What's the point of Lucas?

I'm not a Lucas fan and wish he were banished to the subs bench/squad.

Today was no different to any other, his positional sense is good. He covers well for the full backs and harrasses any opposition player carrying the ball into the last third. The problem is his capacity to tackle is mediocre and he is unable to do anything accurately beyond a ten yard pass, the worse bit is that in all things he's mentally slow.

If he's mentally slow, what's Enrique?

People always are too ready to make up an excuse for him.

If we let in goals - he is not the reason we lost the game, the defense was shite.

If we don't score goals - he tackled well, he is not the reason we lost the game our attack was shite.

It's as if people think it's clever to rate him. It somehow makes it appear like you are well learned about the art of football because you know how to appreciate such a totally pointless footballer.

I don't think it's 'clever to rate him', I just think it's obvious that he is a good footballer, capable of being brilliant, has a tremendous attitude and is a likeable chap.

Remember when he was injured and Ross pointed out it will take a year to 18 months for him to get back to his best?

Did Everton win? Did Everton score?
It's not Lucas fault that our attackers were so inept in front of goal today.

So you mean to say that the concept of a team is a myth and basically it's just 11 individuals or a number of siloed units that have no bearing on each others performances?

Wow. Ross could only dream of crushing conventional wisdom with such a devastating blow.

Eh, I thought he did well defensively today. His passing was poor though.

Before his injury, he seemed to have turned a corner. But since he came back, he's gone back to being very average. I honestly don't think we'd miss him if we sold him.

Yes and no. Lucas main priority is to protect the defence imo, which he did. Everton barely hurt us through the middle. He's tactically disciplined and very intelligent.
There wasn't much of a difference between his performance against the Blues and the Barcodes last week and we managed to score 6 then.
So bringing up Lucas passing and tackling after a 0-0 draw is just lazy and a bit tedious.
Look elsewhere. Maybe at the right wing.

He has no discernible tackling technique. He arrives at the scene of the play, usually after the ball has gone, and runs into people so that everyone collapses in a heap. 70% of the time it's a foul, usually in a dangerous position. The rest of the time the opposing forward gesticulates to the ref that it should have been a foul (and he's usually right), one of our other players will run off with the ball and Lucas gets the credit for breaking the play up. Amazing play.
He intercepts the odd pass but, standing on a pitch that size with 21 other men, it would be a statistical miracle if he didn't. Most other professional footballers with the same remit would pull this off.
He runs like a 14 year old girl who has poo'd herself. Only slower.
His attacking prowess (which he was bought for don't forget) is zero. In fact, it's negative, as he cocks our breaks up.
90% of his attempted passes are 10 metres sideways or back to the bloke who passed it to him. Where he does attempt a forward pass, it has to be one that is telegraphed e.g. he is running up to the ball unopposed and can see a bloke stood on his own further up-field. His on-the-ball nous is useless; he can only do the obvious.

Other the years, I have read on here (1) he is better than Alonso, (2) he is better than Mascherano & (3) he is World class. All complete horseshit. If we sold Lucas he wouldn't be on the Mardid/Barca radar, like those 2. He would be off to Lecce or Oviedo or some other mid-table team of part-time hairdressers.

He is a nice fella, I'll give you that one. But so was the bloke who did our gutters last week and I don't want him in the team either.

He's average, limited, and will never be good enough, in the same way that Carra and Kuyt were.

For me - replacing Carragher is the priority, followed by an attacking player in the Coutinho mold, but with a right side preference.

After that a DM, another CB & a LB.

This is based on us not selling anyone, buttoning put some of the youngsters.

The right wing? Jesus.

After 20mins or so, Sky flashed up a stat that said 38% of the play was in our half. And that was a problem throughout. The passing was poor and we failed to really give the attack a proper platform.

That doesn't excuse players like Sturridge who was awful, Downing who was ineffectual etc., but you have to look at the whole picture.

Anybody else bored with this constant complaining about Lucas?

He's less than sparkling, among many others on the day but let's highlight his faults and ignore the rest.

Plenty of end of term performances out there against a side determined to spoil.

He's been piss poor for most of the season. There's only so long that we can acknowledge injury etc really. He's had an indifferent career culminating in some excellent form last year, but his career so far has been decisively patchy. Same with Johnson and Enrique too, I wouldn't be surprised if we look at all three positions in the Summer because none of them are consistent enough. Enrique just about gets a reprieve but he's still someway short of the standard we should be aspiring to.

Enrique was poor but he seemed to be trying at least and it's come to something when your team is basically reliant on brute force running by someone like Enrique anyways.

Is he worth what we paid for him?
Valid point (I think you're making a point rather than actually enquiring), I don't rate him and don't want him in the team but I suppose, compared to the likes of Carroll, Downing, Konchesky etc, we got reasonable value for money.

I used to say that I wouldn't mind him as a squad player but seeing as how I can't trust our various managers to stop picking him in the first 11 I'd much rather we sold him.

Seems he was asked to keep Fellaini and Pienaar quiet, and from what I could see he did his job well, apart from - correct me if I'm wrong - one silly free kick.

If you want to start a thread on someone, it should have been Johnson. He has been terrible the last 6 odd games.

If he was asked to keep a pair of evertoss players quiet it's because that's the absolute limit of his ability. It's not like they could have asked him to actually play football.

Yeah, you're right, Lucas can't play football. Amazing how someone on the internet can see that, but 4 Liverpool managers can't. Crazy huh?

Did you see what happened to us when he was injured or dropped for that matter?

Four Liverpool managers who've led us to sixth and seventh while playing him
