Pre Match Pre Match - Arsenal (a) - Sun 16:30

Nunez would be a good physical presence to have in and around Gabriel, who likes to assert himself on opponents. I think Gravy & Nunez would both have points to prove, and Diaz should be well rested from the last two games and go all guns blazing.

I would quite like them to have one of Havert/Trossard in midfield as it would help us win that battle. Jorginho seems to only ever play well against us, and I don't really want to see him starting.

Logged in concerned that Lord Jinxy from down under would have started this already.

Huge game. Couldn’t ask for Arsenal to be without two more important players plus a slightly injured Saka.

This would be such an important win. The only question mark for me is how we fit Jones in. I’d actually start him over Macca, as a show of faith. I don’t think it’s an option for either to do the Szobo pressing role.

Kelleher

Trent
Konate
Virgil
Robbo

Gravy
Jones
Szobo

Salah
Nunez
Diaz

Excited to see our new version of Gravy here. As it was against Arsenal last season he put in a terrible showing. Really fancy him against Rice here.
Jinx me hole. We are getting a battering Sunday.

Trossard is probably the last one I'd like to see in there, because he's exactly the sort of player who would pop up with a match winning goal. He might not have the all round game the others possess, but he's probably one of their better finishers.

We will be lucky if we manage to concede less than 5 goals, even if Saliba was available that team would still struggle.

--

Califiori's injury looks serious so obviously a massive doubt for Sunday. Saliba is suspended, so where does that leave the defence. Hopefully Timber is fit...but not holding my breath on that. White's form in the last two games is a worry, and Kiwior is a worry even when fully fit.
I don't think Liverpool are as good as the media want us to believe they are, however as a side they can and will smell blood. I fear a long uncomfortable evening in The Emirates.

ITK
Understand Bukayo Saka is expected to be available for the upcoming match against Liverpool, having trained, pending any last-minute changes or niggles, meanwhile Riccardo Calafiori is set to undergo a crucial scan scheduled for today.
Bukayo Saka not ruled out of title showdown against Liverpool, with the Arsenal attacker hoping to prove his fitness ahead of Sunday's clash. Mikel Arteta said on Tuesday it is 'unlikely' Saka will be fit

--

Even with 11 men we're struggling. We're going through Jose's 3rd season syndrome.

Arteta cannot rejuvinate our attack and now that injuries are mounting up (thanks to coneboy's lack of rotation in the past seasons). We're due a massive slump in form.

--

Yeah I'm not expecting him (Calafiori) back. I just hope it's not Kiwior, he ain't ready for this game. Back 4 being White-Kiwior-Gabriel-Zinchenko
--

Zinny at left back? Nah, I’d rather drag someone from the crowd to play there.
--

Raya
Partey - White - Gabriel - Kiwior
Rice
Trossard - Merino
Saka - Havertz - Martinelli

I assume we will see this since Arteta tends to play Partey at right back if possible.

--
Pool looking good tonight.

--

Not looking forward to this, sad times.
--

Kiwior or Zinchenko against Salah is going to be ugly.
Unless there’s a miracle and Saka, Timber and Calafiori are somehow fit for Sunday, our potential lineup is looking really grim.

--
Liverpool will definitely look to be more conservative against us on Sunday. Unpopular opinion but I think this team would be harder to play against than Klopp's approach last season. Its going to be a game of fine moments, they will look to create space with their passing and movement, with a focus on direct play ... Oh, and we need to be up by halftime. The longer the game remains the tight chess match the worse for us I feel.
--

Arsenal will also be very conservative, therefore both teams will want to give the possession to the opponent, IMHO.
Must win for Arsenal, but I'm not very optimistic due to injuries and Saliba's suspension.
--

You get the feeling this game comes at the worst possible moment for us.

What a bunch of fannies.

Just remember last season in this same fixture we were without Salah, Endo, Robbo, and Szob due to injuries, AFCON, and Asia Cup. We also lost Tsimi in the early part of the game. Last season it was really bad for Gravy and Klopp completely lost it with him, we really needed Szobo in that game, and Mac was pissing about too much with the ball and very slow to react.

It will hopefully be different this season but given our success so far with Szobo, Mac, Gravey in midfield I would start them, I think starting Jones maybe a problem with Gravey, as Gravey needs more defensive support and Mac will be better at that than Jones who kind of occupies the most comfortable side that Gravy prefers.

I cant wait till this game and anything short of a victory given Arsenals injury woes will be seen as failure. We need to win this game.

