Virgiling on the vandijkulous

I've not followed this farrago too closely, because I'm not that interested in the who/ what/ why of apportioning blame, but I do wonder what Klopp makes of all this, and what it might do for his relationship with Michael Edwards, who seems to be getting much of the blame.

Mind you, FSG might just sack him regardless.

But, he's World Class.

I actually think this is not Edwards fault. We as a club have been doing shit like this for years. Leaking stories to the press etc. I wouldn't be surprised if it's so common practice within the club that when he took over the reigns on transfers from are he was briefed about all these little things to do to drive a better position for the club

All clubs leak - some just do it better than others. It's true that our transfer operations have been iffy for some time, but this mess sets a new low for sheer incompetence.

We're that guy who has all the right game to get the hot bird to go home with him, but once home he wants her to play scrabble and drink tea.

Nah we're the Sherminator from American Pie. Blagging on to anybody who will listen about all the hotties we have lined up, left pissing our pants when called out on it.

I could almost forgive a leak. At least a leak suggests some (albeit grossly misguided) intentional act. But I think this was more a case of alarming naivety, with someone calling a contact at the club and the person was so pleased about the deal he chatted away believing no details would actually go into print until after the deal was formally done. And that suggests a degree of stupidity that is scary.

What happened that Ian Cotton guy? Wasn't he our press officer during the Houllier/Rafa era?

That doesn't seem to be quite the way it went down because didn't three supposed ITKs all release statements within 2 mins of each other ? Seems to have been more co-ordinated.

Why let it die when we are going to sign him in a few weeks regardless of the mess?

Yeh I can see that shit happening. Slim but possible. Southampton save face by showing their fans that they won't allow other clubs to take the piss and tap their players up to stop a bidding war, they slap the price up to 60mill instead of the much lower figure we probably bid and we just pay up anyway. It's a lot less likely that the big spenders come in to blow that kinda money on a player who's just declared that he wants to go to play for Klopp at Liverpool.
I know we've publicly ended all interest etc, but if we pick up the blower and offer £70 mill for him, we'll all be best of friends again. Money talks.

This is unbelievable. According to one report we're interested in buying another player...from Southampton. Tadic. We should not deal with those bastards again until we gather enough evidence to expose THEIR tapping up activities.

Its from Duncan Castles though

After we expose their tapping up activities, they're bound to want to do business with us.

Ah, the first 'I'm so much smarter than everyone else I MUST make this very clear with a gratuitously snide, witheringly sarcastic and headwandingly unsubtle post' of the week! How very welcome.

The club didn't get caught tapping up. Some massive bellend at the club got caught talking about it.

Ginsoak regularly - yes, Mark, regularly - met players in hotels, their own houses, at airports, at games, wrote to them, called them, paid for family members to travel here and there, etc etc. But the club never leaked it or crowed about it before any transfer. Paisley met Dalglish in Glasgow before making any enquiry to Celtic. Roy Evans left messages as 'The Man from Del Monte' when sounding out Collymore long before the club contacted Forest. Houllier got up to all kinds of pretty blatant stuff when he was persuading players to sign. Rafa did it with Keane. It's done, frequently, by us and others, and only a tiny amount of thought is needed to realise that the system would hardly work if it didn't happen. But it's the publicising of it that upsets clubs. Whoever it was who briefed the hacks like this should go, as soon as possible.

I know this Macca, I wasn't saying we look like chumps for doing it, I meant we look like chumps for being shit at it.

Heinze, Ziege, Kewell, Solanke, this Stoke kid, how many times? So we've done this stuff for years, just like everyone else, yes, but we seem incredibly shit at it. Either way, it matters little, the club looks stupid for either employing someone so naive, or not being discreet enough. This on the back of years of Ayre travelling around the continent, only to see transfer after transfer fall through in the 11th hour, for reasons as stupid as tapping up evidence, to low balling clubs.

It all amounts to more of the same amateurish behaviour, that scapegoats like Parry and Ayre have taken the blame for previously. Maybe the club itself should sort it's shit out, because it's damaging in terms of this transfer and future transfers. Clubs will think they have the upper hand when dealing with us, because they know we'll fear being sanctioned.

Parry and Ayre weren't scapegoats, mark. These things happened on their respective watches and they were ultimately responsible. But I do think you have a point about the general working practices within the club, which clearly aren't up to snuff yet. Parry and Ayre failed to improve things but they weren't the only ones.

Well that was more or less my point, we're a laughing stock, again. We should be going into this Summer, back in the CL and with a great manager at the helm, attracting top class players and acting like a top class club, but instead we've got clowns running the show. This is exactly how we end up with 3rd or 4th choice players and failing to capitalise on a position of strength.
