Had we sold Salah for 30 million in the summer, bought freddos with it and any wages since, we would now be billionaires.

Which brings us back to the dot com crash. Nortel (then a leading comms OEM) were faring fairly badly, and someone worked out (using arithmetic similar to Woland's freddo logic) that if shareholders in Nortel had instead spent their money on bottled beer, they would have been able to drink all the beer and still got a better return on empties than they got on their shareholding. Based on that fact, I upped my beer consumption around 2001, and have never looked back.
