We don't need him. .

If the midfield plays well over the next month, like they did yesterday, and we pick up good results. Should he/will he just walk straight back into the starting lineup? Should he? Rodgers doesn't seem have a problem with dropping players not doing their job, or keeping players in the team that have earned their chance.

I think the captaincy is a problem. If he wasn't captain, I think he'd make him work for it and earn his place back in, but because he's the captain, I think he'll just waltz back in regardless.

If we beat Cardiff, Chelsea & City, Rodgers will have a problem. Those results will dictate how much of a headache he'll have.

Screw that, if he manages to win those games with the players at hand, Gerrard no longer has a guaranteed spot in the team. He'll have to earn it like everyone else.
God knows he needs something to spur him on and we all know how he usually plays in the 2nd half of the season.

Agree with Modo there, it would no way be a problem if we won our next 3 or 4, Gerrard would have to wait, he would surely know that as would Rodgers, it would make the situation easier for Rodgers if anything.

Look, everyone knows that Gerrard has struggled this season and as said, a few good deliveries and assists don't begin to cover that up.

The problem with this thread is that it's posted the second after we record a great victory - it's just in bad taste. It might not have been the intention but it does feel like it's using the victory today to try and point score at Gerrard's expense and that doesn't sit right. It's got nothing to do with wanting Gerrard to hang around at the teams expense indefinitely.

The debate is a valid one. The midfield today performed admirably. But it's going to take more than one good game for me to a) start writing Gerrard out of our future and b) extolling the virtues of a midfield that quite frankly still owe us far more than what they've delivered today.

Take a bow, Keni. As good a post as we've seen on here in an age. It takes a lot more than one or even two good performances to convince that a midfield is going to carry all before them. That's coming from someone who has spoken highly of Lucas for a long time and been defending Henderson and Allen since they arrived.

There were a massive number of fans on KT who said we no longer needed Finnan after Josemi's first performance. How fortunate that nobody took them too seriously. This midfield trio worked wonderfully against Spurs but I'd expect them to struggle against City and perform strongly against the Chavs. None of that is evidence that Gerrard is no longer needed.

RedNinja is trippin' on that shite his smokin'

Gerrard has plenty to offer. its great that the other players are finally stepping up. Thats what having a strong squad is all about. May it long continue.

Yes, failing to worship a player unreservedly, I can see why you'd leap to that conclusion.

Not really. You do often get very emotional on the internet, but usually it's not to attack Liverpool players with comments like:
His strolling puffed up ball of self-regard has been a footballing black hole all season...
He gets by with a couple of good passes per match...
He walks around like a pensioner in the park...

Those words have nothing to do with worshipping or not worshipping a player unreservedly.
It's similar to the bollocks Ryan came out with about Dalglish that you detested.

Anyway, ignore this post if you're going to get all defensive and emotional again.

??😵

What have I missed. There was nothing wrong with that post and you know it Macca.

As you were if this is some kind of internal dispute but, otherwise, it's like someone has hijacked your laptop. An emotionally dyslexic hijacker.

What on earth are you talking about? It was a gratuitous post designed, as they always are - he does the same 'emotional' routine over and over again, which, if you've got enough honesty to stand back and think about it, is more than a bit ironic - to start an argument, and, as usual, it's about two days late to pretend to be anything else. What the heck you're doing getting involved is a mystery.

I really can't be arsed with this. It's a decent thread, this dispute is spoiling it.

I'd like both juniormember & gkmacca to put it to one side & comment only on this thread topic alone please.

I'd also ask anyone else to refrain from commenting on this dispute.

Cheers guys X

It's easy to see how ill-feeling can be generated on this subject, because it's so mysterious. We all know that Gerrard is a wonderful player, but it's pretty obvious to me that when he isn't in the team, we play better. This has been the case for a few seasons now.

Yeah, I agree with that.

I think the situation is compounded by the fact we've never played without him for a long enough constant period to get a definitive judgement, & that he does still have that remarkable ability to do something at the most crucial moments in big games, which is something so few players can offer.

But is it so mysterious, Portly? No player is bigger than the club, but Gerrard became bigger than the team. That was down to his brilliance. But once the body starts to fail then something needs to change. I desperately wanted to believe him when he came back from his groin operation saying he felt fitter than he'd been in years, but gradually it got harder and harder to keep believing. As I've said, when someone has that talent and intelligence, there's always a potential role for him, but it has to be well-defined and integrated into the team shape as a whole. If Rodgers really works with him on playing a very specific role, tailored to his current stamina and strengths, then he can be the wise old head of the team and a great element within it for at least a couple more years. It's the 'Captain Marvel' stuff we need to lose. You can't be 'Captain Marvel-ish', There's just not the energy any more.

That sums up the issue nicely, & perhaps in doing so highlights what could be a fatal or at least major flaw for Rodgers.

In his understandable need to get the fans onside one of the main factors was to become a massive eulogist for Gerrard & to seemingly promise him the earth to do so.

It seems from the outside that it's meant he has to play Gerrard, & not just that, but play him in that pivotal role in the centre, which has pushed out Allen, reduced Henderson's influence on the match & hamstrung Lucas by having him share defensive duties for most of a match then have him cover more ground when stevie tires (I'd be interested to see how many yellow cards Lucas gets in a match time line, as I feel they're often late on when he's covering more ground).

An ideal would be to somehow mimic the setup molby had, as Gerrard does have that range of passing, & despite not having a massive arse to keep the opposition at bay, is strong enough & commands enough fear/respect to be able to put his foot on the ball.

Either that or a Gary macallister role is what he needs in order to justify a regular place if the rest of the midfield performs to a good standard with the energy they showed at the weekend.

I couldn't help but think during today's performance that it could be the worst news for Steven. Granted we didn't get his delivery on set pieces or the intangibles he brings to the side...influencing the ref...etc. but our midfield was the best it has been this season. Running, winning back the ball, influencing play, running, and more running. Allen and Lego Head were brilliant. Lucas looked so comfortable just in front of the four.

My oh my...very intredasting.

Don't judge his absence on 1 game

Perhaps it would help if they took the captaincy off Gerrard. Sure, many fans would say that was unfair, but I thought it was pretty unfair when they took it off Sami Hyypia, who had never put a foot wrong. I don't think Gerrard has been an ideal captain. He just tends to carp at the others, particularly when he is having an off-day himself. Carra was much better at it when he deputised.

If Suarez stays I think it'll go to him for a season until he does go.

If Suarez goes I wouldn't be surprised to see Henderson get it.

He walks on the pitch for the England under 21s like he owns the place, & plays like it too, if he can get that confidence from the armband in the league he'll be a massive influence.
