He's a good player Dreamie but that's a bit of a stretch to say as absolute fact it wouldn't have gone to penalties if he was on earlier.

Come on, nobody sets up a inexperienced 19 year old for the last penalty in a shoot out in a final, beforehand. Get fucking real.
He might say it afterwards, but no.

I am not making a case for Saka to take one ahead of him. It’s the whole crap about a player being senior who has less than 100 premier league games, of which a huge proportion were played in empty stadiums. He’s never had high pressure top flight games. He is not a senior player.
He was the best player for his team in the biggest (financial) game in world football. Not enough pressure for you?

He should have stepped up regardless - as should have Shaw (who takes a great FK).
Oh well ... Hopefully Grealish is that miserable for Man City next year too.
You can’t step up if the manager calls the shots. I’ve stopped players who wanted to take penalties in shootouts.

It was between 2 championship sides. It’s not like he’s locking horns with the best Europe had to offer. The pressure playing for Villa is absolutely nowhere near as being part of a team with one of the big boys.

Can anyone tell me why many England players took they medals off instantly?
Seemed petulant to me.

I’d have expected one of the players to step up and do it instead of Saka. But it just shows what cunts they are. Hendo would have done so.
He was also one of the few, if not the only one, to have the respect to leave the silver medal around his neck.

Many players from many teams in many finals do this. It's nothing to make an issue of or use for finger pointing. Just disappointment, it's not like they bin them !

Of course it’s speculation but in a few mins he drew numerous fouls, almost had a player sent off, nearly sent Saka through and generally created space for others. Give him 60 mins and I think England would have created a few chances and Kane would prob be the hero. Glad it didn’t happen but gobsmacked Southgate didn’t bring him on when they were crying out for someone to hold up the ball and give them some relief.

Southgate has confirmed he decided the takers completely on his own. Grealish should have been on at the latest on 70 mins and it would never have gone to penos
I do agree the subs were too late. The sub should have been made at 60 minutes to shore up the midfield with Henderson.

Grealish I agree should have been brought on earlier.

I have no problem with making subs with penalties in mind. However to do it at 119 minutes doesn't sit well with me. You could make the argument they are fresh, but they haven't been in the game. So would be over thinking everything. If you are going to do it. Do it at half time in extra time.

The good thing for this England team is that a lot of monkeys will be off their backs.

Not being in a final for 55 years
Never being in a Euro final
Never lost a final

I hope it's not 55 years until they are in another final.

It seems every team uses our media as additional motivation with questions like 'can you stop it coming home?' Just fuck off.. ask him something meaningful about his own country and what it would mean to win rather than spin it about England.

The pressure of the Championship play off is huge. The ultimate winner takes it all after a 9 month slog.

There you go - you had to stop them ... when you saw the England circle, no players stood up to say, "Gaffa I want the penalty" ... Says enough about England's senior players.

Easy to say now but when I saw him make the subs at 119 I said ‘they’ll both miss’ just insane. So much pressure. Not like you played your part and a penalty is a lottery. You are literally only involved to score a peno. So much additional pressure and Rashford has a history of missing. It was insane.

I agree with this for the same reason I said saka shouldn't take one.

What the fuck have villa/arsenal competed for in recent years that shows these players can cope with pressure? These players have never been in a comparable situation.
Age & experience matters ... Grealish has now played in 4 cup finals and 260+ games, Saka just over a 100 games and that was his first final (playing all 120 mins and therefore fatigued). Considering Grealish's passing accuracy and ball control I'd have had him over Saka every day of the week - and he was due to take one (the one after Saka perhaps)?

Haha Hansern comes out and calls Southgate a liar ... I'm guessing the players know which it was 😗

What is getting overlooked here is that (according to Crouchy's pod, which i think is an ok source, but admittedly not gospel) players put themselves forward for pens. I think order for those who put themselves forward should be carefully addressed. Kane taking first pen - low pressure. Saka on fifth - insane pressure, although also with the greatest reward if it were to win.

Raheem & Grealish clearly didn't put themselves forward, for whatever reason.

I think two pinch hitters coming on in 119th min to take pens was a bold move but neither had a proper kick of the ball after coming on and didn't have time to let nerves settle.

Kudos to Pickford for his saves, Jorginho is one of the best in Europe at Pens and that was an extreme pressure situation.

He still has not been doing it against the best of the best. He has 12 more international caps than I do. He is nowhere near a senior player.

Let’s use F1 as an example. An F2 driver wins the title (insane pressure to do so) and gets a seat in F1. After 2 seasons at a back/midfield team he isn’t considered a senior driver no matter his talent. The senior drivers are those who win races and titles.

This isn't about ego, it's about a healthy self-esteem and senior players wanting to be there when it counts.
This isn't Drogba asking to take the last penalty so he can be the 'hero' ...
Everything anyone has written here about players should have stepped up and demanding to take one etc. etc. is purely an attack on players they dislike or speculation, no-one here knows what was said beforehand. What we do know is that Southgate said categorically that they had chosen the 5 takers based on training ground performance.

If you watched the huddle then you'd have seen Southgate speaking directly to (and pointing at) Grealish and Grealish nodding. They wouldn't have been discussing anything else at that stage. It's a fair assumption he'd been given his number (I'd guess #6 based on that conversation).

Please let me know what players I dislike so I can confirm or deny this speculative claim.

Also, please confirm you think managers always tell the truth and wouldn't lie, or throw themselves under the bus (especially when their jobs are 100% safe), to protect their players and what they're trying to build?

Yeah most teams tend to, and I agree with it TBF. The medal is a reminder of glorious failure. Keep it to spur you on next time, but you're not going to longingly look at it are you

I understand, but it also feels a bit lacking in respect for other teams.

Read the thread .. you'll know who has it in for whom.

He could easily have said they had an idea who they going to choose and made the final decision based on confidence or whatever other reason. Stating they chose them beforehand based on training ground performance might lead to even more criticism. It should do !

If he did, he’s a fucking idiot. A 19 year old kid takes some good penalties in practice so he then can take the last in a European Championship final.
Come on.

I don't know what point you're trying to make, but he took the 5th one and Southgate clearly decided on that. Whether you think it was the right decision or wrong decision is irrelevant as to whether the manager went with that line of thinking.

If three of his five penalty takers were Saka, Rashford and Sancho, whatever order he'd have done it in we could pick the bones out of. You always want to make sure you score the first one, so you're not under pressure straight away, so Kane taking it was a logical choice. Ideally Rashford should have taken the 5th, but it's done now. It was a bad decision, but it clearly was the managers shout even if it backfired.

And the racist idiots on Twitter need hanging out to dry. Oh, and we can do without classless pricks like Dantes coming on here giving it "ahahahahaha". Go fuck yourself Dantes.
