Regardless of experience, reputation or anything else I wouldn't now pay more for van Dijk than I would for Gibson. Through their greed and stupidity Southampton have gone and got themselves over a barrel. We should absolutely squeeze them to the maximum on this.

Reference the bolded bit: I'm not, and that's the crux of the matter. Even if he does his best, that won't be as good as it's been up till now (with the side effect that his transfer value will fall). Whoever succeeds Puel is still going to have to replace van Dijk sooner or later.
