I can't recall the team with Alonso and Masher acheiving anything?

What did I miss?

Reached a champions league final and our highest finish in the premier league.

Other little things like twatting the likes of Real Madrid & Man Utd - beating Barcelona at the Camp Nou.

Maybe you can't remember that far back.

Granted its not as exciting as the race for 6th, twatting Norwich and getting to an FA Cup Final.

So we won nothing with that team right?

Even Kenny's rubbish won the league cup.

I also remember the Spearing is better than Lucas thread.

there's a tiny irony that's got lost on you with Spearing, I seem to recall during Kenny's first 6 months that he and Lucas formed a great partnership in the middle of the park, with Ming and Suarez allowed to have free reign. It worked - at least temporarily until Ming left and Spearings shortcomings eventually got found out.

It's intriguing that some of Lucas' best form came with such a similarly defensive minded player alongside him, if inferior. Maybe Lucas does benefit from having a bit of steel alongside him. Maybe that suggests that his defensive game isn't that great after all and where as most DM's are complimented by a more rounded, or more creative partner, Lucas requires someone else who can put their foot in - does that suggest his defensive game isn't all that? It's certainly interesting that he looked a better player next to a Championship standard player, than he has next to our great captain.

Oh, and shut the fuck up with the "Spearing is this, Spearing is that" bollocks, no one's making Spearing comparisons or suggesting he's the standard that should replace Lucas. Is that the best you've got to champion Lucas? Is that the best you can come up with in arguments? Pulling up old threads while missing the fucking point by a country mile? You and Ryan should start a subforum. "Sad, trolling, self-championing bellends". Or something.

The fact it raised questions way back when should tell you how divisive Lucas is, given we were scrutinising his abilities then and are still doing it now nearly 3 years later. Not that I'd expect you to see the fucking obvious through, carry on aimlessly dreaming of a midfield of Luke from Bedford, quazi-eye and that other cunt who failed at Ipswich. You're the bestest Modo.

The amazing thing about Lucas is that his most vocal supporters (Modo & Ryan - odd couple that is) make everyone who sees him more objectively become more extreme in their position.

He's not world class, he's made the Brazil squad (which doesn't make him world class - remember the famous "He'll make Brazil's world cup squad in 2010" line?) - well done, but he's a necessary cog it seems of what every manager has tried to implement here (bar Rafa when he had better options), and hence is a very important player. I wonder how he would assess himself -

I somewhat agree, but the hyperbolic criticism from the likes of Brendan, Woland, etc. served to do the same in the other direction.

Wizardry probably represents the most objective opinion.

In my opinion, if you can't get behind a lad who clearly gives his all on and off the pitch, never complains, is always humble, loves the club, and is a cracking player to boot, what's the point of all this?

It reminds me of the way some people would bash Carra and Dirk in the early years. They too were considered "divisive" at some point, and I always thought of their critics in the same was I see Lucas detractors. ie: a bunch of miserable cunts.

Oh definitely re: Brendan and Woland. I guess that's forum life - one sides swings, pushes the other and the other side swings back ...

Does not rating him mean you're not getting behind him? I dunno - I see his importance. I think we can get a better player, but it would necessarily help our team - but I respect him, love his attitude and only wish he could get to the level he played at against Yaya every game ... Then no one would bother being divisive!

I don't think 'miserable cunts' is accurate - it's part of being a fan to doubt things that you think hurt your team.

Well, the bit in bold is what's being disputed I suppose and above all else that's the point of all this - to be good at football.

Most of that is just bull.

You're probably referring to the thread I started in which I QUERIED whether or not Spearing would prove a better option than Lucas given a chance. I chose to believe that he would but that wasn't based on anything brilliant Spearing had done but more out of desperation having not been impressed with Lucas's efforts. Having seen Spearing fill the role I sadly realised that he wasn't up to the job, although he wasn't/isn't significantly worse than Lucas.

It's decided. Lucas is statistically the best. Go home lads.

This is my view on politics, religion and now Lucas, "You can't reason someone out of an opinion, if they weren't reasoned into it in the first place"

I dare say any disciplined footballer asked to track the ball and play it simple for 90 minutes every game would have good passing and tackling stats. He features much lower in the tackle success ratings. 69% so far this season compared to 73% last season.

Without context, statistics can say pretty much whatever you want them to.

85% of Delinquent's points support the use of statistics.

In general, that's true, but when he's top or top three of every statistic that is tracked that's related to the position he plays, you can't really ignore all of them. If he was only doing well in one, then yeah, by all means ignore it. But when all the evidence, besides the naked eye of some, says he's one of the best at what he does, then you'd really need to come up with something to say it's all bullshit.

This would have been enough.

One of the things I don't enjoy about this forum is the needless insulting when the debate goes against people. You point out the flaws in someone's argument and you are this and that. I come in here for some fun, and to honestly debate a bit. Moderators really do very little when someone starts flying vile around the place. It makes this place (occasionally) a pain in the arse after 7 years. It'd be good if moderators would do something about it, even if the posters in question are well liked.

Even Kenny's rubbish won the league cup.

You're right dreamy - if only we had Charlie Adam, Stuart Downing & Andy Carroll instead of Xabi Alonso, Yosi Benayoun & Fernando Torres we surely would have won more.

It was not directed against Mark, obviously.

Which stats are you talking about?
