First start in the Premiership and a very tough game. How do you think he went? I thought he played quite well and was surprised to see him taken off. Where do you see him playing in the future?
As a side note, I thought Poulsen was quite impressive today as well.

Poulsen improved as the game went on and put in a few noteworthy challenges, but it's hard to big him up too much because he isn't very good.

Yet to come to any sort of judgement on Meireles. I don't think he was especially good today.

Agree with you on both points J.
Probably because he has practically no Premiership expeirence he was played in a more forward role today but based on last Thursdays match I would hope to see him partner Poulsen in centre mid with Stevie, Cole and Kuyt ahead.

I thought that Poulsen was pretty decent today, made lots of interceptions and tackles and usually had his head up looking to pass it forward.

Oh, and if anyone is looking for a positive from todays game...........................

Lucas didn't play.

I thought he did better as the game went on. He shouldnt be playing in advance of Gerrard tho

Poulsen did ok too I thought. He's a far better option than Lucas.

according to rawk that was the single reason we lost today quote 'not playing lucas when he proved he is a world class finisher is an unforgivable decision'.

Raul may not be match fit but should have partnered Poulsen rather. Gerrard gives us a bit of invention and creativity behind Torres.

Torres needs all the help he can get and Gerrard is the man to drag him out of his slump.

I like the look of Meireles. He's a quick passing, busy midfielder who looks to get things moving and he has some nice touches. I don't see him chipping in with too many goals, more a player that will add a quicker tempo to our central midfield area.

Poulsen, all he has to offer is experience, he's too slow and very limited.

I thought mereiles did alright for a first start in the prem away from home against serious opposition, hope to see him play more centrally in future not sure what the point of pushing him forward was today but it didnt really work

Both Meireles and Poulsen can hold their hands up and say they did ok. What let us down today was a few things. Maxi and Joe did nothing well for a good hour. The best thing Maxi did was walk off. Joe was not trying to take on anyone and played the safe ball allways. He should have risked something.

He looks a good player, but he should not play in the hole. Why Roy has decided to play him there is a strange one.

I think we should dispense with 4-2-3-1 altogether.

They both did well in my opinion but if your listing the frailties from today then Carra has to be in there, his performaces are starting to get to the point where its questionable if his experience and commitment is enough to compensate from a chronic lake of pace and poor aeriel ability. It may be time to move him into the Sami role of being called upon when a certin skill set is needed but no longer an automatic selection, he seems more paniced now than ever and he never exactly had ice in his veins

Yep, I agree.

Carra is on the decline. However, Agger and Skrtel dont exactly fill me with confidence either.

True. The way we give away possesion sometimes today is horrific.

I'm sure your either drunk or someone's hacked your 6SM account Insig.

Your posting doesn't seem like you and your reasoning and observational skills are non-existent.

Meireles had an excellent game (and it seems most people agree since he is in most people's Top 3 in the MoM thread). His composure on the ball, eye for a pass and movement up & down the pitch really impressed me. This guy IS very good and he's going to prove it.

Poulson - posters pooh poohing him, however again in most people's MoM Top 3. He did everything that was asked of him and he did it against Untied at OT. What more do you want ? If he plays like this week in week out we won't miss Masher as much as I thought we would.

Time for Kyrgiakos to come in? We'd certainly do better in the air with him back there.

I'd be tempted to give Kelly some time in the middle, he can head the ball and is able to move faster than an oil tanker.

Agree with this; Meireles looks like a good buy.

As for Poulsen, he did improve as the game went on..so KHL may eventually be vindicated ;D

Meireless will prove to be an excellent player for us. I like what I see.

Poulsen may well turn out to be very decent. Thought he was very good today. Let's hope he can maintain this level.

For some reason he seemed to be playing the advanced role in the first half and I don't think it worked. Looked much better in the second half though. Jury is still out.

He was probably deployed in the advanced role because he needs to get used to the league, I'm confident it isn't his long term position. I guess he'll be interchanging with Gerrard (much like in the second half today) in the middle between Torres and Poulsen or hopefully even without a DM with Cole off Torres against weaker teams.

Fair point that. Hodgson needs to be allowed to try different combos to see what works/doesn't without being micro-analysed so soon. If it doesn't work then change it. Just dont be inflexible like last season.

I can't understand the logic in him being in advance of Gerrard.

Odd tactic from Roy.

Poulsen is getting better each game, he is neat and tidy and does not give the ball away and is starting to show he can tackle.

Miereles similarly looks neat and tidy, and a bit of a brain, he played ahead of Gerrard today probably as he is still finding his feet and it is safer to play him further forward

regards

Agree. Maybe some of the derogatory nicknames might disappear soon. I certainly hope so
