Pre Match Pre Match - Saints (A) - Sunday 2pm

Darwin hooked at half time Vs Brazil. Looked leggy apparently.

Macca and Diaz played 90 mins.

Unlikely that those two will start against Southampton. I'd be surprised if Macca is even involved due to the yellow card situation.

Sounds like Virgil has a knock, i'd 100% rest him against Saints to make sure he's got the best chance to be 100% for City. It might be youthful / inexperienced but Saints will park the bus, i'd get Gomez in as Archer will try to use his pace.

Kelleher

Bradley
Konate
Gomez
Tsimikas

Gravy
Jones
Szobo

Salah
Nunez (or Diaz)
Gakpo

We will have some great options on the bench with Elliot looking to be back. This team is enough to beat Southampton, and ensure that we can hit City with rested Virgil, Trent, Robbo, Macca.

This has banana skin written all over it.

I agree… the portents are ominous - mainly the casual “easy win” and “rest key players”.

We should still win, and we should rotate, but those coming in should be treating this like their one chance at getting close to a starting position.

I agree with Brizzle’s team and a win of any sort, by whatever means.

The challenge is most of the 'resting' is not just to manage minutes but players who have had small injuries and we can't afford to lose for the Xmas period e.g. Virgil & Trent.

We will have 3 midfielders ready to give full beans in Grav, Jones & Szobo, a rested Mo and full backs keen to perform in Bradders & Tsimi. I think its actually a great side if that is what we put out. Recognising also Southampton have their own injury challenges.

We should only rest or rotate players where there is a need to do so. Strong teams get turned over by lesser teams when they put out over-weakened sides - their opponents, quite rightly, feel disrespected and extra-motivated. If we rest players due to fatigue / knocks, then that's OK. If we rest them because we think our reserves can beat Southampton then we're asking for trouble.

I'm worried about Szobo's fitness. I think he also needs a rest.
Slot's been managing his minutes for the last month. Other than Hungary, he hasn't played 90 mins since Leipzig. He'll be OK for the weekend, maybe not for the full 90, but I think that's more because he needs to learn to pace himself a bit more.

You have take into consideration the fact that Hungary are shit and he's their best player, meaning that after every game he looks like this:

Anyone coming back from South America should be on the bench

Oh dear. What is this total abomination.

Diaz is as fit a fiddle, dude can play 90mins 7 days a week in 7 different continents.

Harvey Elliott and Jayden Danns make full training

I have a feeling that Slot doesn't rate Elliott at all.
Danns has a long way to go. I think he's getting a loan move in January, same with Morton.
Or Morton gets sold.

Obviously it all depends on the injury situation or if we make any moves.

Slot kept pretty much the same side for the first few games then he got injured. You’re looking for something that isn’t there.

TBF I thought it was v telling that Elliot didn't get a single minute, and Slot didn't deviate from that midfield 3 at all. But he's shown with Jones he can adapt to the players performing best. I wonder if he sees Harvey as that third CM/AM or whether he sees him as a back up for Mo.

It doesn't really matter whether Slot rates Harvey right now. Harvey will prove his worth and put himself in the picture. It's what he does. There were times when he seemed to drop out of Klopp's plans, he always forced himself back in.
