BRENDAN RODGERS is ready to snatch Gylfi Sigurdsson away from Swansea City – but he’s having to pay £8.5m to make it happen.
The new Liverpool boss is set to unveil the Iceland ace, 22, as his first signing as Anfield chief just weeks after he had helped set up a record deal to make him a Swansea player.
Sigurdsson, who starred on loan at the Liberty last term, had agreed a £6.8m move from German side Hoffenheim.
But that deal hit the buffers when mentor Rodgers quit – and Sigurdsson has made it clear he wants to join him.
Hoffenheim said over the weekend they had not received a formal bid from Liverpool and were expecting Sigurdsson to start pre-season in Germany today.
But Liverpool looked to have made their move in the last 48 hours.
Rodgers, though, will have to pay more than £1.5m than Swansea had agreed, with suggestions Huw Jenkins had negotiated a discount after already paying a loan fee last term for the midfielder.
With sources close to the player indicating a deal could happen this week, Sigurdsson is still due to speak to new Swans boss Michael Laudrup.
But it is likely to be a mere formality, with Swansea accepting the deal was in doubt the moment Rodgers quit.
Swansea will now turn their attentions to other targets, with new man Laudrup – set to be introduced to the media this week – handed a transfer budget of as much as £15m.
But a move for Steven Caulker must be put on hold, with the Spurs centre-back keen to see who replaces Harry Redknapp at White Hart Lane.
