Fowler v Suarez

Suarez can't finish and he isn't a particularly intelligent player either. However, when you have no other attacking options and he's your best player, then you have to rely on him. The result is 8th and 7th. It's not bad when you consider it was just Suarez and nobody else who got us there.

Now we have an intelligent player like Coutinho, Suarez is a problem even before you factor in what a cunt he has been. If he keeps hogging the ball and playing by/for himself we'll finish 7th again. It will be an utter waste of what the team might achieve with a player like Coutinho pulling the strings. Suarez is just not clever enough tactically to be world class. He's talented enough, and in a shit team he can win games by himself. But over the course of a 38 game season that's not going to get you very far.

If he is prepared to play on the left, he could be a world class wide forward for us. As the lone striker, it's time for him to fuck off and make way for others.

What the fuck are you talking about?

In Fowler's time you could reel off the best part of 100 strikers that were insanely good who would be world class in any era. The fact he wasn't in the top 10 or even 20 makes him no less of a God.

The point is, there are no more than 5 or 6 genuine world class strikers around today. Suarez playing 10 years ago wouldn't even be in the top 100.

At their best, as strikers, I think Torres is the pick of all of them. Suarez had one brilliant season and signs of brilliance the one before, so its just not enough to justify him placing over the other two.

I don't think we'll see as good finishing out of him this season if he stays, but he can be just as dangerous if the rest of our attack is more productive.

In terms of overall impact to the team, I actually think Suarez is the most influential at his best, because of his stamina and workrate off the ball. In so many ways he's been a cunt, but he's a worker on the pitch as much as he's an artist, and that's the least cunty thing about him. If he stayed and wasn't arsed to go that extra mile, we'd lose so much from him.

I wish instead there was some debate about who the best player on our team was.

Ohh I love those two goals. And he it looked embarrasingly natural for him.

I remember his first game for us away at Fulham, I was there. Horrendous downpour, treacherous pitch and he comes in and scores a half volley that was coming across him at the far post. He made it look simple and it was far from that.

As natural a finisher as Rush but with more goalscoring tricks in his locker - not to knock Rush but how many goals from outside the box? how many headers?

Rushie was always in the right place at the right time to slot it in. Robbie did that AND scored long range goals and many headers. My god he was a talent. Fowler and Collymore scored 55 goals between them in that 95/96 season and were unstoppable. If only the defence hadn't been so penetrable.

Can I respectfully disagree with that a little, Spion?

Robbie is one of my favourite players and, as Ross says at the start, a true Liverpool great. His movement was as good as Rushie but I don't think he was close in positioning. Rush always got to the spot where he would score - commentators used to go on about how "the ball always bounces for him".

He wasn't a footballer like Robbie but, for mine, the best positioning striker and best finisher I've ever seen.

Suarez is a better footballer than either, IMO. But he needs to repeat last year this season and again next season to be comparable as a goal scorer.

I don't really have much to disagree with there, not even respectfully.

Using Carragher's reasoning that the shittier the team is the greater the achievement it is to be the best player in it, it would have to be Suarez, because Rushie was playing with Barnes and Beardo and Robbie was getting plenty of service in Evans' team. Using saner reasoning, on the other hand, it's hard not to rate Rush as the best of the three because he was the most clinical.

If I had to pick a pure goalscorer then yes, it would have to be Rushie. If I were picking the best all-round footballer, Wizardry's most recent and excellent post says it all IMHO.

Where I would slightly disagree with Wizardry, Farkmaster and one or two others is over the significance (or lack of it) of the fact that Suarez has had just the one good scoring season for us so far. For me there's ample evidence from his pre-LFC career to reach an overall judgment.

For Ajax and for Uruguay.

Torres in his prime was better than Suarez. Fowler was even better than Torres.
Agree, Torres in full flight in 2007-2009 was just unbelievable sight to watch and against top top clubs in big games.
He had it all, the looks, the locks, and the LFC armband. The only tragedy was we didn't win a single trophy in that time and his ultimate betrayal. It's undoubted that Suarez is a great player but still have no idea how he compares with rest since he plays for a 7th placed time but Fowler still boss of Suarez.

Rubans, Youve been here since 2007. GET A FUCKING AVATAR YOU LAZY ONCE A FORTNIGHT POSTING BASTARD!!

I'd like to use Gerrard's endorsement of Suarez (the best he's ever played with) to argue the case against Torres, but then I remember his whatever Messi can do, Joe Cole can do corker.

I'm still lurking, actually joined in 2005 and was on Koptalk before Dunc started charging to use forums and that was only after getting reinstated twice for being banned by DJSydney.

Yes im fully aware I have neither the power or authority to do that.
But I shall stand outside SCM towers point at people and shouting "DECLINED'

For Ajax and for Uruguay.

Hmmm, Uruguay is a good point that I've probably ignored.

I find it hard to rate scoring in the Dutch league since that Chelsea striker - was it Kezman or something. Insane goal tally in Holland, got about 3 for Chelsea.
