Virgiling on the vandijkulous

If we were after Semedo, the general stance would be: "why are we competing for the players the likes of Newcastle and Lille are after. We should be aiming higher than that".

The injury is the only concern. He's shown that he's good enough, best CB in the league since he arrived.

The fee is totally irrelevant, the reality is the club have their targets in mind already and they've budgeted the requisite fees. If we are looking for a CB, CM, WF and ST (for example) - then the money is already there for (the club's) top targets; a willingness to pay the Van Dijk fee looks like it falls within the budget allocated for that position anyway.

I'm glad we seem to be moving on from the endless stop-gap signings we used to churn out under Benitez etc. Klopp's turning us into a DFS showroom, wall-to-wall sofas; no excuses!

Didn't we buy Tiago Illori from them?

Didn't he look epic on youtube?

Indeed. Havent seen Semedo at all, and he might be a very good player but...
I'm not sure we are in a position were we can gamble on a player that has only played one full season of first team football, like some of these other clubs like Soton, Lille, Newcastle etc. Depends on what you're looking for I guess. Key player or rotation/back up.
He's playing next to Coates at Sporting. The very same Coates that didnt do to much for us either, which might tell you a bit about the level of the Portuguese league.

Sporting wants, according to A Bola, a 50% sell on fee and a 30 mill euro compensation if Semedo is sold back to a Portuguese club.

Was kewell the decent / in demand player we signed over rival’s I can’t recall which other clubs top clubs were after milner at the time.

Bar the injury he's been struggling with now, his injury record is very good:

And whats the prognosis on the present injury which you keep innacurately referring to as an ankle injury ?

Is it true that half of athletes never get back to their peak after the injury ?

Great, this is going to be a long saga. This will either fall through, or we'll end up paying 60 million plus.

Southampton will report Liverpool to the Premier League over an illegal approach for centre-back Virgil van Dijk, reports BBC Radio Solent.
The 25-year-old reportedly wants to move to Anfield if he leaves St Mary's.
The £50m-rated Netherlands defender signed a new six-year contract last year, having joined Southampton from Celtic for £13m in September 2015.
Liverpool refused to comment on renewed speculation linking them with Van Dijk on Monday.

Pathetic. It's rank hypocrisy. Arsenal have a cosy chat with Suarez and his agent and merely get a brief tweet of displeasure from FSG. Barca routinely tap up our players via regular media interviews and nothing happens. Gerrard was invited on to Abramovich's bloody yacht for transfer talk long before he handed in his request and nothing happened. It's ridiculous that we seem to be the club that gets reported. I guess no one ever gets contacted by Southampton before they make a formal offer.

The Southern Daily Echo further speculate that “the furore is also believed to have redoubled Saints’ determination to keep van Dijk, and rule out the possibility of selling the Dutch defender to Liverpool.”

Enter Man City or Chelsea with a £60m bid.

It seems Southampton would prefer VVD not to have made up his mind so they could profit from continuing speculation.

Could you provide a link to where it says that he has had a lisfranc injury/procedure?
Cant find that anywhere.

The "ankle" injury was going by all the media reports, which have been referring to an ankle injury.

This is from the Soton official site, so thats now corrected on my part:

Claude Puel explained at his press conference today: “It’s a long injury and we will see if he comes back before the end of the season. It’s a long injury for him."

Van Dijk damaged a ligament in the sole of his foot during the victory over the Foxes and required surgery as a result. Although the procedure was relatively routine, the placement of the injury means that it takes some time to heal.

I've got no idea about his prognosis about returning to his peak as a) I'm not his doctor and b) I didnt perform the surgery c) I've got no idea about what type of procedure he's been through and havent got any experience or knowledge about that.
You arent or havent got that either, so its all guesswork from your end.

If we decide to go through with this transfer it would be quite stupid to think that this isnt one of the things we've looked at before spending 45 + million £.

They got to be kidding. I am sure they use us as bait for attrackting players in the first place. "Look son, signing for us and play well is a safe rout to playing for Liverpool... Hell, you don't even have to play particular well!"

Van Dijk missed the final five months of the season after sustaining an ankle injury following a challenge by Leicester City's Jamie Vardy in Southampton's 3-0 win at St Mary's on 22 January.

The BBC are reporting it as an ankle injury as well. Report them!
