Virgiling on the vandijkulous

Di marzio claiming the move to chelsea is almost done
Where was this mentioned? All I've seen is that Conte prefers Van Dijk or Bonucci and that they've put a bid in (which has only been reported by Sky Italia). Doesn't look like it's anywhere near done, especially with Southampton only just announcing new manager.

Southampton are secretly hoping Lfc will do what half of the folk in this thread are doing and that they'll panic at a tenous link to another club and so wade in with a daft price. For the sake of clarity, anything over £55.57 mill is daft.
If Chelsea want to do that, cool. I'll take one of the up and coming vvds for half the price and blow the rest on an amazing left back.

Could be Chelsea using a "bid" for van Dijk to get some progress on a deal with Bonucci as well.
Juventus will probably sell in the end with those extreme fees being mentioned.

I'd just like to say that this thread title deserves an award for the extreme ends of both optimism and cynicism this saga has now led to.

Reports are that Chelsea are wary that he'll reject them.

Playing devils advocate, could it be that we've said to Southampton, we'll match any accepted bid, but won't bid ourselves until a certain point i.e. deadline day. Hence why Southampton accepted our apology, we haven't officially bid. But neither have any other teams so far.

If this is the case, this could go down to the wire, as teams like Chelsea and City will be thinking the longer it goes on, the more they hope VvD will become disillusioned with Liverpools handling of the affair.

In other news Trump now suspected to be in cohorts with Putin to bring down the USA and not just Clinton.

I hope we haven't told them we'll match any accepted bid. We hold the cards in this now. No way should we throw them on the table like that.

70m on a lad who hasn't done it on the big stage and hasn't kicked a ball in 6 months, not sure I care if we go elsewhere

I've said all along I'd prefer we spent £25m on Keane or Gibson. Thats £45m we could put towards another player. Or we could buy both for the amount we want to spunk on VvD.

We have no cards. None. Don't kid yourself.

That's what they're hoping we'll think, but I don't buy it for a single second. The player has made it crystal clear that he's dead set on a move to us, even to the extent of apparently rejecting a Chelsea transfer. Southampton are now faced with the choice of (a) selling him to us or (b) cutting their nose off to spite their face and seeing his value collapse while he stinks the place out and/or rots in the reserves.

If he's the type to stink the place out, we don't want him. And I don't think he would.

That's a fair point to an extent. In this case though, biased as I am, I'd have some sympathy for a player acting up when his current club pulled the plug on a move he badly wanted by choosing to kick up a fuss about something which is pretty common in football, and which other clubs haven't spotlit in anything like the same way.

The odds have very slightly improved, I think, now they have a new manager, because he'll talk to the player, and make an effort to make him stay, but he'll surely want to move the player on if there's real resistance there. As a manager you don't want to start with a big player who is going to be a problem.

Yeah, similar to how Rodgers got rid of Andy Carroll in his first summer.

As unhelpful to the cause as Pellebastard was when he was here I wouldnt hold out any hope of him doing us any favours now hes at Southampton.
Useless big wanker.

Parry just said we tried to be clever back then; Crouch and Pennant instead of Alves.

Buy Keane or Gibson and we will end up with another player of Lovren's level. Back to square 1 imo.

Hahahah. Good old Oncey with his never-to-be-diminished Pellegrino hatred.

If his Scummer career is any reflection of his time at Liverpool in terms of his positive contribution to our success, then I'd expect us to buy Shane Long for £25m.
