Adam vs Alonso

First thought is the link won't open 😉

Second thought is Xabi was better.

Third thought is Charlie won't throw a strop and fuck us off to a team of with a long standing political issue considering his background.

Just on my phone so didn't click link but isnt it unfair to use such a random snapshot to compare the two. Oh and Xabi over Chuck everyday of the week for me.

The differences between Charlie Adam and Xabi Alonso would bring the internet crashing down were they to be detailed.

Adam's ok, but let's be honest - he's not fit to lace Xabi's boots.

Nope, tenuous(broken) links to random games over a 3 year period are perfectly admissible. It's especially relevant if you are comparing the first outstanding game of a new player to a world class traitor johnny foreigner who has buggered off to a new country, and you want to sell papers.

Saying all this, the link is fucked so I've no idea if the comparison is justified...

Lets give Adam a chance - Xabi was great in the first season, then had two average/bad seasons and then had a great season and fucked off to Spain. Its difficult to make that comparison just yet considering the few games Adam has had with us. At the moment there is no comparison of course, but you should also think that there are very few players in the world who do what Xabi did for us and what he now does with Real Madrid - you know the controller who sprays the ball long and short to all players with accuracy.

The chalkboard page doesn't show Xabi's stats, so here they are:

Passes: 137
Successful: 120
Unsuccessful: 17
Assists: 0

I think those stats show that Adam's role in the team is pretty different from Alonso's - and our style of play under Kenny is quite different from the way we played under Rafa.

Adam is unfashionable, but not sure why anyone would be unhappy with his contribution so far. 3 games in, and he is scoring and creating. In fact I am certain he will score more goals this season than the 3-4 Alonso would score on average. Moron summed up his career with us pretty accurately.

PS: Before anyone has an aneurysm, yes I think Alonso was (overall) very good for us.

This.

But no doubt some fucktard will be on telling us how Adam's actually better because he scores more goals, or becaused the 6723 chances he created last season according to themostpointlessstats.com make him the most creative player in the league.

He's been decent, and he's capable of some absolute quality with his left boot. But there's stuff to his game that's concerning. Not least the almost start-stop style of play he has which might potentially be damaging for the kind of football we're looking to play. Time will tell how good he is though - he's an intelligent enough player, but he needs to get better, more economical and consistent with his retention and short passing before being even thought about being compared to Xabi.

I've been pretty impressed with Adam so far. Let's forget the Xabi comparison and take him on his own merits and flaws: I think the big problem he's got is fitness. Each game he's played, he's started well then faded. Either we need to be subbing him at the 60-minute mark or he needs to increase his stamina levels.

I prefer Adam now, because the other cunts a Madrid cunt.

I love Xabi but still I agree. Adam has started well is all that matters now.

I'm not sure what happened to the dmish I remember from 25.5.2005 ... You've lately become like Ryan - coming off as if you want our players to fail.

Fuck Alonso, he plays for Madrid and I could care less about him. He was a great servant to our club, and left us in the shitter when he left (despite 'loving our club').

Adam is here. He's been fine so far, and yes - he's not Alonso, and he has some qualities that may make him unable to lead this team to the next level but I'm behind him 100%. When he wins the league this year, we can bring this debate up again though. That's all that counts after all.

I hope Adam becomes a brilliant player for us and he will be given time, but a few hollywood balls and some set pieces doessnt make him Xabi Alonso 8)

^^^

+ Quite a few of our players have looked shagged late on in games, so hopefully it's just a case of some of our lads working up to peak fitness levels.

Both these posts.

Adam is a good footballer. Alonso was a great footballer.

Why do we need to keep these pointless comparisons going?

Adam is OK, Xabi is brilliant. The one thing Adam does bring is an excellent set piece delivery

...which hopefully will set Stevie free to be at the sharp end of corners and freekicks, where he should always have been. If Adam does nothing else (which I don't believe will be the case anyway) that in itself will be a BIG plus.

Well he"s created two goals already from such deliveries if my memory serves me right so I agree JJ

Agreed, Adam will probably never be as good as Alonso for dictating play, and controlling the tempo of a game, but he could well be better with set pieces, and he can also pick out some defence splitting balls as well as Alonso, as he proved against Bolton. He has different qualities, and if he's half the player Alonso was, we've picked up a bargain.

Alonso was able to slow the pace of the game down, make the yard of space for himself and find runners even when we were under the cosh. Does Adam have that in his locker?

Let's see as the season unfolds, but in any case I think the plan is to take the initative and not to let teams put us under the cosh wherever possible anyway.

Who cares? They are different players, Alonso has gone and is never coming back. Can we move the fuck on now please.

I like Adam, think he's made a good start and will continue to do a job for us.

It goes without saying that Alonso is a much better player of course.

I've been really impressed with Adam's passing particularly against Bolton and I think he will grow in his role in terms of really dictating play.

But he'll never be Xabi
