I think while Allen is injured, Lallana could do a good job next to hendo and ahead of Gerrard.

Sterling behind a front 2

It's when we have the ball that gerrard is annoying me,keeps dropping deep between cbs and picks ball up too deep, the dreaded "quarter back" shite,he should be 10-15 yards further forward receiving the ball,in turn that would push us up the field further, and let Allan or coutinho affect game in right areas

Agreed. I'd like to see that. Balotelli and Borini can start whilst Sturridge is out.

I'm not that keen on Brendan's comments after this. One, he said 'maybe in the first six months we'd have drawn or lost that'. I presume by that he means in HIS first months, which means very little seeing how the side played last season. It's pointless harking back to the season before that. Then he said there are a few new players who'll take time to gel - well, he countered the earlier 'are your summer transfers risking a Spurs scenario' questions by stressing that most signings were for the future and the side would be pretty much settled, so he can't have it both ways. But that's PR; I'm sure he's well aware of what needs doing.

Can we talk about our naïvety? 1 - 0 up, looking shakey all game and yet, we're still loose at the back. Moreno, great game that he had, but why the fuck is he bombing down the left with a few minutes to go? He was running next to Sterling when Sterling got dispossessed and they went down the other end and scored. Completely left us open.
It's was like fucking Crystal Palace all over again. Sure, we can blame defenders but Rodgers needs to take some responsibility here and make sure we keep it fucking compact and tight at the back instead of continuing pushing forward and giving chances to the opposition like that?

Agreed, though in fairness to Rodgers he does have Skrtel, Allen, Sturridge and Johnson injured at the moment who, if fit, might all have been starting in what could be described as a more settled side.

I agree with this but I REFUSE to acknowledge your comment on Moreno

He's the sexy god

Yes. Naivety. Quite right. And Rodgers' philosophy is so rooted in the Spanish style of play - pass, pass, pass, patience, think, pass, wait for the opening. So the restlessness suggests the team just isn't listening to him. They did last season and they will again, but this early stage in the season is full of needless anxiety. Plan B should simply be: keep the ball. If you can't get an early breakthrough, don't lose the ball. Instead we get Coutinho practically giving the ball away like it's covered in anthrax, and other players resorting to wild crosses into the box when none of our players, save maybe Mario, are good at attacking crosses.

Painful viewing that was. At least we got the win anyhow.

Some real concerns though and they're becoming more evident with every game.

They all have to change into yellow kits after the warm down? Can't they just go home? (Poor Steven is such a worrier - he looks older than his years. I'm surprised his shopaholic wife hasn't carted him off for endless facial sessions.)

They really need to re-learn the power of possession. If you have the ball on the right or left of their area, don't cross unless you really know what you're doing (and often this season we don't) - move the ball around, stay patient and wait for the opening. Coutinho was atrocious, absolutely stupid at times. We got through it and survived, but now they all have to be reminded that the ball is worth keeping.

I hate to say it but I can remember United under Ferguson being great at that, just maintain possession around their box and keep the ball moving, build the pressure and wait for an opening. Forcing it and losing the ball hurts us. Markovic in particular was doing that shit, wasteful, going through the motions crossing you mentioned against Villa.

Exactly. We're not doing loads wrong. It's decision making in that last third of the pitch. And even then, it's sometimes the right decision making, but at too slow a pace. It's like the team is suffering a mental hangover from last season.

Ballotelli was taking a bit of stick from fans in the ground calling him a lamppost and never really working - a view I completely don't share. He does chase the ball down a lot. It doesn't come naturally to him, granted, but he does do it. He doesn't move much when we do have possession, but fans, and the team to some degree, need to move on from the Luis Suarez era. If you get the ball to Ballotelli's feet in the box, he will finish it in ways only class strikers can. Suarez wouldn't have had the strength to score that goal today. It's time we start playing to his Mario's strengths rather than expecting to be a player he isn't.

Lallana was bang average throughout and looked out of his depth. Lovren doesn't look as good as we hoped and Sakho switches between a world-class CB and a hapless twat by the second.

Moreno and Sterling combined excellently throughout and were two of our best players.

Manquillo and Lallana did very little in the first half, but Manquillo started getting forward in the second half and looked a much better player for it.

Mignolet at fault for the goal, but so are the CM's of Henderson and Gerrard. They left the middle completely exposed and weren't smart or quick enough to get back in time.

Ludogorets played well today and deserved credit. Sharp, smart counter-attacking and they defended well.

Tbf, I think the fact we're throwing loads more crosses in means Rodgers realises we need to get the ball to ballotelli rather than wait for him to come & get it, but it's a big change in style.

We usually one touch it or spray a ball then bomb on. To do that at speed is extremely difficult, & probably goes a long way to explaining why Moreno hit loads long, he was rubbing so quickly with it he was just wellying it.

That said, if the cross he played to Henderson falls for Ballotelli it's a goal all day long.

I agree that we put more crosses in now and the pace of Moreno will help and allow Ballotelli to be a success here, but it's more than just crosses. We need to be comfortable getting the ball quickly to him even when his back is to goal, rather than looking for intricate one, twos as a matter of default, and he has to have the faith and the confidence to shrug a player off, turn and twat it dead hard.

Our defending is just very naive as James (oh sit down) said.

Our finishing is lacking

So yeah. Concern.

But it's early doors - we have a Manager that knows this wasn't good enough so we will be grand

Also - How many injured Regular players and players coming back from injury do we have?

