Wow. Really is sad.

No need to ruin the thread with debate over which is worse between alcohol and smoking. We can see the effects of alcohol and addiction here and they are truly shocking.

He basically needs 24 hour care.... which is a real shame....

Lets hope he is the last of these football cases in our lifetime...

The George Best of our Generation.

But to be honest I wouldnt be surprised if we see another one day the way footballers are paid nowadays.

It's only a matter of time until Jack Wilshere is forced to check into rehab for cigarettes.

True, it's the addiction that is damaging, no matter what the drug.

So many words have been wasted on and about him over the past 20 odd years. I fear the only ones left are Rest In Peace. I really hope that this time he gets responsible help and manages to overcome this, but it seems like an inexorable downward spiral.

That Statham picture is so gay.
Luckily Spag isn't around to encourage my slightly offensive views.
He was always such a willing soul in that regard.

Paul Gascoigne: QPR boss Harry Redknapp offers coaching job
QPR boss Harry Redknapp has offered an open invitation to former England midfielder Paul Gascoigne to help out with coaching his young players.
Gascoigne, 47, has had a history of health-related problems and is reported to have been taken from his Dorset home by emergency services on Friday.
Redknapp lives in close proximity to Gascoigne on the South Coast.
He said: "If he wants to do it I would pick him up every morning at 0545 at the end of his road and bring him in."

Gascoigne's sublime Euro 96 goal against Scotland
Pictures in several newspapers published on Friday morning showed Gascoigne looking gaunt and almost unrecognisable from his playing days.
Twitter users sent messages of sympathy and support to his daughter Bianca, which she retweeted and wrote in response: "Thank you for your kind words."
Redknapp added: "He is a great lad and it is just sad to see how he is looking at the moment.
"I saw him about a month ago and I said 'I will pick you up in the mornings Gazza, come training with me. Do a little bit of work with the kids.'
"I would love it if he would do that, that is an open invitation to him.
"I see Gazza around and I love Gazza, he has got a heart of gold.
"He has probably given his last penny away but that is just how he is. Everyone has tried to help him but the only person who can help him now is himself - everyone has tried."
Gascoigne was 17 when he made his Newcastle debut in 1985, before moving to Tottenham in 1988 for £2.3m - a British transfer record at the time.
Gazza's years of struggles
May 1991: While playing for Tottenham against Nottingham Forest in the FA Cup Final, he sustained a serious cruciate ligament injury after committing a wild and reckless challenge in the early minutes of the game.
June 1996: An alcohol-related "dentist-chair" stunt in a Hong Kong bar during England's Euro 96 preparations puts Gascoigne on the front pages of the newspapers back in Britain.
January 1998: He was given a warning by the Scottish FA after miming "playing the flute" - a sectarian gesture - during an Old Firm game against Celtic.
August 1998: Gascoigne's marriage to Sheryl ends after she is granted a quick divorce. The player left his wife with a black eye and badly bruised face and arm after he attacked her in a drunken rage in Gleneagles, Scotland.
October 1998: The 31-year-old is admitted to the Marchwood Priory hospital to receive treatment for stress and drink problems.
June 2001: Gascoigne admits himself to an alcohol rehabilitation clinic in Arizona on his Everton manager Walter Smith's insistence.
March 2004: He talked about his problems in his autobiography, including his struggles with obsessive compulsive disorder, bulimia, depression and Tourette's syndrome.
May 2007: Undergoes emergency surgery for a perforated stomach ulcer.
February 2008: Gascoigne is arrested in Newcastle and detained under the Mental Health Act.
August 2013: He was fined £1,000 for assaulting a railway guard and being drunk and disorderly at Stevenage railway station in July.
August 2014: Several national newspapers report Gascoigne being taken to hospital by ambulance looking gaun
He helped England reach the semi-finals of the 1990 World Cup and Euro 96, and also played for Lazio, Rangers, Middlesbrough, Everton, Burnley and Chinese side Gansu Tianma.
But he has suffered a string of personal issues since he last played professionally, for League Two Boston United in 2004.
On Thursday it was announced that Gascoigne was set to play football again after signing for Sunday League Division Four team Abbey FC in Bournemouth.

He needs to fucking stay away from kids. Offer that job to John Barnes or whoever.

Really?
How many smokers die annually towards alcoholics.
Alcohol doesn't just kill people, it causes widespread disorder and violent crimes and wrecks families. A simple death count is not always the best way to judge.

Just go to any high street on a Friday or Saturday night to see the widespread effects of alcohol.

What the fuck, Jason Stratham is 47!!

I clicked on this link earlier with a little tinge of dread, one of these days it's going to be the worst news. It's awful seeing someone ruin themselves with seemingly no one able to fix it.

Hes a fucking wab.
The trouble is, he's always been surrounded by people who've exploited him. Yes he doesn't help himself, but a lot of his so called helpers were the devils disciples and they've all disappeared now leaving him pretty much helpless and alone.

The guy is sick. I know most will say there's only say many times you can help someone, but do we just give up and let him go? Im sure many would say yes, having been through my own torment a few times of late, although I don't look as bad as him, it's been my support network, that has given me the strength to battle the demons.

Self help? Of course. Support network? Definitely as well.

Smoking by and large (at least in today's society) affects only the smoker, alcohol affects way more, domestic violence, crime, vandalism etc... Go into a&e on any Friday or Sat night and compare the number of emergencies caused by smoking to drinking. The biggest issue being that people don't see alcohal as the dangerous depressant it is. It dwarfs all other drugs in terms of negative impact globally.

Yes but that's similar too passive smoking which is a massive killer too.
There is absolutely no way that alcohol is the most dangerous drug in the world.
You might want to read up on the most respected studies on the subject before you look even more foolish than you already are.
As stated above, when you consider all factors, alcohal is in a league of it's own for 3 main reasons.
1. It's the most widespread drug consumed
2. It is the drug that has the most dramatic effect on the human body that is legally allowed (hence point one above)
3. It's socially acceptable to abuse alcohol day in day out with nobody batting an eyelid unless you get to the extreme like in Gazzas case.

I agree, some of the posting in this thread is horrendous.

You might want to learn how to spell it first before you start your moronic argument.
Studies in the Us showed last year that smoking related diseases caused almost double the amount of deaths than smoking, murders, car accidents and suicides combined.
So where are your facts?

Ohh you're so determined to be right that you fucked your own post up.

I like the way you are determined to use the death count as the definer for this. It's not all about death it's about the overall effect on society that alcohol has.

I was being ironic.
Anyway I'd like to see the facts here.
