Villareal post-game goodness

I'm still kinda in shock. I was convinced we'd concede but Villarreal had nothing but scraps to feed off.

Lovren was incredible. I know others may seem more deserving but he set the tone for the night, always in the right position and knew how to use his strengths. Finally looks like he has the makings of a top class defender. We need one

Can was ridiculous at times, he was actually everywhere all of the time like an electron. Klopp picked the right line up to score and it worked, we held our shape surprisingly well

Props to Firmino for merking Loldado that heavily though, my favourite moment of the night

When Klopp sets his first choice team up with a plan we look great. If he can transfer that to every game and each player when it seems to matter less we will win all of the stuff

I didn't think Lallana did much in the first half, apart from running about. But then, wiseness after the event is very common, with very regular revisions going on.

I even read one poster claim Firmino was "actually very good" in the first leg, which is obviously risible.

I was happy with the team he selected. It was the same as the one I would have picked
There's no way you'd have picked Firmino.

Yeah but I wouldn't haul off Lallana at HT for say Ibe, Benteke or Allen and change the way we were playing. A good few wanted him off the field.

I totally agree about the side Klopp selected. It was the exact team I wanted too.

He'd have picked Benteke.

Nah, I thought that was the strongest team we could play and liked the fact we had all of our attacking players on the pitch. I liked it, but will admit I was a bit concerned about just 2 in midfield. But not concerned enough to play Allen or Lucas, obviously.

I couldn't see a way to fit Benteke in, although I would like to see him start against Watford.

Couldn't agree more. Other than putting a great chance wide he barely touched the ball.

He more than made up for it in the 2nd half though.

To be fair, when I posted that as my line up a few days before the game, whilst labelling it Gung-ho, he did say he liked it.

You brought up the word "gung ho" - as in warning against being too gung ho - and proceeded to pick arguably the most attacking line-up possible, which is what I found amusing, while still liking the actual selection.

I was pretty pleased to see we didn't pick three CMs, although that was probably because I don't like Allen much, or Lucas at all.

At least post the tweet so we can use the translate button.

Suarez was a wonderfully gifted and combative player for us, when he left it was that fight in him that we missed the most.

I truly believe that what left with Suarez has now been replaced by Klopp himself. He's brought back that fighting spirit and instilled it in every single player. It's no longer one player leading the way, they fight for and believe in each other.

In the first couple of months or so, league form under Klopp was patchy at best. A few rival fans around me felt it necessary to point out that his league record was comparable to Rodgers' (with a failure to recognise that he had the same players!). Klopp has now taken this squad to two finals in six months (two more than in the 3.5 seasons previous), restored our name among clubs in Europe as a force to be reckoned with and made Anfield a fortress again. At this point, I couldn't give a fuck about league form as the progress is so very clear to see to me. The future is bright under this guy, we have a unifying, charismatic and die hard leader now that I'm convinced will go on to replicate (or even better) the success he had at Dortmund.

Klopp is a winner and he's taken a squad of losers and turned them into winners too. Even without a win in Basel, these past six months could well be seen as a crucial turning point for Liverpool Football Club. Some sound spending this summer and the sky is the limit.

For the record, for all the inevitable comparisons to past managers since Klopp arrived; the one he reminds me of the most is Kenny.

Woah, hang on as second.

"Restored our name among clubs in Europe as a force to be reckoned with" is a touch hyperbolic, given we haven't won anything yet, and the Europa Cup isn't exactly considered an elite competition. Seville have won it twice and been in the final three years on the bounce. They aren't really considered a European force to be reckoned with, because they never finish high enough in La Liga to qualify for the proper one.

It was actually Frogfish, and then you, just to be nice and pedantic.

I'm struggling to remember the last European visiting team to come to Anfield who were quite as cynical and unlikeable as that mob. They were absolutely pathetic.

Yeah they were a horrible and cynical throughout. Reminded me of Spurs and Chelsea, especially with Soldado on the pitch. And their managers closing comments summed them up.

Their fans are sound, though. They all descended on Concert Square yesterday before the match carrying a large 96 flag and not a hint of trouble.

Klopp doesn't remind me of any managers we've ever had. Just sayin like.

Me either. In terms of arriving with a great reputation, huge pedigree and trophies - and general fan excitement/ optimism -the only comparison is Benitez.

But as personalities they are poles apart.

Call it hyperbolic if you wish, but if we had come up against Dortmund or Villareal in the Champions League season under Rodgers; we'd have been turned over.

Dortmund were favourites for the Europa League - Liverpool outfought them. Villareal were much fancied and a real test - Liverpool outplayed them. Opinion among a lot of pundits and fans alike is that the Europa League is ours for the taking. Hyperbolic or not, that is a definite swing of opinion.

Fair enough. To be clear, I'm not saying he is Kenny incarnate (or whoever), he is very clearly Jurgen Klopp and he is his own man.

There are some similarities though with Kenny, particularly the way he is canny with the media, but the way he has brought unified everyone and brought that bit of pride back has echoes of the feeling at the beginning of Kenny's second stint. They are both clever fellas, who just "get it".