Any squad would be a shade off it's normal self

The only "regular" player we have coming back is Sturridge imo.
We have players who are supposed to be able to replace Allen and Skrtel with no significant change.
Can is unfortunately also injured but he's supposed to be the option in the centre.
Oh and Johnson, but no one's missing him atm, am I right?

Just got back from the match.
Great experience, patchy although at times AMAZING atmosphere and a brilliant result.
The performance was ultra sketchy.

Right now there are imho 3 things that need addressing.

1.Play 2 upfront for fuck sake. Its what made us GREAT last year. Two up top with one (sterling) in behind and then depending on the oppo either a triangle with one deep or two deep.

2.Coutinho. Hes fucking awful. Needs dropping

3.Gerrard. He isnt a DM and is either (when we have the ball) too deep or (when we dont have it) too high up the pitch leaving massive 30 yards of space between midfield and defence, this coupled with out fullbacks being up the pitch and our CB's playing wider to compensate, basically leaves a good 30 yard square of grass free between the centre circle and the D into which one pass sees their players practically through on goal.

Please play the 4-4-2 we played last year and against Spurs, this one up top is PiSH.

Ah man, you lucky duck.

Just watched highlights. I liked what I saw oddly enough

Except for that last goal. How on earth, did Mignolet, sakho, and louvren let that happen.

Because of this, The key word for me for this year is patience. Especially with the keystone cops at the back.

I liked what I saw with Lallana (lovely passing, and striking of the ball, alonso-esque) but he is not fit.

Loved Moreno. Manquillo had a great chance. I loved him being that far up

But with Sturridge bound to be injured and with no Suarez, and so many new players, we need patience

When we lose silly games like last weekend, we can't lose faith. When we feel the new players don't get the system, and the press are saying we are a one man team, we will need patience.

You can see it coming together, but it's not going to be four steps forward. Two forward and one back..

There's a great amount of talent there, and a brilliant manager, so it will come.

Even our defense will get better. They must Because we just used a massive bit of luck

Watched the game. Glad I did. Came away much more positive than this site. I have time for all of them again. Besides maybe Gerrard as a defensive player and I'm genuinely unsure of Mignolet. So nothing new.

Very impressed with what a fit Lallana will look like. I want him in the midfield when thats the case though. I've always thought that though. But he is so confident it's great. His speed with the ball looks special. Moreno is excellent but puts pressure on our CBs often enough. Manquillo less so on both but very positive. Lovren and Sakho have heavy legs still, as they all do, but when you're the last line of defense - any little slip 🙁. Henderson is a machine. Balo will do that enough times to make it a good investment, but I'm spoiled after Torres and Suarez back to back. Coutinho getting a little bit of an unnecessary beating on here today. Couple of things go the the other way and it looks a good performance he did a lot of good. Besides a few lazy moments and his shooting though.

Just looking at the Ludogorets goal again:

1. Moreno was naive to run all the way upfield to join the attack while protecting a 1-goal lead in the 90th minute. This is a classic case where the brain should be overriding the instinct, that's what Rafa would be teaching from his first day. It's not like there was a clear goal-scoring opportunity anyway, the Bulgarians still had 3 defenders back guarding Balotelli and Borini in the box.

2. When Sterling was dispossessed, Gerrard and Henderson were both caught in no-man's land. One of them should have stayed back and I think it should have been Gerrard. As the Bulgarian player is about to start a counter-attack, at least Hendo looks back and tries organize the defenders; Gerrard just jogs back. Had he been more aware, he might have had a chance to intercept the pass or close the passing lane, which was just a few yards to his left. Was he so dog-tired he couldn't even think on the pitch?

3. Lucas was covering the space near the flank left by Moreno and was left alone with 3 opponents – one of them was going to receive the ball no matter what Lucas did. Had Moreno not made that run forward, Lucas could have stayed more central and maybe would have prevented the attack from developing.

4. Ironically, Lovren is probably the least culpable player in this. His only mistake was slowing down a tad too much just at the moment the pass was played, while the Bulgarian striker was accelerating into the space behind him.

5. Mignolet – his decision to come out has turned a dangerous, but manageable situation into a near-certain goal. I think he just panicked or had a rush of blood to the head and wasn't thinking. In any case, the cause was purely psychological. Had he stayed in goal, the striker's best option would have been a shot from a tight angle with 2 defenders on his heels.

It's kind of meaningless, but if I were to divide the culpability of the goal, I would say 40% Mignolet, 25% each Gerrard and Moreno and 10% Lovren.

Good post Rurik. I thought Lovren was pretty good yesterday, again. He'll be boss if people stop judging our players after 3-4 games.
The issue with Sakho is that he's faultless for 95% of the game and then has a couple of brainfarts. The personal mistakes has to go asap.

It was very inexperienced the way we stormed forward on 1-0. There was no need for it and it could have cost us big time.
The reason we're not playing 4-4-2 is because of Allens injury imho.
Once he's back it will be 4-4-2 again.

Ming? Hmm. At fault for the goal. Hasnt stepped up so far and looks indecisive.
If Valdes passes the medical in October, hasnt lost his ability and signs, he'll be our new nr 1 pretty quickly.

Not paying a few extra mill for Begovic last summer looks some poor business now.

The thing with Mignolet is that for 1 on 1s, which we seem to be seeing quite often with the way we play, or FKs, I always think he'll save it, he's a very very very good shot-stopper. Unfortunately there are some weaknesses to his game that are detrimental to the team as whole (and especially our defenders) that I no longer see as him being able to overcome.
