runs. Downing's improvement has been in contrast to the majority of his time here. You judge on the majority. It's not being selective.

Downing has to make sure this period lasts longer, then people will come around to him.

He doesn't need to justify his price tag at all. He's as good as he is. End of. It's not his fault we paid stupid money for him.

IMO more recent performances should carry greater weight than earlier ones in such a judgment, but overall I'd agree with your last sentence/para.

Well, yeah, they should carry a greater weight. Downing shouldn't be dropped while this form continues, but if it doesn't last, he should be sold.

Playing game to game is based on form, whether we sell or keep is based on the overall.

Anyone see MOTD2 last night

That sums Stu up for me.

There he was being interviewed after another great performance by the team and Him and throughout his interview he looked at the floor, no eye contact and mumbled

His shyness makes him a bottler sometimes on the pitch, he hides through fear of failure . I've always said wingers are better as cocky flash characters with huge self belief.

Just hope he keeps this up. Great to see.

I think that's a fair point Fox, it does say alot about his character. I thought he made some good points though about playing on the right. He's playing really well at the moment though, I hope it continues because he's a good option to have and Gerrard and Suarez seem to both link up well with him and both seem genuinely grateful for the work he does, certainly their reactions to him on the pitch are telling.

If he can add 5-10 goals, and 5-10 assists, he'll be like Kuyt ... He words hard, creates opportunities, has good movement and has got a good shot that needs respecting. I don't know where his future lies but at the current level of performance, he's a good part of the machine and it would be wise to continue with him (unless we get a stupid offer from Barca).

I don't have a problem with Downing, but.....HE WILL NEVER BE LIKE THE DIRKILIZER !

No Doubt he is playing well but if another club (sunderland/Everton/Villa) offered £10/12 million for him it would create an interesting dilemma.
