Is Alberto Moreno absolute rubbish?

Lazar's not much better, unless the opposition are going to be content letting him boot the ball into space to run after.

Imho Lazar has been pretty decent in his last few games. Has been wrongly subbed a few times and I expect big things from him next season.
The talent is there and he's probably needed that extra time to settle in.

I think/hope Markovic and Moreno will look a lot better next season after a year of settling in. They have potential. Unlike some of the utter bilge in our squad.

He wouldn't be the first full back that needed needed to be screamed at for 90 minutes at a time until he knew what he was doing.

I remember it with Sylvinho, Clichy and/or Cole at Arsenal

Really? I can't say I saw that myself, and the talent shown so far has been the barest embers. I hope you are right but as far as I can see he is more likely to be an Aquilani sized flop.

Amongst other things I don't like that he shits out of 50/50 tackles. I'm not sure you can teach someone not to do that. That's bad enough if you're a winger but as a defender it's pitiful.

He's very prone to making defensive mistakes. And going forward, I don't think he's overly spectacular either. He's very wasteful once he gets to the final third. Some of the crosses he put in are shocking.

However, he's still young, and probably deserves a chance.

I agree, to a degree, but he's got alot to do, he's not showing himself to be the subtle technically-gifted playmaker he was touted to be.

If we play him in a playmaker position (like... Behind the striker) then I think marko would do well.

Also, Moreno is a load of hoop

I thought the first half of that was about Moreno!

Moreno might learn how to defend, time is on his side, but I remember people saying the same about Johnson.

The odd thing is that, in his first game, Moreno looked full of power and pace and positivity going forward, but since then he's seemed much more reserved and cautious. I guess he was told to be more disciplined positionally and pass earlier, but it's made him seem a much less exciting and unpredictable player.

True dat. Cole in particular developed into such a good all-round fullback that it's easy to forget how iffy his defending was initially.

He is definitely a raw player with a lot of potential. Not sure if Rodgers is the right coach for him to teach the basics of defending.

That Spurs away performance is quite the opposite of what we see these days.

I wouldn't be so concerned with poor positioning and defensive lapses at this stage of his career if he was compensating with brilliance in attack. For all his pace and touch, his usage of the ball is terrible. Wasn't that our main issue with Enrique as well? Seems like we're back to square one here.

He's rubbish as a left back but in a 4-4-2 formation he'd make a decent left midfielder. Left-wing back in a 3-5-2 still leaves us too vulnerable to his defensive lapses.

On the contrary I think 3-5-2 serves him best as usually Sakho/Lovren are there to bail him out if he's bombed upfield and then can't get back in time. In a 4-4-2 he still bombs forward but without too much regard for timing and that leaves us exposed.

He's very fast, he's a good passer and tough tackler (though too naive at times). Positioning and very hit or miss crossing are the areas in most need of work. I think there's a good player in there, maybe a very good player with great coaching (if he can absorb it) but against better teams I'd rather Flanno, which says a lot I suppose. Moreno when we are doing most of the attacking and Flanno when we are on the back foot.

Enrique was a better defender than Moreno.

Quite. Enrique gets a rough deal, generally. He wasn't always tight at closing down, but he had great ability to hold players off and his forward play was miles better than Moreno's. At the minute, it's far from an "upgrade", just because he's younger and might fulfill his potential, one day.

Its an upgrade. Have you seen Enrique this season? Maybe the form of Enrique from last season would be ahead of Moreno but not this season. He's been dogshit, injured or in Dubai taking selfies.

He's looked rubbish more often than not. The signs aren't good and I can see Flanno taking his place next season without must trouble

But we weren't upgrading on what we were expecting an injured, completely out of favour player to perform like. We were upgrading on a defender who was skillful, strong, reasonably good going forward but a bit injury prone. The only thing Moreno has over him is the fact he's stayed fit. His only competition this season has been a finished English right back and a 20 year old playmaker.
