Good words from a smart young bloke. And he is right - you cannot overestimate how the attitude of Suarez is making all the other players, especially young ones, work harder and push themselves more. This is something you can't replace with money.

Philippe Coutinho similar to Lionel Messi, says Mauricio Pochettino
BARCLAYS PREMIER LEAGUE

  • Venue: St Mary's Stadium
  • Date: Saturday, 16 March
Liverpool's Philippe Coutinho has similar qualities to Ronaldinho and Lionel Messi, according to Southampton manager Mauricio Pochettino.
On Saturday, the Saints host a Liverpool side likely to include the 20-year-old, who has impressed since moving from Inter Milan in January.
Pochettino coached the Brazilian for a time at Espanyol in Spain last season.
"As with most Brazilians, Philippe has a special magic in his feet," the Saints boss said.

  • Born: June 1992, Rio de Janeiro
  • Height: 5ft 6ins
  • Clubs: Vasco da Gama (2009-10), Inter Milan (2010-12), Espanyol (2012, loan)
  • International: Won 2011 Under-20 World Cup; one Brazil cap (friendly v Iran, October 2010)
"Aside from the magic that he has, he also has an amazing work rate and that makes us doubt whether he fits the mould of a typical Brazilian player or a European one because his work ethic is outstanding.
"What is important about him is he is a good lad, a good kid - a great, humble person."
And the Argentine coach, who tried to bring the player to St Mary's in January, placed him - potentially at least - in the company of fellow countryman and Barcelona legend Messi and Brazilian veteran Ronaldinho.
"I do think Coutinho has that same quality that Ronaldinho and Messi have, but he has much to prove yet," said Pochettino.
"What is really clear to me is that Coutinho is a really responsible player - really dedicated and responsible to his own players."
Coutinho has quickly settled into life at Anfield since his £8.5m switch, with Liverpool winning all three of the Premier League games he has started.
He has struck up a good partnership with Uruguayan striker Luis Suarez, with the Brazilian calling his team-mate "phenomenal", but he admits the physicality of the Premier League has come as a surprise to him.
"It is very different here. In Brazil the game is very open, the defenders are not as tight with the attacker. I think this is the hardest thing here," Coutinho told the Liverpool website.
"Also the game is very quick - but I feel I can improve these things during training and improve my intensity. I have been doing some body building, too, so I can get more used to the physicality."
Coutinho worked under former Espanyol coach Pochettino during a loan spell last season, but the Saints boss was coy about his efforts to sign the midfielder in January.
"What has happened in the past, happened in the past," Pochettino said. "We can't change it or do anything about it. Actually, talking about it is not going to do anything positive either."

Philippe Coutinho: Happy with his start to life at Liverpool
Liverpool youngster Philippe Coutinho has been pleased with his start to life at Anfield and is hoping to make a big impact at the club.
The 20-year-old Brazilian has already impressed on Merseyside since making the move from Inter Milan in January, notching up two goals and two assists from his four starts.
Coutinho is happy with how things are going and the playmaker hopes he can establish himself as an important player for the Reds.

"I hope to be here for many years and become a big player for Liverpool. I will continue to work hard and do my best to improve my performances and help Liverpool."
Philippe Coutinho

"Things have gone really well for me here so far," Coutinho, who spent time on loan at Espanyol last season, told the Liverpool Echo.
"Maybe because I played in Italy and spent six months in Spain last season that has helped me adapt more quickly to English football.
"Also I must thank my team-mates as they have helped me a lot with my first few games. Everyone has made me feel so welcome.
He added: "The games are quicker and more physical but I like that. I am learning all the time.
"Every player wants to improve and get better and I am the same. I am still young and have so much still to learn.
"I hope to be here for many years and become a big player for Liverpool. I will continue to work hard and do my best to improve my performances and help Liverpool."
Faith

Coutinho is enjoying working under manager Brendan Rodgers and wants to repay his faith by helping the club back to success.
"The manager here is still young but he's an excellent person and a very good coach. He speaks openly to everyone and I'm pleased to be working with him," he said.
"The manager has shown a lot of faith in me and hopefully I will repay that. I want to win some titles here to compensate the club for what they've done for me."
The Brazilian does not speak English and has the help of an interpreter but says he is keen to pick up the language.
He added: "Communication between myself and my team-mates is still a bit difficult. The people here speak very fast so it's difficult to pick up the words but I'm trying.
"If the manager wants to get some information across to me in training he speaks Spanish. (Fellow Brazilian) Lucas has also helped me a lot."

