We don't need him. .

I await to be proven wrong but I expect the opposite. I think we'd be a good show against the Chelsea midfield but will struggle with the power and pace of City.

I think Gerrard would be a big advantage against City.

Aye cos Gerrard has loads of pace and power nowadays.

Everyone thought, including myself, that Spurs midfield would overpower us. It never happened, we ran rings around them.

Not saying it'll be the same against City because they're a top class side but there's hope.

Yeah, I'm sure most opposition players fear the power and pace of Lucas and Allen ahead of Gerrard.

Yeah Gary but you do get that running rings around a City midfield will almost certainly be a bit harder don't you? I hope so, cos it's pretty obvious.

The pace and power of the Spurs midfield was meant to batter us, if I remember correctly we destroyed them. I am not saying the same thing will happen, but just because they have pace and power doesn't mean we will get destroyed we can play around them, tire them out by moving the ball. Also they are without Aguero as well - big loss..

As for Stevie, I actually think his set piece delivery will be a big loss in this game as it has been very good this year. I also think his long range passing will be a loss for the counter at the Etihad.

Of course I do mate! That said, Spurs were going to batter us in that department if you believed what everyone said pre-game and it never happened.

And I was more making the point that Gerrard will make little difference if it's "pace and power" you're after.

I just find that an extraordinary assertion. I've been as big a believer in Lucas as anyone in this forum and defended Allen as well. But to suggest that either of them possess the pace or power of even a waning Gerrard is absurd. They don't and no bucket load of statistics will alter this fact.

They will both cover more ground than the captain but will never have the same physical presence. Neither carries the same threat which I believe would be of great importance in giving Suarez a little more room.

Don't you know ? We played 2 games without him and it's enough proof that we don't need him against a City midfield that's the most powerful in the prem league. Completely different to a incoherent spurs midfield. Anyway, according to another Suarez thread, we should also hand off the captains arm band off Gerrard to him.

I think the point about Spurs midfield is valid. Spurs were dominating games all season with their midfield, but were shit infront of goal. It's only in the last few weeks we've got the balance right without Gerrard in there. That's not a slight on Gerrard, but we've been the sum of our parts more, certainly more cohesive and industrious as a unit. Gerrard does disrupt that by being too pedestrian off the ball, wandering too much and generally ball watching. He's been unshackled for years and years, allowed to roam and play his own game, so it's little surprise really. We all know Gerrard is the more infinitely talented footballer and he still has a major part to play, we saw that last season at City, his setpieces too are invaluable, it's a healthy conundrum.

Personally, as I've said for most of the season, I think he should be pushed upfield, given license to do what he does best, while leaving the triangle of Lucas/Allen/Hendo to do their thing. A front three from Suarez, Sturridge, Gerrard, Coutinho and Sterling is quality.

Have to agree, would love to see Gerrard on the right of a front three.

Lucas and Allen are not better than Gerrard, far from it. A 40 years old Gerrard will still be by miles better than them. Period.

Gerrard brings us experience, bursts of domination & unpredictability.

Lucas & Allen bring us energy, pressing & more consistent pace.

Against most teams the latter qualities will win out. Against the best it may be more preferable to have that experience, the confidence it brings & his name, which opposition players respect, maybe too much at times.

We'll see which it is today.