Forecasts on the BBC are interesting(ish) :

23% Liverpool to win 1-2
20% Draw 1-1
9% Liverpool to win 0-2
9% Arsenal to win 2-1
39% Other (that's an unusually high %)

Haven't you sort of misread how our midfield plays? Jones doesn't play the side Gravy prefers (right), he plays on the left (totally nullified Palmer last time out in the PL) and in a 3 of Gravy, Mac and Jones, Jones wouldn't be in the pivot, he'd be replacing Szobo as the attacking 8. If you want to look at the benefit then look at the two penalties (!) he won and the goal he scored vs Chelsea then ask yourself when is the last time Szobo did anything like that.

For me it comes down to either being relatively conservative (Szobo) or adding more to the fluency of the attack (Jones). That said we should still look at their consistency and Szobo has been up and down like a yo-yo this season, not that Jones is the epitome of consistency himself but he does look after the ball much better than Szobo and has more creativity in and around the box.

@mark1975 Everything goes through Saka, and they've been awful without him. I think they become a much lesser threat without, but I do agree that Martinelle always gets output against us

Given Trents form so far I look forward to him being up against Martinelli.

Same. I also think Szobo would overload that side and help Salah against whichever joker ends up starting LB for them which would force Martinelli to have to cover.

Yeah that's why Gakpo was a sub for the first 6-7 league games
Gakpo IS a sub. And that's why he was a sub for the first 6-7 league games. That remained from under the old, Klopp regime.

The pecking order under Slot is and was: Salah/Jota/Diaz, then Gakpo, and then Nunez. With Gakpo having regularly been praised and mentioned by Slot. And Nunez not at all. Diaz deserved his mentions with great performances. Now it appears that Diaz is concerned for his place. And Slot likes that. Slot uses that to motivate his players. So that they would fight and run more on the pitch. A good example of that is Endo who lost his place completely to Gravenberch and then was throwing himself after balls and even used an arm to push the ball out.

From what I've seen so far of Slot he doesn't appear to rotate players regularly and manage them like that. Klopp was much better at managing such things. Slot, in contrast, appears to work through a pecking order and has players fight for their place within that pecking order. He likes to keep players like that. Dependent on him and whether he will play them and how much. So that they would bite more. The problem with that approach is that 1. He doesn't seem to at all understand the logic and the need for rotation, as well as that 2. Since he arrived it was clearly evident that all of LFC's Dutch players received a greater profile. Slot has made a good impact on Dutch players and on Grav in particular. But Gakpo hasn't been elevated but remains kinda the same as usual (something like a bit better version of that Babel player, if my memory serves me well, who played under Rafa).

I think that one of the reasons why Diaz had such a great start to his season is because he felt that his place was threatened by Gakpo. That's what Slot is like. Perhaps none of you guys were professional athletes but that is how things work in dressing rooms and on training grounds. When a new coach and/or manager shows up, everyone sees right away who among the players he prefers. And players fight for that order. Things like who sits where during breakfasts, who does the manage look at when talking during training sessions, etc., are important. And that is the information that players' agents work from and pursue in the media and in other places. And sometimes the clubs become unhappy with how a new manager or coach has changed the dressing room. In Italy things like that happen all the time.

Arteta faces tough defence decisions

Jakub Kiwior did not look too impressed when he was hauled off against Bournemouth, having being brought on to stiffen Arsenal’s rearguard after the dismissal of William Saliba. The Poland defender was rumoured to be on his way out of the Emirates in the summer after the arrival of Riccardo Calafiori. Mikel Arteta will be thankful he is still around given their current defensive crisis, with the Italian expected to miss out against Liverpool While Kiwior was at fault for Bournemouth’s second goal after his sloppy back-pass led to David Raya giving away a penalty, he could have a crucial part to play against Arne Slot’s side, with Arsenal’s options down to the bare bones given Saliba’s suspension and the continuing absence of Jurriën Timber. Arteta must decide whether he or Ben White should partner Gabriel Magalhães in central defence as they face Mohamed Salah and company. EA

My gooner mates think Saka is a certain starter - but that the others are defo out.

As Arsenal prepares to host Liverpool in a much-anticipated clash, the spotlight shines not only on the teams but also on the intriguing tactical battle led by the managers. Mikel Arteta’s Gunners will be looking to solidify their title ambitions, while Liverpool, under the astute leadership of Jürgen Klopp, aims to reclaim their spot among the elite.

However, a cheeky subplot emerges with the mention of "Dirty Slot"—the nickname humorously attributed to Feyenoord's Arne Slot for his gritty, unorthodox tactics that have made waves in European football. While he’s not directly involved in this fixture, the moniker could serve as a reminder of the sometimes ruthless nature of high-stakes matches, reminiscent of Slot’s aggressive style.

Both teams are known for their attacking flair and resilience, making this encounter a must-watch. Arsenal’s home advantage and Liverpool's penchant for thrilling comebacks promise a match filled with intensity and drama. Will "Dirty Slot" be a distant memory, or will his influence seep into this battle of the titans? Only time will tell as these two Premier League giants clash for crucial points.
