Pre Match Pre Match - Newcastle (Anfield South) - Sun 16:30

The 120 mins on Tuesday means nothing on Sunday. It’s a non argument for any change whatsoever.

By that reckoning, Szobo, Jota and Elliott all have more or less the same assists to minutes ratio, Szobo's is a bit better than 1 every 500 minutes. Nunez's is better again. There's not much in it really other than to say Nunez's return is better than any of the others, but he's also arguably been the more advanced and on the front foot too, if we consider that Jota drops in and helps the midfield more and the rest are well, midfielders. It doesn't really prove anything either way. Jones' ratio is better than Szobo's, but you wouldn't have him in there ahead of Szobo, would you?
I think your maths is off there mate! Bar Jones they are near enough double mins!

Nunez 1 per 264 mins
Jones 1 per 310 mins
Gakpo 1 per 429 mins
Szobo 1 per 466 mins
Jota 1 pet 475 mins
Diaz 1 per 542 mins
Elliott 1 per 567 mins

Of course we need to look at other factors too but I was pointing out assists. Though if we are talking about defensive actions I think Nunez would beat the pants off Jota there too.

Our anticipated greater possession is however why I suggested I'd start Diaz or Jota at CF for this game.

We start the team that has brought us success so far this season, and this isn't the time to experiment.

Kelleher (ideally Alisson, but we usually go with the back up in the Carabao cup)
Quansah Konate Virgil Robbo
Macca Gravy
Salah Szobo Diaz
Jota

Darwin, Elliott and Gakpo to come off the bench.

Last year I flew in to Stansted early, met a mate for coffee by Tower Bridge, had a leisurely walk along the south bank of the Thames, then we went to Baker Street and met up with a crowd for breakfast & pints. Me & another lad got the tube up to Harrow to meet the lads coming down from Liverpool, had a few pints there & then got the tube into Wembley for the match, nicely bevvied.

This year most of the lads didn't get tickets - the one other who did is flying in from US, and we are meeting up for an Indian at 12 noon - that's a very new experience for me, not sure how I will deal with a dose of the wildies in Wembley ... and now I have to kill 2-3 hours in London Sunday morning.

He is essential to the way we play, but equally he's nowhere near the level a 70m attacking mid should be when it comes to goals and assists. It's been said numerous times (arguably in jest), but he is the Hungarian Hendo, just less vocal.

Thats just such a very bad comparison. They don't even play in the same position. Szobo is only 24 as well.

And we paid 60 mill.

He’s nothing like Hendo?

Hendo RCM, Szob RAM.

You're right, different positions. Yet Hendo is only slightly behind szob in g&a when comparing his title winning season to szobs. Szob is well off his xG and xGA. Hendo his his xg & xGA.

Yes, szob progresses with the ball but does fuck all with it. What's the difference between captain sideways and captain "run 30 yards forward to pass it backwards"

We can't continually praise szob for his work rate and pressing and then moan when he's compared to Henderson.

I like szob, I think he'll be an excellent addition....but for £66m (€70m) is it wrong to expect more from the attacking midfielder? Even slots said it.

Nah, check their positions throughout their careers and when playing for us. Its a bad comparison.

Szobo is a young player coming into his prime and performing much better this season then his first. Progression.
The goals and assists will continue to come as he develops.

I dont really like it when people compare a player that has been in the league for 1 year and is in his 2nd season to another who had a different entry point to his Liverpool career anyway.

I'm less confident szob will kick on in an attacking sense as you, primarily because coming to us ruined his numbers, so I'll assume it's a klopp/slot tactical thing.

He's still a very promising player; a promising player sacrificing himself for the system

Reminds me of another league cup final in the 90s (Bolton I think), On the drive back to Liverpool, one of the lads who was a bit worse for wear thought he was very clever puking into a plastic bag - only to find out there was a big hole ripped in the bottom & he covered his shoes 🙂

Re: the Indian - double dose on Imodium. Save the explosions for later.

I think it's taking him a while to find his feet in the system but I do think he'll kick on. As the season has gone on it's become more obvious who has benefitted from the changes Slot has put in place (Gravenberch, Macca, Gakpo etc) and who hasn't.

As said regarding tired legs:

Slot: “In the end, it is normal the players are tired in extra time, especially when it is so intense. I made five changes, so five can't be tired, I don't think that is why PSG was better in the last half hour… 4 days in between so the players can play Sunday again."

If you’ve nothing better to do and want to grab a coffee/beer Sunday morning drop me msg. Getting you a coffee/beer is the least I can do for being able to have your Madrid ticket earlier this season!

He is, but PSG rested their team at the weekend, and Elliott and Jones weren't at their best so the stat is exaggerated. It wasn't a huge shock they seized control in ET.

True, to some extent. Its already been discussed that they looked much more fit with them having rested 9-10 players during the weekend.
But the stat is from 106 mins. We lost all control in the 2nd half of ET. Not only fitness but we lost our shape as well.

Tiredness and 5 changes of personnel will do that.

PSG being able to rest their whole team because they play in a shit league is definitely an advantage no matter how you want to spin it.

I hope Macca takes all corners, they were much more threatening than usual against PSG. Quansah in there will be great too.

Big midfield battle against Bruno G, Tonali and Joelinton.i wonder if Howe will send them out to play football or to try and deploy their shit house dark arts tactics from the start.

Yes, said as much in the match thread.

This is why I think we need to start with 4 midfielders. Gravy, Macca, Jones & Szobo.

To be honest we were playing Southampton at Anfield, we had a large lead at the top. We should've been able to rest the vast majority of our team as well.
