Yeah it wasn't foreseeable that teenagers would crumble under the immense pressure. Southgate's an idiot. I feel terrible for those two.Just messing... I am sure southgate was going based on the practices... he could have come off a genius but what happened happened
This.
WTF was Southgate thinking? He's been there and missed. He knows the pressure and he loads it on a kid that was 17 when the tournament began and then a 19 year in a tournament deciding spot kick. He should have gone with his most experienced players, Hendo, Shaw, Grealish even Stones.
However Italy deserved to win. Their goal was lucky, coming back off the post after a great save, and they didn't create any other real chances, but you can't argue with 19 shots to 6.
Southgate, as I said once the team was announced, was a coward. We had excellent attacking talent but he decided to pack his defence. Having started with 4-3-3 for every game up to here and only reverted to a back five to defend a lead (Germany and last 20 mins of the Denmark game).
Take the opportunity he said ... he spurned it.
Seriously ? He came on the 99th minute ! When England were in full defensive mode. And in 11 mins he still nearly put Saka in and drew 3 fouls. He should have been on a LOT earlier when England were under pressure, as an outlet that can keep hold of the ball and draw fouls to reduce the pressure.... Where the fuck was Saint Grealish? Went under a fucking rock that's where. Club captain.. penalty taker for club.. where was he?
I clearly meant as a penalty taker. Not for Southgates inept decision to bring him on during extra time.Seriously ? He came on the 99th minute ! When England were in full defensive mode. The blame, for England's lack of attacking intent and penalty misses ... lies solely with Southgate.
They both had a right to go for it, and the slick surface of the ball jorginho slipped to the side of. He didn't go over the ball, he didn't go to hurt an opponent, he made contact with the ball, and his other touching the floor at point of contact. Saint grealish milked the fuck out of it.You don't agree with a player being penalised for moving 2ft with their studs showing and landing on an opponents thigh?
Lol, ok.
Yep. Twitter needs to do much much more to keep those kind of idiots off social media. People can all too easily hide behind VPNs and burner email addresses. Its being reported that loads of online rasicst abuse happened after the game towards certain English players.

Its probably right.. early in the shootout. From what I've heard, he's gone with 'sports science' and how kids react better to pressure #s wise (for penalty shoot outs)
Par for the course in all countries
I still find it insane that Saka was picked for the 5th penalty.
Grealish, Sterling, Stones or Shaw. Someone with more experience.
And Kane didnt get a touch of the ball in the Italian box for 120 mins.
Thats shocking aswell.
Agree with the comments on Southgate and Rashford but you seem to have it in for Grealish without knowing the facts. Southgate said HE chose the penalty takers based on their performance in training (not on senior players putting their hand up) and I saw Southgate pointing a finger at him and Grealish nodding during the huddle, I'd guess he was lined up for #6 ... but he should have been #4 or #5.I clearly meant as a penalty taker. For me the fault lies with 3 people.
Southgate - both for his timing of subs and penalty takers. Every man and his dog could see the Italy goal was coming and was crying out for a change of shape.
Rashford - You need to get your penalty on target, first and foremost. 3-2 up, or 3-3 and Sanchos penalty has a different kind of pressure.
Grealish - shirking a penalty when you are one of the senior players left on the pitch doesn't sit well with me.
A bit of that has to be a) on Southgate (tactically) and b) Kane (coming so deep so often - help open up the flanks early on but eventually when closed, he kept on trying).
He didn't seem 100% healthy ..
Practice goes out the window though as every single pro will tell you. Waddle the prime example.Just messing... I am sure southgate was going based on the practices... he could have come off a genius but what happened happened
I didn't have it in for Grealish. I also think he made a mistake taking Henderson off. He should have taken one too.Agree with the comments on Southgate and Rashford but you seem to have it in for Grealish without knowing the facts. Yep. As I said above .. Hendo & Grealish should both have been in, not teenagers.I didn't have it in for Grealish. I also think he made a mistake taking Henderson off. He should have taken one too.
Kane, Grealish, Henderson. 3 club captains should have been on the first 5 for me. None of this 'the sports science suggests' or 'based on training kicks' for me.
Look at Italy, they had their best penalty taker at 5 (although he missed).
Why are people calling Grealish a senior player? How many games does he have in the top flight or European competition?
It sounds harsh given that he's taken England to a semi-final and a final in his time as a manager but I just don't rate Southgate.
England has a talented group of youngsters and it's hard to see Southgate building a real team out of them.
6 years older and 160 more games played. You’d expect him to be more ready to step up.
He's a club captain. 25 years of age. That for me makes him a senior player. Regardless of which divisions hes played inI am not making a case for Saka to take one ahead of him. It’s the whole crap about a player being senior who has less than 100 premier league games, of which a huge proportion were played in empty stadiums. He’s never had high pressure top flight games. He is not a senior player.
