The hype machine

Name a player you don't get the hype around. Someone who seems universally acknowledged as a good/great player, but you just think "really?"

For me Jack Wilshire. He's tidy, not the best passer, not the best finisher, not the best vision, but he's seen as the next midfield stalwart for England.

Either I'm missing something or there's a dearth of talent in English midfield

And to stop this thread turning in to a flame war, NO LIVERPOOL PLAYERS

Does Andy Carroll still count as hyped? I never got the fuss about him. For years people were saying he was more than just a target man, he had so much more to his game.

I just never saw it. He's exactly what he looked like. A big clumsy immobile lump, who scores a great header about one game in 10 and a thunderbolt shot about one game in 20. That was fucking it.

Sergio Ramos has to be one of the most overrated footballers ever, i really don't get the hype. Balotelli as well.

Cavani

Edit: Checked out his stats and they are pretty good tbf, he must have just been utter dung in the 5 or so games I saw him in.

Not sure if he can be classed as good, he's certainly overrated. Welbeck.
I've heard scum fans comparing him to Sturridge. This season.

Welbeck.... Sturridge.... This season.

Piqué also. Good player, but way overhyped.

Yea Rooney doesn't deserve his hype, has he gotten any better since 2004 for England? His good performances for his club have been less regular too as time has gone on. A couple of good games or goals and people forget he's been shit for a couple of months. He does play well in spells and influence games but I don't think I've seen him be unplayable or really dominate a game since he was a youngster.

United fans seem to think Wellbeck is awesome too for some reason, I don't get that at all. Hard working and I've seen a few decent finishes but I wouldn't say he's anywhere near Sturridge (I seen a thread comparing the two on redcafe)

I didn't get the love for Andros Townsend either when it was in full flow... runnnnnnn and shoot!

Townsend is a great shout.

A mate of mine was over the moon months ago that they'd had Bale's replacement all along.
Greedy little shite so he is.

Some of those called for sure but I'd add Neymar, I see him as perhaps the Brazillian Rooney.

I can see Neymar living up to it in the future, but yea as of now he is overhyped.

I never got how Carrick is so highly rated, good player, no doubt, but overrated.
I've never seen Pogba have a better than good game, but everyone seems to be creaming over him.

Yea, they jumped on that a bit too soon. He could yet be decent if he learns to pass but he's definitely no Gareth Bale.

Agreed. Hopefully the hype doesn't hinder Sterlings minutes in Brazil though, Raheem deserves to start every game.

Wilshere is a good shout. He is constantly lauded as a major talent and whilst he does look a good player I haven't seen any evidence to suggest he'll be some kind of superstar. Injuries have played their part though.

And much like Rooney / Ronaldo at Utd, Wilshere appears to now be in Ramsay's shadow a little bit.

Koscielny

I'd have agreed with that until last season, but Mertesacker's brought him on a ton.

Rodriguez for me. Maybe it's because we're not exactly awash with good English strikers at the moment, but I've never been able to see why he gets as much praise as he does. I've never seen him play better than meh.

Agree about Andros Townsend.

To a lesser degree Adam Lallana. I just realised that we bought Luis Garcia like £6-7 million and he was about Lallana's age as well.

There may be a degree of hyperbole but I think he's already excellent and will become even better.

Absolutely a great talent, but I think he's still a fair bit away from truly realizing it. Farther away than many would like to believe, even.

Robin Van Persie for me, he's had 2 good goalscoring seasons yet they say he's the best finisher in the world... fuck off. Doesn't help I think he's a complete knob head.
Actually one that trumps all these suggested David Luiz!

Balotelli and Ribery for me.

Bang average but with high profile images (albeit very different ones!) which gets them more attention than they warrant
