Cos maybe, finally, about-fucking-timely we're the ones taking charge of player arrivals, and not being dictated to by players demanding ridiculous wages and clubs demanding ridiculous transfer fees.

I'd have liked this lad, but if this is an indicator that we're going to be more assertive and more measured in the market, and get rid of this fucking horrendous cycle of getting humped everytime a transfer window opens - then losing out on Gylfi is a sacrifice I'm prepared to live with.

If that's the truth then I'd happily agree with you.

If it's down to us being fucked about again I'd be pissed off.

We haven't dragged our feet on this. Liverpool agreed price and terms. Spurs came in and upped the ante. This is not an auction.

To put this in perspective, Gylfi is 22 and failed at Hoffenheim. He is not the second coming despite being a good player. He earned a move on the back of his performances at Swansea which were solid. He's in it for the money at managerless Spurs with no guarantees. The new manager may come in and think he's shit. So good riddance if thats the path he chooses. We want players committed to the Liverpool cause.

We should not be held to ransom by any players, agents or selling clubs. Walk on!

If Spurs are offering the reported 70k which is 30% more than what we're offering, that means we're offering him 50k-55k a week, that's a pretty good offer if you ask me. If I was us I'd say look we'll come up to 60k but that's it. Compromise but don't get extorted.

He was their player of the season, is that a failure?

He's not the second coming but a good player. If he goes to Spurs then fine. Plenty of good players out there.

I wouldn't raise the offer TBH. It's Rodgers who wants him and I'm sure the offer will have been pitched at a level Rodgers thinks appropriate. If Gylfi wants more he can bugger off to Tottenham for it.

I don't agree. It smacks of realism to me. We have our own idea of what he's worth, and won't be dictated to by players and agents.

That does it. If Gylfi agrees to work under him rather than Rodgers, we're well out of it.
Strange choice in my opinion after he blossomed under Rodgers but his to make. He'll be fighting it out with Modric, Huddlestone, Parker, Sandro, Pienaar and VDV.

Or this could be a alves/ vidic situation where we dick around with a transfer, another club swoops and we live to regret with our lesser talented players.

Then again no one really knows until after the window.

Its amazing how many people have changed their tune on approaching transfers in a more measured manner.

Last year it was - 20m for Downing is fine, we need a left winger. Now its - we've offered what we think hes worth, fuck him.

Thank fuck Rafa wasnt allowed back. Excuse number one would be utilised already.

I'm not sure that many people thought £20 mill.for Downing was fine. Some did, but I reckon most of us - even those who were happy with the choice of player - thought the fee pretty steep.

Goods & services cost more, yes.

Property significantly more, yes.

Lifestyle costs more, yes.

So, erm, yes.

They may have more money than us but they still pay about 30% more for stuff if they are in London.

I dont understand how you dont get that.

ROFL.

Bollocks. My daughter lives there and I pay the rent and her living costs. I do know what it costs. Considering how these guys earn 20-30-40-50k a week and often much much more I have no idea how you don't get that the difference will impact on their living costs in virtually no way at all. We are NOT talking about your average man in the street here. You think that London's 30% weighting will impact an income of 250k a month - dream on. They will hardly notice it.

I agree on all counts.

I think we're all a bit risk averse because we know the kind of money we're paying talentless fucks in the squad - but every time you try to improve that squad you're taking that risk. I don't give a shit how much we pay players as long as they're excellent. I wouldn't want to lose out on good players because of past crimes.

I mean I don't know the specifics but I'm pretty sure this guy will cost less than a Downing and is being offered less than a Downing. Likewise he'll cost less than a Henderson and is being offered less than a Henderson...

So out of some spite for paying well over the odds for those two wankbags we start next season with them, scared to add to the squad? Fuck that shit.

Well we are losing out on players because of past crimes, since we're still paying the useless fucks.

I'd much rather pay Gylfi 70k a week, than 80 to Aquilani or 90 to Joe Cole.

By the same token, those that are saying we're being small time not matching Spurs' offer and not having this wrapped up, are the same ones that were pointing out last season how we were overpaying for players and allowing clubs and agents to sting us.

Work's both ways.

It doesn't work both ways. All our players should be on top money because they should all be excellent. The only problem is we've bought loads of shit. That doesn't change the fact that the next dude we buy should expect to be earning top money, to not expect it is to expect him to be shit.

We all would, but to get those two off the wage bill we'll have to pay them off, most likely. So it's not simply a case of paying Gylfi 70k instead of Cole. It's paying Cole a few million to get him off our hands, getting next to nothing in a transfer fee and THEN paying £8m or whatever for Gylfi and paying him 70k pw.
