Missed the match as I was at a lecture from an Apollo astronaut, so just watched he highlights posted above. My biggest quesiton - what was the referee wearing????

In defense of Mignolet, sort of. Yes, he made a very rash decision to come out from his line, but imagine what was going through his mind at the moment he saw the through ball coming in his direction. This is his first ever CL game, it's 1:0 in the 91st minute, the defenders seem to be late to catch up with the striker – it's a very human impulse to try to resolve the situation decisively and cleanly. It would take more thinking, accurate calculation of risks or experience to stay on the line, allow the striker to receive the ball and live with a 20-30% chance than his shot will be impossible to save.

Like I said, in retrospect it was a completely wrong decision and we would most likely not have conceded there had Mignolet stayed on his line. But it's an understandable error. Field players let emotions and pressure get better of them all the time; goalkeepers are human too. Let's hope Mignolet learns from this and gets better at judging the risk under pressure. Some players never learn, but Mignolet seems coachable. Let's hope the fact that he and the rest of the team got bailed out by the 93rd minute penalty is a good omen.

Lallana was bounding around like a Labrador last night, looked hapless at times, hoping it'll click for him.

I was there last night and wathcing the various players without the ball and Gerrard is coming too deep and constantly splitting the centre backs for no reason. I thought the full backs played well but it's a good job they're pacey to get themselves out of trouble. Henderson was the best player on the pitch for, he's everywhere always showing for the ball and being positive. Lalana was poor first half but improved second, doesn't look fit tho. You could see that Mario was getting frustrated but he was still trying all game. At one point it looked like Gerrard was going for Mignolet and had to be pulled back by Sakho.

Steven Gerrard has told Liverpool that they “have a lot to learn” after his late penalty prevented their return to the Champions League from falling flat and earned a dramatic victory over Ludogorets which Brendan Rodgers, the manager, admitted owed more to resilience than brilliance.

Gerrard struck in the 93rd minute after Javier Manquillo had been brought down by Milan Borjan, the Ludogorets goalkeeper. Before the midfielder’s intervention, Liverpool had looked set to drop two points after Dani Abalo, the substitute, had cancelled out Mario Balotelli’s first goal for his new club with an equaliser in the final minute of normal time.

Rodgers believes the significance of the win will extend beyond the three points that it earned Liverpool in their first Champions League fixture for five years but, like his manager, Gerrard acknowledged that improvements are necessary if they are to build on the victory in European and domestic competition.

“It is always nice to win the game, especially when you think you are going to drop two points,” the Liverpool captain said. “We have got a lot to learn. They caused us a few problems, especially on the counter-attack in the same way as Aston Villa did at the weekend. If we win against Basle, we are going to be in a great position, but we have still got a lot of work to do.”

With Basle losing 5-1 against Real Madrid, Liverpool will move into a strong position in Group B if they can defeat the Swiss champions in their next outing. That made last night’s win particularly crucial and Rodgers readily admitted that it came despite his team being some short of their best after a loss to Villa on Saturday.

“It was a vital win for us, vital. It will be really important for our season,” Rodgers said. “We started the season okay but, after a great performance against Tottenham, the break has really hurt us, so we came back and got a negative result against Villa.

“I felt coming into the game that we had a wee bit of a hangover from that defeat, so the resilience and commitment the players showed tonight was really important for us. I do believe that in my first six months here we would have lost that game.”

A bit too defensive at the end there from BR. I still don't see why his first six months are relevant now, seeing as, surely, the more apposite comparison is with last season.

Mignolet is fucking garbage.

I thought Lallana and Countinho where poor. The former is either because he is unfit or he is out of his depth, I hope it is the former. Coutinho seems to be trying too hard to make things happen instead of letting things happen, maybe he is feeling the pressure of the new players arriving.

I agree with those saying we should have 2 up top with a diamond behind we do look at lot better.

Thanks to Lippy, Spion, Sheik and Count for ticket, lift, parking and company respectively.
Love those boys

Good to catch up with you and John even if it was only for a quick chat.
Still can't believe you are the one that likes doughnuts 😉

back in the champions league, feels good. I was in the kop end and thought the atmosphere was fantastic, seemed like there wasn't more than a minute without singing, other fans seemed to think the atmosphere was a bit shite though so maybe it was just where I was sat. Haven't watched the game on tv yet but we just looked toothless, none of the players ran into space when we had the ball, mario was probably the worst for this, when one little lad asked his auld fella why mario wasnt even looking at the ball as moreno was bombing up the wing and he was casually jogging aimlessly into the box his dad could only come up with the half arsed lie of "er, cause he doesnt need to". Coutinho was wasteful but there no one was making runs for him which is why he kept tryna take players on.

Something needs to change at the back, probably the keeper so we can have a bit of organisation.

Ludo looked pretty good, quick, technically good, our pressing actually fell into their hands, if they had been a bit better with their finishing it could have been embarrassing.

Having said that we won, I nearly had a heart attack, and it was fucking boss.

I didn't mind Coutinho trying to take players on. It was his brainless attempts to stab the ball through to no one in particular that drove me crazy. It's a crucial time for him: no more excuses, no more hype, no more indulgence - he has the talent, now he needs to show he can use it intelligently. If he's the brains in the team, we've been lobotomised.

i dont think he has the right to play as the number 10 anymore with sterling out wide, if anything he should be competing with markovic (and suso?) for the wing

I must be the only one who's still not convinced that Sterling should play as the number 10 (at least in a one striker formation). Not that he can, because he clearly can, but just that he should. There's no shame in playing wide. IMO it's where he'll get most chances to isolate defenders and really open teams up with his pace and skill. I think he can do just as good a job at 10 but the problem is that all our other options can't play the wing nearly as well as he can.

Under normal conditions (I don't buy that Coutinho is currently performing at anything like his normal level right now, whatever the reasons) Coutinho should be the number 10, or Lallana.

[article]He added: "I said to Mario Balotelli at halftime that he needs to get in the box more. I said to him: 'Make sure you're penalty spot in, rather than penalty box out' because he tends to hang back for the cut-back.[/article]

I heard some audio of Danny Murphy's co-commentary for Talksport earlier.

He had a bee in his bonnet about Balotelli not showing the crowd respect at full-time.

He was really wound-up about it.

Did anyone that was there notice this?

I only noticed about four or five players turning to the four corners of the ground and acknowledging the support.
That doesn't mean that others didn't.
Danny's not too keen on foreign players though, is he?

What did piss me off though was the fact that YNWA was played about five minutes before kickoff and before the sides came out on the pitch to facilitate the Champions League music.
Was this done previously?
Wrong in my view.

He said Sturridge should stop moaning the other day re: his injury.

Maybe he just hates our strikers?

Our goalkeeping coach must be shit. Every keeper we get progressively worsens.

This. So much this. Achtenberg cant be the best goalkeeping coach we can get. We're stuck in the '90s and goalkeepers are one of the areas were we arent progressing at all.

Chris Woods is available for free now. Get him. Or Eric Steele from Derby.
Look at Chelsea and Utds goalkeeping coaches. We're not even close to that.

Well, he sounded very anti-foreign, or at least pro-English, when discussing managers after Ged left. He was very vocal in urging the club to go for someone like Curbishley, and then when at Spurs was eager to say how great it was to be with English coaches again. I did express some regret about it at the time, only to incur the full force of Brendan's ire for my pains. I was close to being headwanded.

How wound up are you that Eva Mendes has dropped a sprog and it isn't yours? 😉