I disagree, I've been one of Enrique's biggest critics, what with his dordling on the ball etc. But this season and in this system he's been fantastic, he's attacking play is second to none, and I've yet to see anyone beat him down the flank. He biggest weakness is still indecision, but that's improving, and no ones perfect.

If the right hand side of our team played as well as our left we would be truly fucking dangerous. Enrique has been playing really really well and has been a big part of our best play this season since he got back in the team.

Yup. So many of our recent great team goals have included him.
It's very noticeable that Suarez gets a lot more chances (apart from those he creates all on his own) down our left than he does when he's on the right.
Enrique and Coutinho are looking like a good combination.

1st goal (vs Swansea)

1st assist (vs Wigan) - for Downing via cross

2nd assist (vs Wigan) - for Suarez via pass

2nd goal (vs Southampton)

3rd assists (vs Aston Villa) - for Henderson via pass

He sure looks a player. And his size has not hindered him at all, he is more than willing to get stuck in and work his socks off. Bargain so far.......

14 million less than Oscar and already has the same amount of goals and assists.

His eye for through ball and the weight of the pass is out of this world.
The one were he sent Luis through in the first half was perfect.

The expression on his face when he missed the chance was a good sign. He had no doubt he would score, and so looked gutted when it went wide. Compare that to some others like Shelvey and Downing who fake completely insincere reactions, but you can see in their eyes that they are actually shocked that it even went that close to the post.

Oscar is also a very good and talented player. But I think part of the reason why Coutihno has hit the ground running in a way Oscar did not is because he is already acclimatized to European football by virtue of playing in Italy and Spain, whereas Oscar came straight from Brazil.

Also, the poisonous atmosphere at Chelsea and the managerial merry-go-round there is really not the best place for a young talent to develop. This is our big advantage over the likes of Chelsea and Man City - not as obvious and ingrained in the public consciousness as their money advantage, but arguably no less important. How many young players have grown up and made it to the first team at Chelsea since Abramovich took over? That's right, big fucking zero. It's hard to run a football club like this, and money can't completely compensate for it. A good football club has to be a farm, not just a supermarket.

Although Chelsea do have that positive role model for the youngsters that no other team has. EBJT. He is someone the kids can really look up to.

Ah bless the rest of our players continuing to attempt to play football. It's cute and everything, but the sooner they accept their role is to pass the ball to Coutinho the better.

For once I'd like to see us start with this attacking line up:

------------Lucas
Henderson--- Gerrard

Coutinho------------Suarez
-----------Sturridge

I love this kid. He's such a clever footballer and he works his socks off too. He did a fuckload of tracking back against villa along with his good moments going forward. He could become a really, really fucking good player.

The Liverpool captain bracketed the new signing with some of the finest footballers he has played alongside at Anfield.

He said: "As a player, since I was a kid you always find it easier to play with top quality players, all the way through, the likes of Michael Owen, Torres, Suarez, Coutinho. They're the easiest players to play with."

The pass to Coutinho from Gerrard that led to the assist is unfortunately the type of pass I've not seen Lucas or Allen make, ever.
We've now got quick players that are capable of making clever runs behind the defence. Thus I think all the other players would do even better if we can get Alonso. ALONSO.

Could not see who the guy who hoofed the ball for Coutinho to run into for that peach of a pass fro Henderson. Now I know it was SG, thanks for that DHSC and I thought it was Agger or Carra! 😉
