Philippe Coutinho

Well Inter have agreed a fee for Belhanda (gutted) for 14m euros. Don't see why we didn't go for Belhanda instead of coutinho as he's the better player. but either way that must mean that inter are willing to sell Coutinho to whoever....hopefully us.

Why the fuck would anyone want to move to Southampton - unless it involves wadges of cash or extreme sexual favours.
he managed him at espanyol so coutinho knows him well and was saying how he wanted to stay at espanyol.

BREAKING: Ian Ayre has now landed in Italy and has been spotted making his way to Inter Milan

I wouldn't call that an accurate comparision. More likely a tv for a £1000 but wanting the one for £1500.

But either way there's no way you're telling me we can't afford the extra £2m. And if he fulfills his potential then its more than a worthwhile investment.

I was guilty of thinking this way before. But now i'm in agreement that we should only pay what we feel is right. If we only value him at 8 or 9 million then we should only be willing to pay that much. If its not accepted then we move on to someone else.

You're completely missing the point. Macca is usually spot on with his info. He may have heard something but is not at liberty to speak. An affirmative will be good enough.

I'm with neil. I think when someone prefixes something with "I don't know who this is", it's a pretty good indicator that they are unable to offer any kind of guarantee about its credibility.

Then we'll just end up with players that no one wants. I agree that you should have a price but believe you should also be flexible. If we were willing to spend £8m and they wanted £15m then yeah you walk. but if the fee is a matter of 1 or 2m then it comes down to how much you want the player. I personally fee his talent is worth that extra £2m.

If he chooses to play for Southampton ahead of Inter (where he's happy) or Liverpool then you can add mentally retarded to wadges of cash & sexual favours.

His is a perfectly accurate comparison, paying 25% more for something.

But if what we feel is right, which is the limit of what we're prepared to pay for a player, is the opening bid - then we aren't very good at this negotiating thing.

i just wana get someone else in so i want this to go through, saying that i'd be equally happy if it's somebody else that i've never heard of, as long as its not someone i know thats shit im not too arsed

I think this has been our transfer policy for the last 10 years (Kenny's signings notwithstanding). Not sure it's working, to be honest.

No it's more like paying 350 for a tv didn't work, paying 200 for another one that didn't work, and then thinking you can only afford 80 for the next one, and refusing to pay 120 in case it doesn't work.

I couldn't disagree more. This lad is 20 years old and full of potential. He could easily be a star for the next 10 years - that works out at an exra £200k a year.

If we refuse to do the deal because of a couple of million then we're looking at another disaster like the failed Alves transfer of 2006.

That's like me having £200k to buy a house and saying sod it I'll buy one for £250k even though I haven't got the cash. It's living within your means.

No.... It's like you saying I have enough money to buy a house around about £200k - I might go a little bit more if I find the right house - but having been burnt in the property market before I'm being cautious.

Obviously if we get him he'll be mediocre. If he goes to Southampton he'll be great and we'll be looking to pick him up for £25m in a year and a half.

Always the way.

At a club like Southampton he'll get the games and time he needs to develop - which he hasn't always gotten at Inter and might not get at Liverpool. Given that he's only 20 there will be opportunities for a big move later on in his career.

If I was him playing time would be the major factor in my decision.

He'll get game time with us if he can operate effectively in wide areas.

You've also got to factor in what he might learn from playing alongside some good players.

Add in that we're clearly building a young squad with the hope that we can keep them together and develop them as a unit over the next while.

And we're playing - or trying to play - an expansive game.

And we won't be in the middle of a relegation battle.

.... and it's still fucking Southampton - where as long as they're above Portsmouth, it's fine.

Well we don't actually know what our budget is do we ? Obviously we are not going to jump straight in with 15M (if that's our max for example) and we're going to try to get him for as little as possible. It depends on what we value him at and what our real budget for him is.

Dani Alves comes to mind ...... we refused to pay the 12M they wanted instead of the 10M we had offered, and within 2 years he was worth 30M+.

Yeah, but for every Alves there's a dozen examples of players that we didn't buy that didn't increase in value or that we did buy and decreased in value.
