So.......Shelvey.......Shite ?

It's like pace. In spite of the modern game always being hailed as incredibly fast, hardly anyone, it seems, can move much beyond walking pace. Most players, we're told, don't just lack lightning pace, or exceptional pace, they're 'the slowest players in the world' or 'snail-like'. There's nowhere constructive to go from these silly assertions, I don't know why they're indulged, they're signs of lazy thinking.

Kuyt had periods were his first touch was excellent, and then times when it was truly dreadful.

I think his first touch was usually dreadful under Benitez, but he was often making up for it with his workrate and propensity for scoring in important games. I think his first touch actually improved after Kenny took over, and we saw the best of Kuyt when Kenny played him as Suarez's partner or at least closer to Suarez during his caretaker period. Somehow, the quartet of Suarez, Kuyt, Maxi and Meireles clicked well. Looking back at the stats - he had an amazing stretch near the end of the season when he scored 9 goals and got 3 assists in 8 games. He finished the season with 13 goals and 7 assists, statistically the best of his Liverpool career (when we finished second in 08/09, he had 12 and 8). Unfortunately, Kenny went and undid all the good work.

For what it's worth, I don't think Shelvey's first touch is as bad as Kuyt's most of the time. At least I don't remember screaming at Shelvey or slapping my forehead on seeing the ball bounce 3 feet off him, while I was often screaming at Kuyt over that back then.

Two sent off as Shelvey sparkles for England U21s

Jonjo Shelvey scored a sizzling free-kick and Josh McEachran netted a penalty as England Under-21s beat the nine men of their Austrian counterparts 4-0 on Monday.
Marvin Sordell, on for the excellent Shelvey, poked home England's third with his first touch before Connor Wickham added a fourth in a dominant performance from Stuart Pearce's side.

The pace of the game is completely unrelated to the physical speed of a player, surely.

He's still shit
Apparantly, he's not. He's "inexperienced".

It's strange, because I always thought someone giving a consistent run of shit performances was enough to warrant them being labelled as "shit". Seemingly not though.

You said earlier that he's been shit for a few games, so 20 year old's these days getting a stint in and out of the side is considered a "consistent run of performances" and enough to make a final judgement on. Really? You're either really impatient or completely contradictory, or both.

You know you're posting utter bollocks when that cretin Moo agrees with you.

Anyway, glad to see that utterly shit and hopeless Shelvey has 'sparkled' (and scored) once again.

Not completely, but, yes, there's a distinction, but my point is the general criticism is almost always risibly exaggerated, like those morbidly obese prats who sit in the stands shouting out 'Fat Fwank' at Lampard.

The good thing is Shelvey is finally showing signs of regaining his confidence, and if he's viewed without prejudice now people will see that and be pleased to see a good young player start showing more of his potential.

Maybe I am impatient. What of it? When I say "a consistent run of shit performances", I'm basing it on the last number of games he's played for us. And yes, he's been utter cack. Call it inexperience, a victim of youth or whatever you want, but the bottom line is, he's been fucking useless for us. I'm willing to give him time and I certainly haven't written him off yet, but as of now, he's more suited to the U21 team, or even the reserve team. He's not good enough for the first team.

Great, but that doesn't equate to him being shit in the context that you've expressed it throughout this thread and certainly as you agreed above with that clusterfuck Moo, ie, despite scoring again the other night, he's still "shit" as in, "always will be", which is pretty much the impression you've given throughout this thread. Like I said, make up your mind. The point of the thread was to highlight his potential, or lack of. Now you're saying here that he's not good enough (yet - maybe). Stop writing a 20 year old inexperienced kid off, or at least make your point a bit more clear and concise then "huh, he's shit". Post a brainless post and expect to be treated in kind. If you'd said "he's not good enough for the first team but I'm willing to give him time" in the first place (as you just backtracked to), it would have given more perspective to your point than just saying "he's shit", and then agreeing with that idiot and compounding your point again.

So let's just be honest, you don't rate him, you think he's shit and you're not going to give him time to prove otherwise, certainly not sufficient time anyway, otherwise you wouldn't have acted like a typical delirious glory hunter writing him off after half a season of fleeting appearances (16 in all) in an already inconsistent side.

Mark, 99% of the time I agree with everything you say, but right now you're arguing semantics here, and frankly I can't be arsed. If I worded it badly, then I apologise. I'm saying he's shit. But yes, he's young and has potential etc. But right now, in our first team, he's shit.
