So.......Shelvey.......Shite ?

Doesn't the term "mirror" refer to a faithful reflection / depiction, meaning that if A mirrors B, then A resembles B?
I know that the mirror image is laterally inverted, but I'm not sure if we use the term "mirror" to imply opposites. Or have I been learning the wrong thing all this while?

Funny you say that, I did spending a couple of seconds wondering if mirror was the right word, but my tired brain just thought fuck it.

Get your facts straight, I have never once called Shelvey a cunt, or been particularly negative about him.

Ha! I was talking about Ryan with his "he's a bag of cunt" bollocks, while telling us all season how great Allen is, another player who's clearly struggled but has time on his side to get it right.

Well, I do apologise! And yes I agree, it's easy to forget Shelvey is only 20 and has scored a hat trick in Europe this season. Not many can boast that. He needs time.

You must have realised by now that Ryan could probably write all he knows about football on the inside of a matchbox

Shelvey is ace but he's not been playing and he shouldn't have come on last night. I don't think anyone understood those subs - we were going to fucking score!

Really big ask for him last night, hes way off form and he was coming into a high pressure situation where he was more likely to disturb the rhythm the team was building that anything else. Im not writing him off yet, young players go through patches like this, when that happens they need to be protected and removed from the pressure/glare of the fans. In another month people will be calling Sterling a useless cunt, thats the way things are these days. You would think people would have seen enough from Lucas and Henderson recently to know that we need to be patient with promising young players.

Id like to see him go on loan next season for 6 months to build up his first team experience, I think Suso would benefit from the same, there is a point in some players development where playing in the reserves hinders their progress but they are not quite ready to play in the first team regularly, for me Sterling Shelvey and Suso are all at that stage in their development. Of the 3 probably only 1 of them will end up having a career with us long term

He does need help with his mentality - maybe that psychotherapist/witchdoctor can help. Apparently he had a big dip in form like this when he was at Charlton - he baffled fans with the change in his performances. What makes it all the odder is the fact that, contrary to some speculation, he's not some callow egomaniac who sulks at the first hint of criticism - he actually appreciates what an honour it is to play for a club like this and by all accounts his application in training is excellent - but he is still a young kid and he's just not that great at coping with any loss of form. At the moment he looks like a punctured player, all the confidence and self-belief has slipped out of him, and there's not much point in giving him little cameos to underline this fact. So he has to grow up a bit and find a way to respond more positively and logically to setbacks, but he HAS got ability and I think he's got a future here. On form he gives the manager several options and gives the team some real variety and an element of surprise.

All this "bag of cunt talk". Pack it in, I'm getting a twitch here but stuck in work.

Da da ding-da-ding!

Hes what he was a year ago. A young player with promise.
Hes taking some unjust flak recently and it always seems to be his fault we fail.
Thats just bollocks, and the same things that apply to Allen, Suso, Sterling, Coutinho, Wisdom etc apply to him. What 20 year old midfielder ever ran a team, played well all the time or never drifted in and out of form.
I said it the other day, these boys need years to develop. Not 3 games then a slagging.

Ive as much faith in him as anyone else. And given the destruction Lucas faced for years before becoming an invaluable player you would think people would know better.
But by all means continue, i'll support the lads and see where that takes us. Others will want them sold and 25m replacements brought in.

The only reason his confidence is gone is because of his own finishing. He had plenty of good chances to score and become a regular in the team. But he put them wide, and now he's paying the price for not having anything else really to show for his ability.

Let's not forget it was partly due to his contributions in the group stage that we even got to this point. He's out of form and out of confidence. Why dismiss him now? Wait and see. Give him some time.

If his shot had gone in, this thread would have a totally different context " Is Shelvey the next gerrard/zidane .....". It is a game of very fine margins.

He is 20 years old and is very very inconsistent. It is expected of players of that age. He does have footballing ability and the ability to make things happen on the field. Yes, he does not show it day in day out but it is worth persisting with players with that quality. He was low on confidence and form. He should not have been introduced in that pressure cooker situation especially when the team was ticking along nicely.

Ronaldo had an extreme dip in form after his initial few outings with the Mancs. Ferguson took him off the team and even asked him to take a break and go back to Portugal during Christmas, spend time with the family and come back when his head was correct. Then he was slowly reintroduced back into the team.

I am not a football coach and I may most likely have 10% of the knowledge which most of you have. But I am a teacher and I work day to day with talented youngsters and have some insights on how to develop them. They key is to provide an environment where you don't penalize the youngsters for making mistakes when they are realizing their talent and protecting them when their confidence is fragile.
Unfortunately due to our situation (league position, finances, management) we don't seem to provide that environment.

Maybe Shelvey will end up being a Championship player. But I dont think that decision should be taken based on the past few months performances.

I can forgive dips in firm, confidence issues and all that, but there is no need to come on and start hoofing people up in the air and giving daft free kicks away when our defence is suspect to dead-balls.
He is fucking brain dead on occasions, and that makes him a liability he needs to sort that.

regards

Id honestly rather that than just let the likes of Hulk run straight at us Vlad.
If Shelvey had been in Carraghers position last night or in Hendersons last week, Hulk might have got booted up in the air instead of two goals.

That's a fair point.

Spot on, Vlad. While he might be only 20, people still have a right to expect a bit of basic common sense from him.

If Shelvey had been in Carra's position last night and booted Hulk up in the air, we would have been playing with 10 men on a 2 goal deficit.

I think the backlash against people like Shelvey when he has a dip in form is proportionate to the absolute tripe that is posted about how good he is when he plays well. As others have said, he's young and if he takes his job seriously and is well coached he could still be a good player for us or someone else. It looks now like Rodgers did him a disservice bringing him on last night but he did nearly score!

He clearly didn't buy any lucky heather from his Auntie, and has been cursed forever with baldness and the inability to make a correct decision on the pitch in 2013.

Yup, he does need to cut it out, Lucas used to do it alot aswell but seems to have cut it out a fair bit.

I think its a common enough reaction for a young player who is under pressure and in a bad run of form, they dont have the confidence to go and assert their game properly so through a combination of frustration and wanting to be able to have some/any impact on the game. People will more often criticise a player for pulling out of a tackle than going in too hard so the pressure is on them to make that tackle or be written off as 'total lightweight cunt' or whatever the phrase of the day is

And anybody who calls his tackling reckless would do well to remember Gerrard at the same age, I used to wince watching him go into a 50/50 challenge. Im not saying Shelvey is as good a player but I see the attitude as similar, the need to impress and prove yourself, the frustration when things are going against you. Gerrard was too good to leave out of the team on those occasions but Shelvey isnt, I think he needs to be carefully managed, and to be fair Rodgers had removed from the spotlight recently, maybe last night with the atmosphere at boiling point and us on the verge of historic result it was a little too much for somebody of his temprement, but I would take a young guy who comes on and wants to get involved over somebody who hides from the ball every day of the week

I think there is quite a lot wrong with this, it's not about reckless tackling, it's about daft and pointless tackling we should not be having to chose between hiding and jumping in either, for £50k a week upwards regardless of how experienced I still think we should expect not to see somone acting like a Sunday league player.
I have and still am a supporter of Jonjo, I still have hopes for him, but he needs to grow up and stop acting like a knob on occasions, and be more mature.

He can't shoot. He can't tackle. Loan him out. He's only 20. He needs the experience. Sitting on our bench week in week out won't help.
