To me, his lack of absolute top level and international games puts him nowhere near the senior level. Being captain of Villa doesn’t make him as senior as players who have dozens of champions league games.
I'm guessing you'd have had Sterling, Stones and Shaw ahead of Grealish then?

Southgate said he picked the peno takers based on how they did in training.
That is just crazy. Incomparable.

Also, it's not totally uncommon for players to be subbed on only for penalty duty.
So he felt more confident with Rash and Sancho, I have no problem with that.
But why the fuck was Saka taking the 5th?

Genuinely couldn't have written a better way for England to lose.

2 utd players bottling it, FANTASTIC.

WELL DONE SOUTHGATE YOU GENIUS.

He’s stuck the ball in the net more than Grealish. Anyway, I don’t know why I’m debating it. I’m made up they lost.

Sterling would have bottled it though, even if he thinks he is the big man.

I’d have expected one of the players to step up and do it instead of Saka. But it just shows what cunts they are. Hendo would have done so.
He was also one of the few, if not the only one, to have the respect to leave the silver medal around his neck.

Yes, you'd expect the seniors to step up and take responsibilty.

Mrs Athens was also asking why they were taking the medals off. You don't see silver medalists in any other sports taking their medals off straight away.

Yeah one team did it and everyone thought it was cool. Now everyone does it.
In all fairness, in other sports the silver medal is a "better than nothing medal".

They are taking responsibility, they're taking it now saying we lost "as a team", such heroes, taking responsibility when it makes them feel and look good.

Can anyone tell me why many England players took they medals off instantly?
Seemed petulant to me.
To be fair it's the same in any tournament, international or club. Everyone takes the runners up medal off. It's not something to be proud of at that moment.

I agree with this for the same reason I said saka shouldn't take one.

What the fuck have villa/arsenal competed for in recent years that shows these players can cope with pressure? These players have never been in a comparable situation.

Ah, it is? I was not aware. Thought it looked a bit odd, but didn't remember previous seremonies.

One team played to win, another played not to lose. England were lucky in the end it even went down to the coin flip of a penalty shootout. So much talent in the squad. There will be hype about making the final, but in reality they beat one top tier team on the way there and a lot of that came down to Germany missing/ Pickford making some v good saves.

I would love to watch that England squad with an attacking mindset, it has all of the ingredients required to win the world cup

Yeah most teams tend to, and I agree with it TBF. The medal is a reminder of glorious failure. Keep it to spur you on next time, but you're not going to longingly look at it are you

I clearly meant as a penalty taker. Not for Southgates inept decision to bring him on during extra time.

For me the fault lies with 3 people.

Southgate - both for his timing of subs and penalty takers. Every man and his dog could see the Italy goal was coming and was crying out for a change of shape.

Rashford - You need to get your penalty on target, first and foremost. 3-2 up, or 3-3 and Sanchos penalty has a different kind of pressure.

Grealish - shirking a penalty when you are one of the senior players left on the pitch doesn't sit well with me.
Southgate has confirmed he decided the takers completely on his own. Grealish should have been on at the latest on 70 mins and it would never have gone to penos
