Arsenal vs Liverpool Post Match Thread

I'm a bit disappointed the Henderson thread got locked. I read the opening post earlier today and now that I've come back to comment it's locked!

As for these post-match threads, I find that it's generally the same discussion whether we've won or lost:

- the midfield, in whichever form, is simply not fit for purpose

- the defence, whilst capable to a degree, is still not able to hold it's own without a lot of protection

- we are still set-up for the benefit of the few rather than the collective

We should simply go back to 4 at the back now Coutinho and Johnson are fit.

With Moses and Suarez wide and Coutinho in the hole.

Who said Johnson was fit? Apparently he had a serious face infection and was discharged from the hospital, but I wouldn't go so far as to say he's match ready quite yet.

Oh really?

I thought he just had a stomach bug.

I'd still go to 4 at the back and play Kelly

Lucas-Allen-Coutinho in our next match.

They can't be any worse than Gerrard-Lucas-Henderson.

In other news, I was in the Arsenal end and this is my happy face (in the hat) towards the final whistle when the Gooners where in annoyingly good voice! 😢

Lucas will probably be ok again the weekend as he'll be up against average opposition.
Gerrard will never be dropped unless injured so we can forget about him not playing.

I'd be surprised to see Coutinho not start, and if he plays him in the role he claims he's best in, then it'll be a middle 3 of Lucas, Gerrard, Coutinho.

I think he's going to be stubborn as fuck and play the 532 again, with 2 bastard useless full backs if Johnson isn't fit.

I suspect this

.........................Migs
Johnson Toure Skrtel Sakho Cissokho
..................Gerrard Lucas
.......................Coutinho
................Sturridge Suarez

So pretty much a flat back 7 against Fulham, at home.

It was noticeable that when we went 4-4-2 not only were we more enterprising but there we gaping holes at the back and we could have conceded as well as scored more. I'm quite happy with 3-5-2 (and the commentator also mentioned that he was surprised we went 4-4-2 at the Arse because he thought we played very well and were unlucky with the 1st goal). Interesting.

Have you been reading the Reserve/Youth thread ? It seems most on here, that watch them, don't rate Kelly at the moment. He has not come back well from injury seems to be the consensus.

Or indeed 3-5-2 giving us 5 in attack with 2 MFers in support. Depends which way you look at it - at home to Fulham I suspect it's 7 in attack !

Against Fulham, the way they're playing I'd want to see 10-11 of our lot attacking them.
I'd prefer he goes back to the 433/4231 and starts upsetting some people.

Shouldn't Henderson be there to cover or pick up Ramsey's run. Look at it again.

Lucas gets drawn to the ball, he should have been in that area.

However, once we he gets there Toure simply watches him tee the ball & stare at the goal for at last two seconds before hitting it, Toure didn't move an inch towards him.

If he had done the shot would have been blocked or he'd have been unsighted so much he couldn't have taken it.

Enrique and Magic need to be back soon.
Henderson should not play in the middle.
allen and alberto need to be given a chance.
Cissokho is poor, makes you think Robbo would have done better and saved us a million quid.

Now that Coutinho is back I'm sure he'll play in the hole. I don't, however, understand the reluctance to play Gerrard in that position - whether it's the manager's, the captain's or a joint decision.

Cissokho is utterly average and the only consolation I can find in playing him is that we won Big Ears with a very similarly talented left back.

I'd just like to see Lucas and Allen in front of the back 4 and Gerrard further forward - if only to stop me wondering why that wouldn't work.

Oh yeah, on the game. I thought we were a good shout. Were the better team for the first 15-20 minutes but when they scored Arsenal really played some lovely stuff.

They're a better team than I thought and could genuinely do something this season.

We played and got beat by a very good team at their place. We weren't disgraced at all and we clearly missed GlenJo in this one. Flanno tried hard but they gave him acres of space as they clearly didn't fear him and, unfortunately, he couldn't make them pay. Magic going up that side-line would have changed their set up completely.

After all that, anyone watch Spurs and the Bitters? I've seen very little of them this season but that Spurs team looked irresistible in the first half. Men against boys - but their going to regret not having a lethal striker. They create loads, dominate and press but don't have enough goals.

It underlines the importance of match-winners cause they're basically us in reverse. Better at the back, in the middle and on the edges but no more points.

I actually think Traore was a better defender than Cissokho.
He's the worst I've seen, ever, play at left back for us, I think.

He's not that bad, and he's played a few games, that's it. I'm not impressed, but at least he tries, which is more than can be said for our other garbage loanee.

As for Arsenal. I think you have to just look at the Ramsey goal to see the difference in class in midfield. Two footed, quick thinking and comfortable technically, that's a million miles away from the slow, ponderous play we see at times.

You're too kind to Dossena, Insua, Konchesky, ... geez we've had some nightmares at LB.

Ha! They'd been banished from my memory.
To be fair to Insua, he was still young and playing 1st team footy at a club like Liverpool so early didn't help him.
Dossena was shite but slightly excused for his performance vs Real Madrid.
Konchesky. Oh, Konchesky.

Really? I don't think I've seen a less inspired and less motivated player trying to create an impression.
He's a winger and never will be anything else.

Scored on his debut and always seems to try on the ball at least even played completely out of position.

He also doesn't look 100% fit either.

I'm not saying he's a world beater but I think due to not getting to play out wide for the majority of his time here he gets a bye for the moment

I'm not actually even sure about this 3-5-2 thing.

When did we last keep a clean sheet? Utd game in the league?

I don't think there's much in it this season between him and Enrique. Enrique at wing back offer zero going forwards, and he can only just about defend. Cissokho going forward offers zero and he can nearly defend also.
The best I've seen out of Enrique this season was a fantastic cross to nobody, it was a brilliant cross mind, but at wasn't to one of our players.

One thing I like about Enrique when playing with Suarez is that he very often tries to put Suarez through close to the left when he has the ball aroun the half way line.
It worked many times last season, and unfortunately this season by the time Suarez was back Enrique was carrying the knock.
I was reminded of this I'm our last game when Suarez went apeshit after making a run behind the Arsenal defence and Cissokho looked, held onto the ball then passed it back.
As infuriating as Enrique can be, he works very well with Suarez.

Bullshit, he's a fantastic defender, I agree about him going forward though.
