Is Alberto Moreno absolute rubbish?

I'm not writing him off btw, but right now he isn't any kind upgrade and the "time on his side"point, while holding some water, clearly doesn't mean jack shit for every player.

A lot of his issues could well be coachable - with the right coaching.

However, depending on our system next year, I'd be very tempted to do what they did to Bale and convert him to a winger. Especially if we go 4-2-3-1.

(Not suggesting for one minute that Moreno is a Bale)

I rate him and believe he will come good to us.

He's got all the physical attributes of a brilliant fullback and he's good, although inconsistent technically too. That's enough to work with. The question with Moreno is Rodgers a good enough defensive coach to improve him.

He's had some very poor games for us, but he's also had some absolutely belters and has been my Man of the Match a few times this year.

All he really has going for him is a bit of pace and that's only ever really used to bail himself or others out of the shit now and then, fair enough that can be very helpful but when do we ever see him effectively use that pace that going forward? Rarely.

He doesn't even try to beat a man 1 on 1, he does the old cowardly Downing trick of stopping and going inside for a simple lay off 19 times out of 20.

Someone mentioned he's technically good, no he isn't, far from it, having a decent touch with his left foot doesn't equate to being technically good, his right foot is honestly the most non existent foot I can ever remember a footballer having, it's a quite a big handicap to have especially when you haven't got any other redeeming qualities to your game.

His passing is average at best, his crossing is average at best, attacking wise average at best, defensively as a whole he's poor.

He's 22/23, do you go from being as poor as he is defensively at that age to a good defender? I'm not sure, especially with his one footedness.

Honestly, he was making me want Johnson back to replace him, that says it all really, he has a long way to go.

Modo using the ultimate "As bad as Downing insult"

But I think he's right.
The lad hardly ever tries to beat his man on the touchline (with his speed he's more than capable) and just passes the ball back. Which makes the 3 at the back meaningless. He's horrific in defense, and not just the positioning that can perhaps be coached into him by a coach or getting screamed at by a Carra type, but when one on one too, which although coachable, is to me based around the instinct built up through playing at an earlier age.

I think he's shite. I thought Riise was shite, but I would have Riise over Moreno any day.

He gets to the byline enough for a player who doesn't want to take on his man. He does what most wide men would do and stays on the outside and outsprints the defender to get the ball across, and he cuts in too when he needs to. I don't think that's really the issue, the main problem is that he gets in positions to provide quality but too often his cross is over or under hit, without any kind of precision. If he can work on his delivery then that's a big step in the right direction.

Do people want him to go directly at defenders and do them with a piece of skill? There are not many fullbacks around that do that, the main strengths of a good full back are decent support play with the ability to provide a good final ball, and the ability to defend and tuck into the defense when needed, to cover for a centre back who is out of position, or the opposite fullback who is also on the advance. His main strength defensively is using his pace to catch an opposition on player on the break. When asked to be part of a unit he's neither positionally aware nor aggressive and brave enough to cut danger out.

I'm expecting more from him in attack because he's complete shite at defending, plays with three CB behind him, and he's blazing quick.

He's less effective than Johnson going forward, as well as at defending. Not looking great at 23.

Yes. He's one of the most confusing players I've seen in ages. He certainly very raw, but every time I feel on the verge of dismissing him he does something that makes me think again. I suppose what worries me most is he seems a bit thick. As you say, he needs to learn a hell of a lot of lessons so he really needs to show he's capable of absorbing them.

Players like that shouldnt be in defence, though, should they ?

It was a mistake to start the season with two inexperienced fullbacks and left side is an area i'd be improving on this summer.
