Misconception one - You have to drink lots to be an alcoholic - Not quite. The term 'functioning alcoholic' is a dangerous one. There really is no such thing. You may be an alcoholic who holds down a good job or has a fairly good family/social life but sooner (rather than later) it will come crashing down as the addiction becomes more pronounced.
Misconception two - You're More fun on Alcohol - Yep. This is called 'Euphoric recall' Classic denial.
Misconception three - You were successful in hiding it??? This is a form of 'denial through rationaization' Sure - To that one person you may have seemed fine. An alcoholic grabs hold of that sentence and uses it to rationalize the drinking behaviour. You can be sure there were 10 other people who knew full well you were smashed.

Ok I'm defo not an alcoholic then

1. I drink loads
2. I'm defo more fun when I do
3. I don't try to hide it

Seems I can carry on fine
I believe that makes you a drunk, alcoholics go to meetings.

The AA thing gives me the fear, all that blaming god stuff. Not knocking it coz it's helped zillions of people, but it's a bit culty.

Yeah I get that. It was a big sticking point of mine for years on whether or not to go to AA or embrace the philosophies of it. I've only been to a few meetings and not once has god or religion ever came up. It it did I'd be very uncomfortable. I'm assured that a lot has moved on since 1935 when it was first written and the 'higher power' thing has evolved from that 'god stuff' to whatever 'higher power' means to you. For the most part I don't worry about it and just kick on with my recovery. 🙂

I am surprised that no one else has pointed out that, whereas any normal posters having alcohol/addiction issues would head for their local counsellor/aa meeting etc, Red just has to go all the way to Thailand for one. 🙂
Keep well fella.
