Post Match Reflections

I can't believe some of the shite I'm reading in this thread.

Southampton were fucking boss. I really think they'll be challenging for shit. They shocked me with how good they were. Delighted with 3 points...3 more than last year.

Henderson was man of the match, by a stretch. And you know how horrible about him I've been in the past. Lucas and Johnson were bad, but not bad enough that they would have cost us beating most teams on most days.

Southampton were fucking boss.

Am I repeating myself?

Delighted with 3 points.

Oh, again.

As bad as Gerrard and Lucas played I almost think Rodgers picked Lucas with one eye on shutting out Man City next week. Lucas hasn't played much in preseason and most people wouldn't have had him in the team today.

Just a theory on a bit of a mad team selection.

He had his other eye on shutting out Southampton today but it failed miserably and we were all over the place on many occasions, only the result saved it from being a complete fuck up, apparently Lucas didn't make one successful tackle today.

Lucas has always been shit. End of.

The odd good game once in every ten kept his fan boys fighting his corner, but nope, just shit. So so shit.

Gerrard and Lucas were both shit.
Id like to see Henderson and one of Allen/Can in the middle with Coutinho in the hole and Sterling Lallana/Markovic wide (once all are fit)
I really genuinely wouldnt have Gerrard or Lucas in my first 11 anymore.
Too slow, too ponderous.
Its time for a change in there.

Can the man.

I'm beginning to think this is it for Gerrard now too. God that sounds kneejerk and I don't mean he's shit, but I think it might be better to start building with other players now. Can, Henderson, Lallana would probably be my three.

Really pleased with the 3 points, was always going to be a tight game.
We're still short of Moreno, Lazar, the llama, all of who would have helped with the attacking aspect of our game today. And possibly another striker coming in.
Overall, I thought our defence looked better today, would have been nice to get a clean sheet.

Any three from Can, Henderson, Lallana and Allen really. I think Allen's all right as a backup DM.

Lovren with nearly 96% passing accuracy and 4 interceptions. What a signing this lad will be. Our defence will improve a lot.

Ward Prowse was excellent. That kid will be a star.
About time someone mentioned him in this thread. He was electric. I was so worried about our performance today and then I realised it was the first game of the season and we were up against a very talented Southampton side spearheaded by a good manager. I was fucking delighted we managed to get 3 points today and something tells me this result will go a long way to determining our finishing position this season.

I'm fine with one of Gerrard OR Lucas. But playing both is suicide against Man City, there's nowhere near enough energy with that midfield.

Fernando/Fernandinho/Yaya would/will just run all over us.

Just to add, without sounding hyperbolic, I think the saints will cause a lot of problems for our rivals this season. Regardless of their selling policy.

Not hyperbolic at all. They looked really good under Koeman. He watched our Dortmund game and clearly set out to neutralize our tactics/personnel from that game, namely putting Tadic on Manquillo and double-teaming Coutinho.

We will face these teams all year playing 8 deep and breaking on us. Southampton played us perfectly to nuetralise our strengths so its a result that we broke them down.
We could be having a lot of nerve jangling tough days this year. Every win will be hard fought. No team will come all out against us because they know we can kill them off.

Except Arsenal, Barca, Real Madrid, & whatever team the kids play in the FA cup from division 3.

We'll beat them all like.

They controlled the game the whole second half. It wasn't remotely a matter of us being frustrated. They were great and we were shit, that was the problem today.

They did indeed Mr. Hague. But the bit that was strange about that game was that when we made the subs and started pushing for the second goal - you just knew we were going to get that goal - it was a noticeable step up in gear from us and at that point Southampton did not appear to deal with our intensity. Then after we scored we turned sh*t again taking terrible risks. Just don't get that.

That was a real head doer, just like last season, fuck knows why we can't get organised when we need to see out the last 5/10 minutes of a game, there were still gaping holes in the middle of the pitch at times after we scored the 2nd, that is criminal really.

Hmmm I didnt think I said we were frustrated. I said in that post and the last that they played well and did a number on us.
*shrug*

That's what I was replying to.

Spot on. Re Johnson - the amount of aggro he gets is criminal - the usual lot almost seem pleased and vindicated by any mistakes. At the end of the day he's a red.

Yeah, not what you said then. Thats what I thought.

FFS I can't believe you're going to try and pursue this argument. I said you said Soton frustrated us. Specifically, I was referring to you saying that we were unable to break them down and that by 'these teams' playing 8 at the back you included Soton themselves in that. That's what 'these' means in that context, surely. If I'm right in thinking that, then surely that's also a description of a team that sets out to frustrate. Which is what I said you said.
