Virgiling on the vandijkulous

Could it be the case that Southampton have held back on producing the evidence and have said they will continue to do so as long as we stay away. Hence the premier league can't take it any further at this stage.

If that were the case, I'd imagine that conversation would have taken place before a complaint was made. I think this is the end of it regardless.

Fair point, but Klopp really wants this guy and he really wants us. We should defo be thinking about a back-up plan but I'd still like us to get van Dijk if poss.

Southampton are like a greengrocer who's caught a customer squeezing a peach and said, 'Oi, don't squeeze the peaches!' But instead of saying, 'Don't put it back now, you idiot, you'll have to buy it!' They've gone, 'Put it back, say sorry, and leave my shop!' So now they have a squeezed peach on their hands. The fools!

Love all the peachy parts to this. It's an massively underused fruit in daily conversations

Can we switch this thread to fruit now? Tesco have Mexican red seedless grapes at the moment - I cannot recommend them too highly. And they are morally virtuous as it's good to encourage Central American countries to grow healthy things. 🙂

Did you not hear? They're made in Albania, by a fella who's last name is Mexico.

Surely there are other CBs to go for. He's good I get that but fuck me if mourinho can find a good CB for 35m then what are our scouts doing?
How do you know Lindelof is s a good CB ? In a recent Sweden game he was average to shite and outplayed by his partnering CB, but supposedly he has also been excellent for Benfica too (maybe coming from Benfica partly explains his OK price). He's very young and far from the finished article. Maureen has bought potential (as in say at a Martial level) rather than an established star and at this stage can not be compared to VVD on a number of aspects that have bumped up his price.

Apparently signing him may cost them Michael Keane. A report in at least one paper today claims he had been k(eane) on a move back to Old Toilet but is having second thoughts, as he reckons the signing of Lindelöf may reduce his playing time.

I read that Keane was joining Everton?

Reports circulating that Pellegrino sought assurances that Soares and VvD would both be kept before he signed as manager.

Unfortunately, between this and Ralf Ragnick's determination to hold onto Keita, it looks like the club's top two targets may escape them.

Are these assurances along the lines of those offered to Ronald Koeman when he joined?

Our three main targets appear to be Keita, VVD and Salah right?

And we look like getting one of them.

Whether you believe the assurances to be concrete or not, you surely can't deny that the existence of them plus the price tag, Southampton's attitude towards us and our own public ending of interest, make the chances of this transfer look less and less likely.

To us, maybe

I'd like to hibernate for July and wake up to some surprise sexy signings

*wakes up on 1st August, still no more signings yet, but Liverpool hot in pursuit of 60m signings Ryan Shawcross, Aaron Creswell after missing out on Chelsea-bound van Dijk and Keita who recently signed an extension at Leipzig, and in other news Barcelona are near to signing Coutinho after he handed in a transfer request*

Are we seriously thinking of buying this defender for the quoted amount ? Fuck right off. Yes we need a defender but not at that price and especially not him. Some people on here are seiously overrating this guy. Just look at the results southampton had against the other teams.... and not just the result and performances against us. Our performances against them were in times of difficulty plus they did park the bus defending against us which can make any defender look great. Its all bollox and we should look elsewhere. Southampton players i think turn up for us in games because given the transfers in recent years they think its a job interview !!!

As far as the VVD issue is concerned, I wouldn't be surprised if Pellegrino did indeed ask that, but the club can't speak for the player. Look at what happened when Rafa came in. I doubt that he wanted Owen or Gerrard to leave, and of course he flew over to talk about his plans with the two of them that summer, but Owen still left. If VVD wants to go, he'll almost certainly go.

True. But then there's also every chance - given that the mess with our efforts to sign him came before the managerial change - that van Dijk has now been told he won't be sold this summer and has accepted it. While Owen left for Real Madrid, Suarez was offered enough to stay on for another year after the Arsenal bid, Southampton have the capacity to do the same if they really want to keep him.

The complaint about tapping up changes the complexion of this situation in my opinion, a few here have speculated that Southampton were pissed off about there being no bidding war, but maybe they just really do want to keep him - he was the best CB in the league after all. They are on their 5th manager in as many years now and have a very high churn rate for their top performers, maybe they are ready to get off the merry-go-round.

The truth is, we won't know until he either moves or the window closes with him still at Southampton.
