Virgiling on the vandijkulous

Its important for us to signal to other mid tier players that we'll pay over the odds for them ?

I'd say we've just made all future transfer negotiations impossible.

I can't say I agree with that, but we shouldn't be offering him more than Coutinho, it's a ridiculous wage.

Nobody knows yet, obviously, that van Dijk will be a great signing for us, if he signs.
But its a bit funny that we hang FSG out to dry for being tight, and that they wont spend any money.
And now that we might break our transfer record twice in a few days, its changed to "why are we spending so much money".

I'm made up.

Meanwhile, recent CB signings:
Samuel Umtiti - £24.6 million
Eric Bailly - £30 million (after 1 season of regular football in La Liga)
Mats Hummels - £30.7 million (had a yr left on his Dortmund contract)
David Luiz - £34 million + add ons (PSG paid £50 million for him in 2015)
Shkodran Mustafi - £35 million
John Stones - £47.5 million + add ons

If he does cost £60 million inclusive of add ons, then the fee isn't that ridiculous as it may seem I guess.

Then there's the 'mitigating' factors of Sakho's probable sale and Matip's 'free transfer'.

We come back to non-linear transfer fee progression, 10% better = 25% increase in price, 25% better = double the fee. In the case of VVD it's a case of knowing what we've got, hence the fee. If he had been going to (or indeed still does go to) City or Chelsea we wouldn't be moaning about the figure - just acknowledge that he is more than likely going to improve their defences. So I'm glad he's signing for us.

Still more than I'm happy paying, but that's better. £40million would have been my absolute ceiling for him.

Agreed. Will be interesting to see what the fee is when its official though.
Its to soon to be crying about 60 + mill at least.

Matip's probable sale? Really?

It's a lot of money and we're clearly overspending here. I just hope he turns out to be brilliant for a long time for us. He has to be for that price.

I tend to think we're going to spend a shit load this summer. No wonder Klopp was buzzing the other day. I think the owners know they are fortunate to have Klopp and want to ensure he gets his top targets. But this should put an end to all the bullshit of Klopp being the best man to build on a budget. He's prioritising guaranteed quality over any sense of value for money here. Spurs CBs cost fuck all and they're quality. It's impossible to believe there isn't much better value elsewhere in the market.

Listing out that series of transfers should show you what a massive overpay it is.

I think i joked recently that giving Lovren 100k would mean Van Dijk's agent would look for 200k.

One bad decision begets another

Nobody is arsed about spending money. It's natural when there is a bit of unease about spending huge amounts on players that some don't think is worth it. We can't spunk £200m and hope it works out because we can spend another £200m next year - we haven't got that sort of money.

So we all knew that FSG were going to give Klopp plenty of funds this summer, but I don't think many would have spent nearly £100m on Salah and Dick Van Dyke as first choice.

In fact, fucking nobody would. So that explains the reaction.

I know more than a few had wrries about £30m on Mane, but that's not really the same, and in any case, I wasn't one of them. Obviously.

Ridiculous price aside this is an awesome player.

Whatever silly money we get for Sakho should be destracted from Virgil's fee mind and soften the blow somewhat.

Anyways, every time Ive seen him play bar one game he's looked EXACTLY what we need.

This is major news!!

*Dont let no forum troll tell you otherwise..

I'm more on Ross' side of the fence.

The injury is a big concern as is the fee and I can't quite get on board with the notion that a defender from Southampton represents a statement signing.

That is the pond we're fishing in though.

The statement here, is that we have actually landed a very attractive player in front of our competitors noses so never mind the club he was representing.

It's pretty gloomy on Ross's side of the fence. Over here The Lying Rag is shining, the bbq is sizzling away, the beers are cold, and the craic is excellent. Oh, those babes are deciding they want to play volleyball! Meanwhile, over at Rosco's:

I really dont care about the money.
This will make him the 6th most expensive player ever if the 60m runoured fee is true.

Thats utterly mental for a decent centre back with a season ending injury.
