So.......Shelvey.......Shite ?

This is very harsh. His movement off the ball is excellent, and it has gotten him into some great attacking positions.

I agree, his movement is not bad, I should have included that. And he is also big and strong. Still, that's not enough ingredients for a top player there, especially an attacking one. He doesn't think and react quickly enough for an attacker. Now that I think about it, maybe Shelvey with age can gradually move into sort of an Alonso role - but for that, he will need to learn to read and understand the game much better, not to mention improve his tackling and defensive work by a mile. I don't think it will happen in this team.

He seems to lash at the ball when he gets a chance at goal. There is a chance that could be down to overeagerness or inexperience (he scored quite a few at Blackpool) and perhaps if he got into a rhythm he would become more composed in front of goal.

It seems simple on paper, but if he started taking his chances then he would be considered a much better player.

Brendan Rodgers has praised the attitude of Jonjo Shelvey after the midfielder recently requested to be deployed in a holding role for Liverpool's U21s to gain experience in the position.

Most Recent News
The 21-year-old has made 29 appearances for the Reds' first team so far this season, but hasn't started a game since the clash with West Brom at Anfield on February 11.
Shelvey has since figured in U21 matches against Manchester United, Southampton and West Ham in a deeper-lying position having asked Rodgers if he can turn out for the second string to gain more playing time.

It's an approach that has delighted the manager.

Rodgers said: "Jonjo is a great kid, he wants to learn and he is prepared to work hard. He hasn't had so many chances recently, but he is still a great prospect.

"He played in a reserve game recently, and asked to be used in the holding position because he wants to learn about the role, and about his craft.

"That shows the attitude he has."

Bad luck!

He's still shite.

No he's not. He's a 20 year old inexperienced kid with alot of good assets and a few flaws that need ironing out.

I just remembered why I haven't bothered posting here all week, hyperbole aplenty and too many idiots keen to put the boot in because success hasn't happened yesterday and every kid we've got isn't the next Messi or Ronaldo.

*yawn*

A few flaws? Fucking hell. Sure, he's young and he may have potential, and all that sort of thing, but right NOW, ie, the last few games he's played for us, he's been fucking awful.

The fact that he is wanting to paly in a DM role shows a great attitude and evidence of intelligence as it should in theory imporve his game awareness and make him a better player.

Good on him, personally I don't think he is good enough but you cannot fault his attitude or commitment to trying to become a better footballer....

Good move by Shelves. Like I just said, that might be his best position if he can make the transition and survive the competition. Then his talent might come to fruitition.

Shelvey in DM role.. thats dangerous..

He wouldnt last 5 minutes at the highest level..

He would become the most redcarded player ever in the prem.. (behind Joey Barton)

A certain Stevie G used to be big time hot headed. I still remember him putting the studs into Oliver Dacourt within 5 mins of a game against Leeds. But with age and experience he calmed down. No reason not to believe the same wouldn't happen with shelvey.

That got me thinking - who has the most red cards in Premier League history.

Turns out the honour is shared between Ferguson (2 double yellows, 6 straight reds), Dunne (4, 4) and Vieira (6, 2). Cattermole is only 24 now, and already on 6 (4, 2). He is probably going to end up scaling new heights in this table.

Even Michael Owen was quite a hot head when he started out (I remember Ginsoak - surprise, surprise - suggesting to hacks that Owen was in danger of becoming some kind of dangerous borderline psychotic after he'd been sent off for us against the mancs), but, as has been said about Gerrard, he learnt to control himself. It's pretty rare for players with aggression, who need to tackle, to arrive already mature enough, and canny enough, to avoid a few disciplinary problems.

The Shelvenator has started tonight's Under 21 game quite well in a more attacking midfield role. A Gerrard-like through ball, hit early and with terrific vision, almost led to a goal for Lansbury - who was tackled so fiercely he had to hobble off. Then he took a decent free kick from about 25 yards out that forced a good save. Then he linked up well with Hendo to set up Sterling. Looks like he's slowly getting back some confidence.

I used to think we should send either one of Suso or Shelvey out on loan next season, but I'm coming around to think both should be loaned out instead. We have quite a few options now in that advanced midfield / support striker role (Suarez, Gerrard, Henderson, even Allen when he's fit, and possibly Coutinho once he settles and gets comfortable with the team/league).

I think both the club and Suso/Shelvey would benefit more by them going on loan and starting games regularly. The odd domestic cup games could then use to blood / assess the likes of Adorjan, Teixeira, Pelosi, etc. instead. At the end of next season, when Gerrard is getting on the cusp of retirement, Suso/Shelvey can then be brought back into the regular rotation, while the more successful trialists would then go on loan, freeing up the trial spots for the next generation of youngsters like Dunn, Lussey, etc. And so on.

That's how I'd like to see it anyway.

You said he's "still shite", now you're saying he's been rubbish for a few games. Bit of a difference.

Had a friend at Adams Park last night, said that Shelvey looked good, had great vision and played great through ball, however was one of the worst first touches in the business. Quite accurate description I think.

No it's not, that's a wild exaggeration, not 'quite accurate'! I think you'll find players in the Third division probably have 'the worst first touch in the business'. Shelvey certainly doesn't.

Taking it a little too literally gk.

You must, then, be the sloppiest reader in the world. Not literally, obviously. But yesterday, on a bad pitch, Shelvey showed a perfectly decent first touch except when the ball bobbled as it reached him, or a pass to him was over hit, or he was trying to spin and go past a defender as he took the ball. Now why would anyone watching that match even think, loosely, of slagging him off in an OTT way for his first bloody touch? Why are some so desperate to be negative about a player they can't even react to an improved performance without trying to contrive a criticism??

Have neither of you seen Dirk or Momo play?

You're getting way to defensive about this. If you read my post the reaction was a positive one, not slagging him off and being negative, he just makes a valid point, Jonjo's touch isn't good, it's an area he needs to improve, can we only talk about a players strengths now? The guy is a Wycombe season ticket holder, so he's used to the pitch and how players react to it, he also isn't on any kind of agenda against Shelvey, it was the first time he's seen him in the flesh and he was giving an honest opinion of the player.

No, YOU are getting way too defensive about a stupid comment.

Shelvey can be a top player and was well on his way. He needs to sort his head out. That's where it all went pear shaped for him. Could be a case of him believing the hype.

It's just a case of more playing time really, he's very talented, he just needs to experience. He was fantastic at Blackpool, I hope he can go on loan to a club like WBA or Norwich or someone like that next season, that would be perfect for him.

People seem to forget how young the lad is. Give him regular football and a good loan spell. He'll come back a better player and will benefit all parties involved.

I watched the game last night, well most of it. I thought Shelvey did OK, quite well in fact. I can't say I've ever noticed Shelvey having a really poor first touch. He has good and bad games and his last few in a red shirt have been poor and he can do better. I thought Henderson played really well last night though. His movement and passing were excellent.
