Virgiling on the vandijkulous

Sometimes 2nd / 3rd choices work out pretty well.

Mane vs Goetze.

What a lucky escape Goetze was.

This is very true. But so far I've not seen much evidence of any second or third choices in the positions we need to fill with top quality to have any genuine chances of a title challenge this season: LB, CB, striker, CM.

Meanwhile Chelsea and City are getting business done, and they were better than us to begin with. And United are also going to spend loads.

True but on the other side of the fence we are a second or third choice (if that) for top players as well.

It's cool if we're genuinely trying to show the footballing community we aim to be a force again but if I was a player I'd be very very wary of being the first one to make that leap of faith.

We're shopping in a pretty good market this summer as there are a lot of talented players around. 2nd or 3rd choice shouldn't mean stopgap / average players.

No, absolutely "second choice" should still mean "great". But we haven't really been linked with hardly anyone, apart from that fucking LummOX from Arsenal.

I would've thought the club would've have tapped up a left back about 6 months ago, so im a lil surprised nothing has come of that yet.

That said any top player looks at the premier league and knows the top four is anyone's guess but at the same time , if a team were to drop out its likely us, as things stand ,obvs

i imagine a £60m VVD signing a few weeks back would've settled a few nerves externally and within the club when it comes to targets.

£120m Net on 3 players and id be hella confident we would be would a top 4 side.

i dont think we Need to spend massive on a centre back as having a half decent player in front of him should alleviate alot of the er 'thinking' moments that cost us goals.

lacazette, boss DM and a competent left back along with Salah and i think were cooking on gas

The squad would still be a little too thin.

For example, an injury to either Matip or Lovren and it's Klavan or... ? We need a CB too.

Yes. Aside from the number of games and the draining high tempo style in which we play, we also have a fair number of players prone to injuries, so we need a BIG squad. It didn't take much last season for our defence, midfield and forward line (more of a forward dot, I guess) to seem weakened. We've got a few kids now who could help out more effectively than they did last season, but there's going to have to be a lot of rotation and we need more quality.

What have I missed - who have Chlesea signed?
Also, City have signed a Silva like player (Doesn't help them) & that 23 year old Brazilian goalie .. Not exactly getting their 'business' done (they wanted Walker, were linked with Rose and a host of other players).
We'll be ok.

i think we've had some bad luck ,coupled with a more physically exerting game , id like to think refinements are on going in respect to the physicality of our game , the centre backs of all positions in a klopp system should move the least , after all.

So yeah a cb would be good but not at the expense of a baller up top, an ace midfielder and a decent left back . My fear is that we have always operated in an either / or basis and id like to see those three positions nailed before the cb solution sorted

You people are forgotten we've already signed Salah, we are hardly dragging our feet because we haven't signed VVD and Keita yet

Yep. and who knows what we're getting done behind the scenes. Maybe the vvd saga has taught us to just shut up and get the job done

Someone here put up a list of player transfers that had been confirmed by the end of June in last Summer's transfer window : 4 of the Top 6 had one bought player each and 2 Top 6 teams had a zero next to their name. A long long way to go.

Southampton have signed a Polish centre half as well though it is unclear whether he is a Van Dijk replacement

We need to start being linked to other "good" CB's soon - because we're not catching VVD.

The fact that we are not is a pretty clear indication that LFC top brass still think VVD is coming here. Hope they know what they're doing (this time)...

Care to share your insight into how he was shit (not his team, but VVD himself) against the top 3 sides? And what about the majority of games he played in? Was he shit in those as well?

He's back in for pre-season training
